Vulnerability Assessment

Exploitation Conditions

Requires local privileged access to the BPF subsystem (CAP_BPF or CAP_SYS_ADMIN) and a specific attach sequence: attaching a BPF tracing_multi (fentry-multi) link and then attaching an fentry link, after which releasing the link fails because register_fentry_multi() did not set ftrace_managed. Exploitation is limited by needing BPF privileges (not available to unprivileged users on hardened systems), local-only access (AV:L, no remote reachability), and use of the relatively new tracing_multi/fentry-multi feature; the observable effect is a kernel WARNING and mismanaged trampoline link rather than attacker-controlled corruption. No non-BPF default configuration is affected.

Impact

This is a high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk local kernel issue. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (7.8, AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) claims full confidentiality/integrity/availability impact, but the description does not support that: the bug is a missing 'ftrace_managed = true' flag in register_fentry_multi(), which causes the BPF tracing_multi link to fail to release, tripping a WARNING at kernel/bpf/trampoline.c:1727 in bpf_trampoline_multi_detach() during link teardown. That is a link-lifecycle/refcount management imbalance, not an attacker-controlled memory-disclosure or code-execution primitive, so the C:H/I:H rating appears overstated; realistic impact is availability-only (a WARN and a leaked/mismanaged trampoline link, at worst instability). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code are present in the input, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'. SSVC-wise: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact partial. Conflict to note: CVSS scores C:H/I:H/A:H while the described effect is a warning during link release triggered by a privileged BPF operation - verify impact with vendor; my independent read is roughly 3.5-4.5. CWE is listed as N/A. A patch is available.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user with BPF privileges (CAP_BPF/CAP_SYS_ADMIN) loads a BPF program, attaches it via a tracing_multi (fentry-multi) link, then attaches an fentry link over the same target; on teardown the tracing_multi link is not recognized as ftrace-managed and fails to release, tripping the kernel WARNING and leaving trampoline state inconsistent. No public proof-of-concept is referenced. Exploitation is purely local and requires the privileged BPF attach path, so it is not remotely reachable and not a widespread threat.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

Linux kernel BPF trampoline handling fails to mark tracing_multi trampolines as ftrace managed, so releasing a tracing_multi (fentry-multi) link after an fentry link has also been attached produces a kernel WARNING in bpf_trampoline_multi_detach and leaves the trampoline link improperly managed. Only systems where a user holds BPF privileges (CAP_BPF or CAP_SYS_ADMIN) and uses the newer tracing_multi/fentry-multi link types are affected, with local access required (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L); there is no remote reachability and no unprivileged path on hardened configurations. The observable impact is a warning and a leaked or mismanaged link rather than attacker-controlled memory corruption, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Linux 7.2.6 or 7.3-rc1 (or later) which contain the fix that sets ftrace_managed = true in register_fentry_multi(); alternatively backport the upstream stable commits 30bdd6d1384d894931f113eb595636092d8e650c and 280145253fd38fa975cc04963ddaf74c7f415011 from https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/30bdd6d1384d894931f113eb595636092d8e650c and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/280145253fd38fa975cc04963ddaf74c7f415011, or apply the vendor advisory linked via https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-93111. If immediate patching is not possible, the exposure is already gated by local BPF privileges, so the practical compensating controls are to ensure CAP_BPF/CAP_SYS_ADMIN (and unprivileged BPF, kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled) are restricted to trusted workloads and to avoid the triggering sequence of attaching a tracing_multi/fentry-multi link followed by an fentry link; the trade-off is loss of multi-function fentry instrumentation for those workloads. Disabling the tracing_multi feature entirely, where the kernel exposes a toggle, removes the warning path but also removes legitimate fentry-multi observability and is only suitable for environments that do not rely on it, and there is no configuration change that mitigates the issue for a privileged BPF user on an unpatched kernel.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The Linux kernel BPF subsystem attaches programs to kernel functions through trampolines, which are normally registered with ftrace and tracked via an ftrace_managed flag so that detach paths (bpf_trampoline_multi_detach, bpf_tracing_multi_link_release, bpf_link_free) can correctly release the underlying resources. The tracing_multi (fentry-multi) link type introduced for attaching one BPF program to multiple functions was registered through register_fentry_multi() without setting ftrace_managed = true, so when a tracing_multi link is attached and a fentry link is subsequently attached, the release path takes the wrong branch and triggers the WARNING at kernel/bpf/trampoline.c:1727. The root cause is a state/lifecycle bookkeeping defect in the trampoline registration code rather than a memory-safety flaw; no CWE was supplied with the record, though the behavior is characteristic of improper resource lifecycle or state management. The CVSS vector in the raw feed (7.8, C:H/I:H/A:H) overstates impact relative to the independent assessment, which finds only availability impact (C:N/I:N/A:L) because the condition yields a warning and inconsistent link state, not controllable corruption.

DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

bpf: Mark tracing_multi trampolines as ftrace managed

Since tracing_multi link does not set ftrace_managed, it would fail to release the tracing_multi link when attaching tracing_multi link and then attaching fentry link.

[ 3.714215] WARNING: kernel/bpf/trampoline.c:1727 at bpf_trampoline_multi_detach+0x20b/0x240, CPU#1: test_progs/97 ... [ 3.733170] bpf_tracing_multi_link_release+0x14/0x30 [ 3.733890] bpf_link_free+0x58/0x130 [ 3.734414] bpf_link_release+0x23/0x30

Fix it by setting 'ftrace_managed = true' in register_fentry_multi().

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity Linux kernel vulnerability (CVE-2026-93111) affects systems where users hold BPF privileges (CAP_BPF or CAP_SYS_ADMIN) and use newer tracing link types. Although exploitation requires local access and results only in a kernel warning and improperly managed tracer links-not memory corruption-organizations with such privileged users should patch promptly to prevent potential system instability. No public exploit code has been identified at the time of analysis.
