1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated MISP account that is NOT a site administrator (perm_site_admin) and that already has legitimate view access to an event containing more restricted attributes/objects. The flaw is triggered through the object-reference add functionality, where the server only validated event-level access and failed to re-check each attribute's/object's distribution level and sharing-group membership. LIMITING FACTORS: valid credentials are needed (PR:L), the target event must contain data restricted to a sharing group or higher distribution level than the attacker, and the deployment must actually use sharing groups/distribution restrictions for segregation - instances with uniformly-distributed data have nothing extra to disclose. No user interaction and no admin rights are required beyond that.

Impact

This is a genuine but bounded authorization/information-disclosure flaw, not a high-severity emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) requires an authenticated non-site-admin user who already has legitimate access to an event, which meaningfully limits the attacker population to existing MISP users. The vector reports VC:N but SC:H - the vendor models the disclosure of restricted data belonging to other sharing groups/distribution levels as a subsequent-system confidentiality impact rather than a direct one; a straight CVSS 3.1 reading would express this simply as C:L. There is NO integrity or availability impact (VI/VA and SI/SA all N), so this is strictly a read/disclosure issue. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided - combined with PR:L, this points to low real-world exploitation urgency and a targeted-insider risk profile rather than mass exploitation. The patch (commit f36634e57) is confirmed available and directly corroborates the root cause. Bottom line: prioritize for environments that rely on MISP sharing-group segregation to protect sensitive attributes, but this is not a drop-everything internet-facing RCE.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated MISP user (analyst-level, not site admin) who has view access to a shared event uses the object-reference 'add' workflow to enumerate attributes and objects within that event. Because the reference-picker query only checked event-level access and not each item's distribution/sharing-group restriction, the attacker sees restricted attribute values, object details, and related-object data intended only for a narrower sharing group. No public exploit code was identified; exploitation is manual against the object-reference add endpoint.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026

Missing authorization in MISP allows an authenticated user who is not a site administrator - but who already holds legitimate view access to an event - to enumerate attributes, object details and related object data inside that event that are restricted to other sharing groups or higher distribution levels, by abusing the object-reference 'add' workflow that validated only event-level access. The assessed impact is confidentiality-only (CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N; the vendor-published CVSS 4.0 vector scores 6.3), with no integrity or availability effect, and it is bounded by preconditions: valid credentials are required, the target event must actually mix data at different distribution levels, and deployments that do not use sharing groups or distribution segregation have nothing additional to expose. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, no confirmed active exploitation, and a fix is available per the vendor advisory via upstream commit f36634e57.

RemediationAI

Apply the upstream fix in commit f36634e57 (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/f36634e57) - patch status is 'available per vendor advisory', and because the reference is an upstream commit rather than a tagged release, confirm that the MISP version you deploy includes it (or pin the commit) and re-test the object-reference add flow afterwards; a specific released version number incorporating the fix is not independently confirmed from the available data, so verify against MISP release notes before relying on a version-only upgrade. If the fix cannot be deployed immediately, the most effective compensating control is to restrict who may create object references at all: via role/ACL configuration, remove the object-reference creation capability from non-site-admin roles, accepting the significant trade-off that analysts lose a normal correlation workflow and must escalate reference creation to administrators. A second, lower-friction control is data segregation: keep attributes at materially different distribution levels in separate events rather than mixing them in one broadly viewable event, which removes the precondition entirely - the cost is a more fragmented event structure and heavier use of sharing groups. Because exploitation is read-only, there is no corruption to clean up, but any data already exposed through this weakness cannot be un-disclosed; organisations with evidence of misuse should treat the affected indicator values as potentially disclosed to unintended parties and, where operationally feasible, rotate or refresh the sensitive indicators. Finally, note the limitation explicitly: instances that do not use sharing groups or distribution restrictions gain nothing from these mitigations because they have no restricted data to leak in the first place.

Technical ContextAI · show details

MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) is a CakePHP-based open-source threat-intelligence sharing platform in which every event, attribute and object carries a distribution level - organisation-only, community, connected communities, all communities, sharing group, or inherited from the event - with sharing-group-restricted items (distribution 4) keyed to a sharing_group_id that only members of that group are authorised to see. The flaw is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization), rooted in the ObjectReferencesController::add() endpoint: before returning the list of attributes and objects that a user may reference, the controller checked only that the user could access the enclosing event and never re-applied per-attribute and per-object distribution and sharing-group checks to the result set. The vendor fix (commit f36634e57) adds a permission branch for non-site-admin users that resolves the caller's authorised sharing-group IDs through SharingGroup::authorizedIds() and then constrains every lookup with an OR clause permitting only records on the user's own event, records with distribution 1/2/3/5, or records with distribution 4 whose sharing_group_id is in the caller's authorised set. In other words, the vulnerable code leaked the existence and content of more-restricted sibling data through an endpoint the user was legitimately allowed to call, rather than through a direct bypass of event ACLs. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* carries wildcard version fields, so the published intelligence does not bound the issue to a specific release range.

DescriptionCVE.org

When a regular user adds a reference between objects or attributes, MISP checks whether the user can access the overall event, but it does not always check whether the individual pieces of data are also allowed for that user.

Because of this, someone who can view an event could potentially access attributes or objects inside that event that were meant to be restricted to a specific sharing group or distribution level.

The vulnerability affects authenticated users who are not site administrators and who already have access to an event containing more restricted data.

The main impact is that users may be able to view sensitive attribute values, object details, or related object data that they should not normally be allowed to see.
