| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that Znuny be configured to use the HTTPBasicAuth backend (Kernel::System::Auth::HTTPBasicAuth for agents and/or Kernel::System::CustomerAuth::HTTPBasicAuth for customers) as the authentication module - this is the AT:P attack requirement and is NOT the default configuration. It additionally requires that the fronting web server does not strip or sanitize an inbound 'Remote-User' request header, so that it reaches the Perl process as $ENV{HTTP_REMOTE_USER}. When those conditions hold, exploitation is remote, unauthenticated, and needs no user interaction: the attacker simply supplies a Remote-User header naming any existing account. The decisive limiting factor is the non-default HTTPBasicAuth backend; installations using the default DB or LDAP authentication backends are not affected. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority vulnerability, not an inflated CVSS score. CWE-348 (Use of Less Trusted Source) combined with the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, VC:H/VI:H) describes a trivial, remote, unauthenticated, credential-less authentication bypass yielding administrator impersonation - the worst-case outcome for a helpdesk/ticketing platform holding confidential customer data. The single mitigating signal is AT:P (Attack Requirements: Present), which correctly reflects that exploitation is possible ONLY when the HTTPBasicAuth backend (Kernel::System::Auth::HTTPBasicAuth / CustomerAuth::HTTPBasicAuth) is the configured authentication module - a non-default, environment-specific deployment choice. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so exploitation-probability and in-the-wild signals are UNKNOWN rather than low; absence of these data points should not be read as low risk given how simple the forged-header technique is. Signals are internally consistent (network vector matches an HTTP-header-based attack; PR:N matches 'without providing any credentials'), so there is no contradiction to flag - the only material caveat is that real-world exposure is gated entirely by whether HTTPBasicAuth is in use. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker reaches the Znuny agent or customer web interface over the network and sends a normal HTTP request with a forged 'Remote-User: admin' header. Because the HTTPBasicAuth module falls back to the attacker-controllable $ENV{HTTP_REMOTE_USER} when the web-server-set REMOTE_USER is absent, the application logs them in as that user with no password, granting full administrative access to tickets, confidential data, and system configuration. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the technique requires only a single crafted header and no tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
Authentication bypass in Znuny through 7.3.6 allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to impersonate any existing account - including administrators - by sending a forged 'Remote-User' HTTP header, granting full access to confidential ticket data and system controls without any password. The flaw only manifests when the HTTPBasicAuth authentication backend (Kernel::System::Auth::HTTPBasicAuth for agents and/or Kernel::System::CustomerAuth::HTTPBasicAuth for customers) is configured, which is a non-default deployment choice, and when the fronting web server passes an inbound Remote-User header through to the Perl process unsanitized. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified in the available data, and the CNA's CVSS 9.5 rating is tempered by the genuine configuration prerequisite; installations using the default database or LDAP authentication backends are not affected.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch version is confirmed in the available data, so the first action is to consult Znuny's security advisory ZSA-2026-14 (https://www.znuny.org/en/advisories/zsa-2026-14) and the advisory index (https://www.znuny.org/advisories) and apply the fixed release as soon as Znuny publishes it. Until then, the most effective compensating control is to stop using HTTPBasicAuth as the authentication backend: switch to the default database or LDAP backend in Kernel/Config.pm (the affected modules are Kernel::System::Auth::HTTPBasicAuth and Kernel::System::CustomerAuth::HTTPBasicAuth), accepting the operational cost of re-establishing credentials or directory bindings for users who relied on web-server pre-authentication. If HTTPBasicAuth must remain, harden the fronting web server so that client-supplied Remote-User headers never reach the Perl process - for Apache, use 'RequestHeader unset Remote-User' (and validate that REMOTE_USER is only set after real authentication), or for nginx clear the header with 'proxy_set_header Remote-User "";' - with the trade-off that any legitimate proxy or SSO pass-through that depends on Remote-User will break. As an additional containment measure, restrict network access to the agent and customer interfaces to trusted proxy IPs so untrusted clients cannot inject the header at all, and audit existing logs for requests containing a Remote-User header from unexpected sources to detect attempted exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-348 (Use of Less Trusted Source): Znuny's HTTPBasicAuth authentication modules resolve the login name from two environment variables, preferring $ENV{REMOTE_USER} - which the fronting web server sets only after it has itself authenticated the request - but falling back to $ENV{HTTP_REMOTE_USER}, a value derived directly from the client-supplied 'Remote-User' request header. Because the application treats these two sources as equivalent, an attacker who can reach the application through a web server that does not strip or overwrite that header can name any account and be logged in as that user. The affected code paths are Kernel::System::Auth::HTTPBasicAuth (agent interface) and Kernel::System::CustomerAuth::HTTPBasicAuth (customer interface) in Znuny up to and including 7.3.6; the wildcard CPE cpe:2.3:a:znuny:znuny:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that all versions through 7.3.6 are in scope. The vulnerability is protocol-agnostic HTTP header injection into the request environment, so exploitation does not require malformed parsing or memory corruption - only that the HTTPBasicAuth backend be active and the header survive to the application layer. The CNA scored this CVSS 4.0 9.5 with AT:P (attack requires prerequisites), while our independent assessment scored it CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:L, consistent with high confidentiality and integrity impact limited to deployments using the non-default backend.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
In Znuny through 7.3.6, an attacker can bypass specific standard login procedures and gain unauthorized access to sensitive system functions by manipulating a specific HTTP request header. Because the application incorrectly trusts this header, an attacker can impersonate any user, including administrators, without requiring a password. This grants full access to confidential data and system controls. More specifically, the HTTPBasicAuth modules for the agent (Kernel::System::Auth::HTTPBasicAuth) and customer (Kernel::System::CustomerAuth::HTTPBasicAuth) interfaces read the username to log in not only from $ENV{REMOTE_USER} (set by the web server after successful authentication), but also, as a fallback, from $ENV{HTTP_REMOTE_USER}, which is populated directly from an attacker-controllable "Remote-User" request header. On systems where HTTPBasicAuth was configured as the authentication backend, this allowed an attacker to log in as any existing user by sending a request with a forged Remote-User header, without providing any credentials.
Executive ViewAI
Znuny helpdesk deployments up to and including version 7.3.6 are exposed to a critical authentication bypass that allows an attacker to impersonate any account, including administrators, and thereby reach confidential ticket data and system controls without credentials. The exposure is confined to organizations that have enabled the non-default HTTPBasicAuth authentication backend for agents and/or customers and whose fronting web server passes inbound Remote-User headers through unsanitized, so leadership should focus first on identifying which installations actually meet that configuration rather than treating the entire estate as compromised. Where the prerequisite configuration is present, the business risk is substantial: ticketing platforms typically hold sensitive customer, contractual, and incident data, and administrative control could be abused to alter records, exfiltrate data, or pivot deeper into the environment.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable the HTTPBasicAuth authentication backends and use the default database or LDAP backends; where HTTPBasicAuth must be retained, strip or reject inbound Remote-User headers at the fronting web server or reverse proxy and restrict application access to trusted proxy IP addresses only; monitor and alert on forged-header authentication attempts; and rotate credentials and review sessions for administrator accounts until a vendor fix is available.
