Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires local access to the AMD GPU (amdgpu) DRM device and the ability to invoke CRTC/atomic reset paths that call amdgpu_dm_crtc_reset_state(). The dangling pointer only arises when kzalloc() fails during that reset - i.e., under kernel memory exhaustion - so exploitation is gated on inducing an allocation failure at the precise moment, which is not reliably attacker-controllable. Limited to systems using AMD GPUs with the amdgpu display stack; no remote vector, and realistic outcome is a kernel crash rather than code execution or data disclosure. |
| Impact | This is a low-real-world-risk issue despite the vendor's 7.8 CVSS. The vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H claims high confidentiality/integrity/availability impact via local, low-privilege, low-complexity access, but this contradicts the actual defect: a dangling pointer that only manifests when kzalloc() fails inside amdgpu_dm_crtc_reset_state(). Allocation failure is not attacker-controllable in any reliable way (it requires kernel memory exhaustion), so realistic AC is High and the practical impact is a crash/use-after-free rather than a controllable read/write primitive - the vendor's C:H/I:H is not supported by the description. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are provided; the flaw was found internally by the Linux Verification Center via SVACE static analysis, indicating a code-quality/hardening fix rather than an observed attack. Signals conflict: vendor CVSS is high but every corroborating exploitation signal (EPSS/KEV/POC) is absent or negative, consistent with a defensively-patched error path, not a priority threat. The 'Information Disclosure' tag is not supported - there is no disclosure path; the outcome is denial of service. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A local user repeatedly triggers CRTC atomic reset (e.g., modeset/DRM ioctls) while the system is under severe memory pressure so that kzalloc() fails during amdgpu_dm_crtc_reset_state(); the CRTC state pointer is then left dangling at freed memory. A subsequent DRM operation dereferences the freed state, causing a use-after-free that most likely crashes the machine. No public exploit exists and reliable triggering of the allocation failure is impractical. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026
A dangling-pointer condition in the AMD display (amdgpu) driver of the Linux kernel can leave a CRTC state pointer referencing freed memory when amdgpu_dm_crtc_reset_state() runs: the function frees the old state before attempting kzalloc() for the replacement, and if that allocation fails it returns without updating the pointer. Systems running AMD GPUs are affected, tracing back to kernel 4.15-era code, with fixes shipped in Linux 7.2.6 and 7.3-rc1. Triggering this requires local access to the amdgpu DRM device plus a carefully timed allocation failure (memory exhaustion), so while the vendor-scored severity is 7.8, the assessed impact is limited to a possible kernel crash (availability only) for a local user with existing device access; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV).
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Linux 7.2.6 and 7.3-rc1 (and any later stable/mainline release that contains the fixing commits 32bd68edbc6cbcfac0e4033b64f0bcadbf0efef5 and 0aeed866cb938943908c3ba46422128e49d2d080). The primary remediation is to upgrade the kernel to a version carrying the reordered allocation logic, or to apply the distribution's backported kernel update; the upstream stable patches are available at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/32bd68edbc6cbcfac0e4033b64f0bcadbf0efef5 and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/0aeed866cb938943908c3ba46422128e49d2d080, with tracking details at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-93175. Because exploitation is gated on a local user reaching the amdgpu CRTC reset path and forcing a kzalloc failure, useful compensating controls before patching are to restrict access to the DRM device nodes (/dev/dri/card* and renderD*) to trusted local users or a dedicated video/render group (trade-off: removes GPU acceleration for untrusted or multi-tenant local users) and to constrain memory pressure on systems running the amdgpu display stack via cgroup/VM limits and OOM monitoring so the required allocation failure is harder to induce (trade-off: workload tuning effort, no absolute guarantee against allocation failure at the critical instant). Disabling the amdgpu display stack or blacklisting the module removes the exposure entirely but sacrifices AMD GPU display and compute functionality, so it is only appropriate where the GPU is not required.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw lives in the AMD Display Core portion of the amdgpu DRM driver, specifically the CRTC state reset path used by the kernel's atomic modesetting framework. CRTC (cathode-ray tube controller) reset functions are expected to discard the current atomic state and replace it with a freshly zero-initialized one; amdgpu_dm_crtc_reset_state() instead freed the existing state object first and only then called kzalloc() for the new one. Because the state pointer was not updated on the failure path, an allocation failure (kzalloc returning NULL under memory pressure) left the CRTC referencing memory that had already been released - a classic use-after-free/dangling-pointer memory-safety defect in the CWE-416 family. The correct ordering, applied by the upstream fix, is to allocate the new state first and only free the old state once allocation succeeds, so a failure leaves the prior state intact and the function exits safely. This is an internal kernel state-management bug exposed through kernel APIs rather than a network-facing protocol issue; it affects the amdgpu display stack identified by the Linux kernel CPE (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux) and was found by the Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) using the SVACE static analyzer.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
drm/amd/display: Fix dangling pointer in CRTC reset function
amdgpu_dm_crtc_reset_state() frees the old state before allocating a new one. If kzalloc() fails, the function returns without updating the state pointer, leaving a dangling pointer to already freed memory.
Fix this by allocating the new state first. On allocation failure, the old state remains untouched and the function safely returns.
Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.

Executive ViewAI
Linux systems using AMD GPUs are exposed to a local denial-of-service condition in the kernel display driver that can crash the system and disrupt availability. The issue requires local device access and a rare memory-exhaustion timing, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so the immediate business risk is limited to availability on a subset of endpoints and servers. Leadership should ensure patch management covers the affected Linux kernel versions, because unpatched machines remain susceptible to local users causing downtime.
