| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker must hold Checkmk administrator privileges sufficient to create or modify active or custom check configurations - confirmed by the CVSS PR:H metric. The victim must be a separate user, either another administrator or any account with host read permissions, who navigates to the service discovery page for the relevant host and triggers or views the affected check output - confirmed by the CVSS UI:P metric. The XSS payload fires only within the service discovery view, not across other Checkmk pages. Exploitation is bounded by the high privilege bar required for the attacker, the requirement for a distinct victim to interact with the page, and the narrow injection surface limited to active and custom check output fields. The effectiveness of session-theft impact further depends on whether Checkmk session cookies are marked HttpOnly, which may prevent direct JavaScript access to cookie values. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 score of 4.8 (Medium) reflects a balanced picture: the network attack vector (AV:N) and low complexity (AC:L) are offset substantially by the high privilege requirement (PR:H) and the need for victim interaction (UI:P). In practice the attacker must already hold Checkmk administrator rights sufficient to configure active or custom checks - a significant pre-condition that sharply limits the realistic attacker population to insiders or accounts that have already been compromised. Impact is constrained to low integrity effects on the vulnerable and subsequent systems (VI:L, SI:L) with no confidentiality or availability impact confirmed by the CVSS vector (VC:N, VA:N, SC:N, SA:N). No EPSS data was provided in the intelligence feed; exploitation probability is therefore inferred from CVSS signals alone. The vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public proof-of-concept has been identified at time of analysis. Real-world risk is most relevant in scenarios involving malicious or compromised administrators attempting to escalate impact against other privileged users within the same Checkmk instance, rather than as an external entry point. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A malicious or compromised Checkmk administrator configures an active or custom check whose output contains a JavaScript payload - for example, a script that exfiltrates session cookies or performs privileged actions through the Checkmk web interface. When another administrator or a user with host read permissions later opens the service discovery page for the affected host and runs or views the check, the stored script executes silently in their browser within the Checkmk application context, potentially enabling session hijacking or unauthorized configuration changes. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Jun 08, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in Checkmk's service discovery active check output allows a high-privileged administrator to inject persistent malicious HTML or JavaScript that executes in the browsers of other administrators or users with host read permissions when they run checks on the service discovery page. Affected versions span all currently maintained branches: Checkmk below 2.5.0p5, below 2.4.0p31, below 2.3.0p48, and all 2.2.0 releases with no patch for that branch. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis and the vulnerability is absent from CISA KEV, but the stored nature of the XSS and its targeting of privileged user sessions make it a meaningful lateral-privilege and session-compromise vector within Checkmk deployments.
RemediationAI
The primary fix is to upgrade to a vendor-released patched version: Checkmk 2.5.0p5, 2.4.0p31, or 2.3.0p48, as documented in the vendor advisory at https://checkmk.com/werk/17993. The 2.2.0 branch has no patch available; operators on that branch should plan an urgent upgrade to a supported and patched release. As a compensating control while patches are staged, access to active and custom check configuration should be restricted to the absolute minimum set of fully trusted administrators, reducing the attacker pool that can plant a payload. Auditing existing active and custom check configurations for unexpected HTML or JavaScript content in check output fields can help detect any prior injection attempts. No workaround is known that fully neutralizes the stored XSS without applying the vendor patch.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Checkmk is an enterprise IT monitoring platform (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:checkmk_gmbh:checkmk:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) that supports both built-in and administrator-defined active and custom checks whose output is rendered in the web-based service discovery interface. The root cause is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation - Stored XSS): check output returned by active checks is persisted and later rendered in the service discovery page without sufficient sanitization. Because check output is stored server-side and replayed into the browser on demand, any administrator with check configuration rights can embed JavaScript or HTML that executes in the security context of any subsequent user who views that check output on the service discovery page.

Stored cross-site scripting in the service discovery active check output in Checkmk <2.5.0p5, <2.4.0p31, <2.3.0p48, and all 2.2.0 versions allows an administrator who can configure active or custom checks to inject malicious HTML or JavaScript into check output that executes in the browser of an admin or a user with host read permissions when they run the check on the service discovery page.
