Untrusted guest code (PR:N per vm2 threat model) crosses the sandbox boundary into the host process (S:C); only FIPS-mode toggling yields limited integrity/availability impact (I:L/A:L) and no confidentiality loss.

2DescriptionCVE.org
vm2 through 3.12.0 exposes Node.js's crypto.setFips() function to untrusted guest code when an embedder explicitly allowlists the crypto builtin for a NodeVM (require.builtin: ['crypto']). The builtin sanitizer (sanitizeCryptoModule in lib/builtin.js) replaces crypto.setEngine but leaves crypto.setFips callable, and the readonly wrapper used to expose the host module does not localize side effects of forwarded host functions. Guest code can therefore call crypto.setFips() to change the FIPS mode of the entire host process; the modified mode is subsequently observed by trusted host code (crypto.getFips() changed from 0 to 1 in the reported test), crossing the NodeVM isolation boundary. Fixed in vm2 3.12.1.
AnalysisAI
Sandbox escape in vm2 through 3.12.0 lets untrusted guest code cross the NodeVM isolation boundary and change process-wide state by calling crypto.setFips(), which toggles the FIPS mode of the entire host Node.js process (observed as crypto.getFips() flipping from 0 to 1 in the reporter's test). The vulnerability is only reachable when the embedding application runs vm2 as a NodeVM with the non-default, opt-in configuration require.builtin: ['crypto']; authentication and user interaction are not required in that scenario, and the practical impact is limited to low-integrity and low-availability effects rather than arbitrary host code execution or data disclosure. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires the embedding application to run vm2 (through 3.12.0) as a NodeVM AND to have explicitly allowlisted the Node.js crypto builtin via require.builtin: ['crypto'] - this is a non-default, opt-in configuration. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a moderate-severity sandbox-escape/isolation-boundary crossing in vm2, a Node.js code-sandboxing library. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: vm2 3.12.1 - upgrade from any version through 3.12.0 to 3.12.1 and re-run your guest-code regression tests, since the fix necessarily changes how the crypto builtin is exposed. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
