Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated store customer account (JWT) - PR:L, not unauthenticated. Exploitation further requires that the target store allows checkout without login (guest checkout enabled) AND that an eligible guest cart containing billing/shipping address data exists. The vulnerable endpoint is PATCH /api/v3/store/carts/:id/associate in Spree::Api::V3::Store::CartsController#associate, which located carts by prefixed_id without requiring the cart's x-spree-token or any proof of possession; because prefixed cart IDs are reversible/derivable, an attacker can enumerate valid guest cart IDs. Limiting factors: only affects Spree 5.4.0 through 5.4.4 and 5.5.4, stores that mandate login for checkout are not exploitable, and the fix now mandates the matching cart token even for the caller's own cart.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority authorization flaw (IDOR / CWE-639), not an overinflated high-CVSS issue. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N, 7.1) is well-supported by the description and the PR diff: exploitation is network-based and low-complexity, but it requires PR:L - an authenticated store customer account - so it is not remote-unauthenticated. The C:H rating is justified because the attacker exfiltrates a victim's billing and shipping address PII; I:L reflects that reassigning the cart can disrupt the guest's in-progress checkout but does not broadly modify data; A:N is correct. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code were provided, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation - the real-world urgency is driven by the ease of the technique (reversible prefixed cart IDs are enumerable/derivable) rather than by observed attacks. The single significant gating condition (store must allow guest checkout without login AND a guest cart with address data must exist) meaningfully narrows the exploitable population. Net: patch on a normal cadence; it is a real PII-disclosure bug but shows no signals of widespread or active exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker registers a normal customer account on a Spree store that permits guest checkout, then derives the reversible prefixed_id of an eligible guest cart and sends PATCH /api/v3/store/carts/:id/associate with only their JWT - no cart token. The endpoint reassigns the guest cart to the attacker's account and returns the victim's billing and shipping addresses, while also disrupting the guest's in-progress cart. No public exploit code was identified, but the fix diff and reversible-ID design make the technique straightforward to reproduce.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026

Authenticated store customers can seize other shoppers' guest carts in Spree Commerce by calling PATCH /api/v3/store/carts/:id/associate with a derivable, reversible prefixed cart ID, gaining access to the cart's billing and shipping address data and disrupting the guest's in-progress checkout. The flaw affects the 5.4.x line from 5.4.0 and the 5.5.x line up to but not including the fixed releases 5.4.4 and 5.5.4, and only manifests on stores that permit guest checkout and where an eligible guest cart containing address data exists. Rated CVSS 3.1 7.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:N), this is a genuine but moderate IDOR-style authorization weakness rather than an unauthenticated takeover; no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Spree 5.4.4 (5.4.x line) or 5.5.4 (5.5.x line), which require a matching x-spree-token cart credential on PATCH /api/v3/store/carts/:id/associate even when the cart is already the caller's own - see the advisory at https://github.com/spree/spree/security/advisories/GHSA-4825-p4xm-pcf2 and the fix in PR https://github.com/spree/spree/pull/14314 (commits 8834230a1f47bb5988f23f45dbd162776cf592bd and af0d1a2d582a60d179de65b7d3ea024cb26426a8); upstream fix available (PR/commit) and released patched versions independently confirmed as 5.4.4 and 5.5.4. If upgrading is not immediately possible, the most targeted compensating control is to backport the token check into CartsController#associate, requiring x-spree-token to equal the target cart's token and returning 403 (access_denied) otherwise - the trade-off is that legitimate clients must be updated to send the cart token when claiming a cart. As a coarser interim measure, configure the store to require login for checkout (disabling guest checkout), which eliminates the eligible guest carts this attack depends on at the cost of reduced conversion and a changed shopper experience. Blocking or restricting PATCH /api/v3/store/carts/:id/associate at the reverse proxy or WAF also closes the vector, but it breaks the legitimate cart-association flow for logged-in customers, so treat it as a stopgap. Finally, consider rotating or invalidating prefixed cart identifiers and monitoring for anomalous 403s or sequences of cart-association calls that would indicate prefixed ID enumeration; note that because prefixed IDs are derivable by design, rate limiting alone is only a partial mitigation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Spree is an open-source e-commerce platform built on Ruby on Rails, and this issue lives in its v3 Store API (Spree::Api::V3::Store::CartsController#associate) exposed over HTTP as PATCH /api/v3/store/carts/:id/associate. The root cause is CWE-639, Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key: the controller's find_cart_for_association helper resolved a cart purely by its prefixed_id without requiring the cart's own secret token, so the only credential the endpoint checked was the caller's JWT. Because Spree prefixed cart IDs are reversible/derivable rather than high-entropy secrets, an authenticated customer could enumerate valid guest cart identifiers and bind a victim's guest cart to their own account, after which the API returned the cart's stored billing and shipping addresses. The upstream fix introduces a possession check: the caller must now present the cart's x-spree-token header (Spree's cart credential, distinct from user ownership) and it must match @cart.token, enforced via authorize! and a new require_cart_token! guard that raises CanCan::AccessDenied (HTTP 403, access_denied) on missing or mismatched tokens - applied even when the cart already belongs to the caller. The accompanying spec changes confirm this token requirement is the intended boundary, and the OpenAPI store.yaml documentation was updated to mark x-spree-token as a required header.

DescriptionCVE.org

Spree is an open source e-commerce solution built with Ruby on Rails. From 5.4.0 until 5.4.4 and 5.5.4, PATCH /api/v3/store/carts/:id/associate in Spree::Api::V3::Store::CartsController#associate uses find_cart_for_association to locate a cart by prefixed_id but does not require a cart token or otherwise verify possession of the selected guest cart. An authenticated customer can derive reversible prefixed cart IDs, associate an eligible guest cart with the attacker's account, and receive billing and shipping address data from the cart. Exploitation requires a guest cart with address data on a store that does not require login for checkout, and reassignment can also disrupt the guest's in-progress cart. This issue is fixed in versions 5.4.4 and 5.5.4.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Spree Commerce, a widely used e-commerce platform, contains an authorization flaw that allows authenticated customers to access and disrupt other shoppers' guest cart data, including billing and shipping addresses. This vulnerability affects versions 5.4.x and 5.5.x, potentially exposing personally identifiable information and undermining customer trust for retailers that enable guest checkout. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, but the high confidentiality impact warrants immediate mitigation.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Disable guest checkout, restrict access to the /api/v3/store/carts/:id/associate endpoint, implement WAF rules to block anomalous PATCH requests, monitor logs for suspicious cart association activity, and consider rate limiting or additional authentication for cart operations.
