MITRE ATT&CK

| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires: (1) an authenticated MISP account or a data-sharing peer able to influence values rendered by the ContextualMenu JavaScript class (the option text drawn from value.text or value); (2) a victim who is an authenticated MISP user and who opens the contextual menu that renders the attacker-controlled data (UI:P / user interaction). This is a DOM-based XSS in app/webroot/js/contextual_menu.js confined to the MISP application origin. Limiting factors: attacker needs at least low-privilege authenticated access (PR:L), the payload only fires when a victim actively opens the affected menu, and impact is bounded to the browser session rather than direct server compromise. Fixed in MISP 2.5.47. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P) describes a network-reachable DOM-based XSS requiring an authenticated (PR:L) MISP user and passive victim interaction (UI:P). The vendor scores it 6.3 (medium) by placing all impact in the subsequent-system metrics (SC:H/SI:H) rather than the vulnerable system (VC:N/VI:N/VA:N) - a defensible XSS framing where the executing browser/session is treated as a separate impacted system. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code are present in the input, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - a real but not urgent priority. The key gating factors keep real-world risk moderate: an attacker must first influence data that gets rendered into a contextual menu, and a victim analyst must view that menu. Because MISP is a shared threat-intelligence platform where multiple organizations feed data, the 'attacker-influenced data' condition is realistic (stored/second-order XSS via shared events/attributes), which raises practical concern above a pure self-XSS. The source-code diff (innerHTML → textContent) confirms the root cause exactly as described, giving high confidence in the vulnerability's authenticity. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated MISP user (or a peer instance sharing data) supplies a malicious string containing HTML/JavaScript in a field that later populates a contextual-menu <option> via innerHTML. When another authenticated analyst opens that contextual menu in the MISP UI, the injected script executes in the MISP origin, enabling session hijacking, data exfiltration, or actions on the victim's behalf. No public exploit code is identified, but the fix commit precisely confirms the vulnerable innerHTML assignment. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026
DOM-based cross-site scripting in the ContextualMenu JavaScript component of MISP (Malware Information Sharing Platform) allows an attacker who can influence the data rendered in the contextual menu - an authenticated low-privilege MISP user or a data-sharing peer feeding values into the UI - to execute script in a victim user's browser within the MISP application origin. The vulnerable code assigns untrusted option text to innerHTML in app/webroot/js/contextual_menu.js, so any string echoed into the menu is parsed as live markup; exploitation requires a victim to actively open the affected contextual menu (PR:L, UI:P) and the resulting impact is bounded to the victim's browser session, enabling session hijacking, data exfiltration, or actions on behalf of the authenticated user. The issue affects MISP versions below 2.5.47 and is fixed by the vendor in 2.5.47 (commit b062698f2); no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, with EPSS-style risk driven primarily by the broad MISP deployment base rather than demonstrated active exploitation.
RemediationAI
Upgrade MISP to version 2.5.47 or later, which is the vendor-released patched version containing commit b062698f2 (https://github.com/MISP/MISP/commit/b062698f2) that replaces the innerHTML assignments with textContent in app/webroot/js/contextual_menu.js; confirm the updated JavaScript is actually served by clearing browser and reverse-proxy caches, since cached JS bundles can leave users running the vulnerable code after the server has been patched. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls with explicit trade-offs include: deploying a Content-Security-Policy on the MISP origin that forbids inline and eval-based script (script-src 'self' with no unsafe-inline) to block payload execution, at the cost of breaking any legitimate inline handlers or third-party widgets; restricting which accounts and sharing peers can create or synchronise events whose attribute values reach the contextual menu, which reduces attacker reach but constrains normal federation workflows; and hosting MISP behind an authenticating reverse proxy with short session lifetimes and HttpOnly/SameSite cookies to blunt session-hijacking impact, though this does not remove the XSS primitive and may inconvenience legitimate UI behaviour. Because exploitation requires an authenticated MISP account and a victim opening the affected menu, tighten account provisioning and rotate credentials of any user who interacted with untrusted event data prior to patching. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the CVE is not in CISA KEV, so prioritise patching based on exposure of internet-facing or multi-tenant MISP instances rather than emergency response.

Technical ContextAI · show details
This is a CWE-79 improper neutralization of input during web page generation, specifically the DOM-based XSS sub-class. Unlike reflected or stored XSS, the taint never traverses the server: the flaw lives entirely in client-side JavaScript. The ContextualMenu class in app/webroot/js/contextual_menu.js builds dropdown entries and previously wrote values using option.innerHTML = value.text (and option.innerHTML = value), which instructs the browser's HTML parser to interpret the string as markup and construct corresponding DOM nodes, including <img onerror>, <svg onload>, or other event-bearing elements. Any attacker-controllable string reaching that sink - option text sourced from the contextual menu data model, which can be influenced by data supplied through MISP's sharing/API surface - therefore executes as script in the MISP application origin, inheriting the victim's session context. The vendor fix (commit b062698f2) is a canonical sink substitution, replacing innerHTML with textContent, which forces the browser to treat the supplied value as an inert text node and eliminates the HTML parsing step; this preserves the visual rendering of menu labels while removing the injection primitive. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and is broadly deployed in threat-intelligence and CERT/CSIRT environments, where the application origin typically holds sensitive indicator data.

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP contains a DOM-based cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the contextual menu JavaScript component. The ContextualMenu class populates HTML <option> elements by assigning user-controllable values to the innerHTML property. Because innerHTML parses and renders HTML markup, any untrusted string supplied as the option text (value.text or value) is interpreted as live DOM content rather than plain text. An attacker who can influence the data rendered in the contextual menu can inject arbitrary HTML or JavaScript that executes in the victim's browser within the MISP application origin. This may allow session hijacking, data exfiltration, or unauthorized actions performed on behalf of the authenticated user.
