2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the MISP Overmind theme to be active and a victim to view the affected statistics views - the event General card (event_general.ctp) or the server/feed preview card (preview_general.ctp) whose donut-chart legend renders object/category names. The attacker must hold authenticated MISP access with permission to create or rename an object (attribute name, event name, or server/feed identifier) that surfaces in the legend (PR:L), and a separate victim must open the affected Overmind page (UI:P). Limiting factors: authentication is required, the non-default Overmind theme must be in use, exploitation depends on victim interaction, and impact scales with the victim's privilege level (an admin viewer yields the greatest impact). No special browser conditions or race conditions are needed. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue. The vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 8.5 is driven by VC:H/VI:H, but the independent signals temper that: EPSS is only 0.33% (26th percentile), CISA SSVC rates Exploitation as 'none', Automatable as 'no', and Technical Impact as only 'partial', and there is no KEV listing. This is a stored XSS (CWE-79) requiring PR:L (an authenticated user with permission to create/rename objects) plus UI:P (a victim must view the Overmind dashboard) - so it is not a mass-exploitable, unauthenticated RCE. The 8.5 rating appears high relative to the SSVC 'partial technical impact' and low EPSS, indicating a high-CVSS-but-moderate-real-risk profile rather than an urgent widespread threat. No public exploit was identified, though the fixing commit (382188d2f) publicly discloses the exact vulnerable innerHTML concatenation, lowering the bar to reproduce. The VC:H/VI:H vendor rating is defensible if the victim is an admin (session hijack enabling account takeover), but for a typical viewer the practical impact is closer to Low - a point worth verifying against your MISP role model. Overall: patch in normal cadence; not an emergency given authentication gating, required user interaction, and absence of active exploitation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged but authenticated MISP user creates or renames an object (attribute, event, or feed/server identifier) whose name embeds a script tag or event-handler attribute. When another user - ideally an administrator - opens the Overmind theme's event General card or server/feed preview card, the donut-chart legend renders the name via innerHTML without HTML-encoding, executing the attacker's JavaScript in the MISP application origin. No public exploit code was identified, but the patch commit reveals the exact injection point, and no special browser conditions or races are required. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv2 – Sep 22, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the MISP Overmind theme allows an authenticated user with permission to create or rename an object, event, or server/feed identifier to inject markup that is later rendered as live HTML in another user's dashboard. When a victim opens the affected event General card or server/feed preview card, the donut-chart legend concatenates the stored name directly into an innerHTML string, executing attacker-supplied script in the MISP application origin and enabling session hijacking, data exfiltration, or actions performed as the victim. Our independent assessment rates this as a genuine but moderate-priority issue: exploitation requires the non-default Overmind theme to be active (PR:L, UI:P), impact scales with the victim's privilege level, and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis (EPSS 0.33%, 26th percentile; SSVC Exploitation: none, Automatable: no, Technical Impact: partial).
Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
Stored cross-site scripting in the optional Overmind theme of MISP allows an authenticated user who can create or rename an object, attribute, event, or server/feed identifier to inject markup that is rendered as live HTML/JavaScript in the browser of any other user who opens the affected Overmind event view or server/feed preview page. The tainted value is concatenated directly into an innerHTML string for donut-chart legend labels in the event_general.ctp and preview_general.ctp templates, so a crafted name (script tag or event-handler attribute) executes in the MISP application origin and can support session hijacking, data exfiltration, or actions performed as the victim. Exploitation requires the low-privileged authenticated attacker plus victim interaction (viewing the page) and the non-default Overmind theme; the vendor has published a fix commit, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: MISP 2.5.47 (the EUVD affected range lists versions <2.5.47), and the upstream fix is the commit https://github.com/MISP/misp/commit/382188d2f, which adds escapeHtml() encoding around the legend label in both event_general.ctp and preview_general.ctp; upgrading to 2.5.47 or later, or cherry-picking that commit onto a maintained branch, is the primary fix. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensate by switching active themes away from Overmind to the default theme, which removes the vulnerable innerHTML legend rendering but disables the Overmind dashboards users may depend on; alternatively, tighten roles so that only trusted users can create or rename attributes, events, objects, and server/feed identifiers whose names surface in legends, accepting that this may disrupt normal analyst workflows. Deploying a restrictive Content-Security-Policy that disallows inline script reduces the chance of payload execution but requires testing because it can break legitimate Overmind UI behavior, and note that MISP administrators should also audit existing objects and event/server names for injected markup left behind before the patch was applied.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MISP is a PHP/CakePHP threat-intelligence platform whose views are authored as .ctp templates under app/View/Themed/. The Overmind theme builds donut-chart legends for the event General card (app/View/Themed/Overmind/Elements/Events/View/event_general.ctp) and the server/feed preview card (app/View/Themed/Overmind/Elements/Servers/View/preview_general.ctp) by concatenating a label variable into an HTML string that is assigned to innerHTML, without HTML-encoding either the title attribute or the text node. This is a classic CWE-79 improper-neutralization-of-input-during-web-page-generation defect in the persistent (stored) variant: the payload is saved with the MISP object/attribute/event/server name, so it is re-rendered for every subsequent viewer rather than reflected from a single request. The upstream fix (commit 382188d2f) wraps the label in escapeHtml() in both the title attribute and the visible span text, confirming the root cause is missing output encoding at the sink rather than insufficient input validation. The affected package is cpe:2.3:a:misp:misp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, and the assessed CVSS:3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N reflects a network-reachable, low-privilege prerequisite attack with scope change and limited confidentiality/integrity impact and no availability impact.

2DescriptionCVE.org
MISP contains a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Overmind theme's statistics views. The event General card (event_general.ctp) and the server/feed preview card (preview_general.ctp) constructed donut chart legend labels by directly concatenating object name or category keys into an innerHTML string without HTML-encoding. Because MISP object names (e.g., attribute names, event names, or server/feed identifiers) are user-controllable by any authenticated user with sufficient permissions to create or modify such objects, an attacker could craft a name containing malicious markup (for example, a script tag or event-handler attribute). When any other user viewed the affected Overmind dashboard, the injected markup would be interpreted as live HTML/JavaScript in the victim's browser, executing in the context of the MISP application origin. This could allow session hijacking, data exfiltration, or arbitrary actions performed on behalf of the victim. The vulnerability requires the attacker to have low-level authenticated access to create or rename an object whose name is rendered in the legend, and the victim to view the Overmind event or server preview page. No special browser conditions or race conditions are required.
Executive ViewAI
MISP, a widely used threat intelligence platform, contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in its optional Overmind theme. An authenticated user with permission to create or rename objects, events, or server/feed identifiers can inject malicious code that executes in other users' browsers when they view affected dashboard cards, potentially leading to session hijacking, data exfiltration, or unauthorized actions performed as the victim. Leadership should care because this could compromise sensitive threat intelligence data and user accounts, though exploitation requires the non-default Overmind theme to be active, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
