AnalysisAI

Privilege escalation in Apache Karaf versions before 4.4.12 allows any authenticated user of the shell or SSH console - including one holding only the low-privilege 'viewer' role - to abuse the config:install command and write attacker-controlled content into the sensitive ${karaf.etc} directory, escalating to full administrative control of the runtime. The flaw exists because config:install has no entry in the shipped etc/org.apache.karaf.command.acl.config.cfg ACL while unmatched commands fail open, and because karaf.secured.command.compulsory.roles ships commented out in etc/system.properties; with the -o/--override flag an existing file such as users.properties, keys.properties or host.key can be overwritten, and Felix FileInstall (felix.fileinstall.dir=${karaf.etc}) hot-reloads any dropped .cfg file without a restart. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires an authenticated account with access to the Karaf shell or SSH console holding any role, including the low-privilege 'viewer' role. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment No CVSS vector, EPSS score, KEV entry, or public POC is provided for CVE-2026-91085, so quantitative signals are entirely absent and the vendor rates it only 'moderate'. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade to Apache Karaf 4.4.12, which is the vendor-released fix per the 27/9/26 maintenance release announcement at https://karaf.apache.org/. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all Apache Karaf instances and identify any running versions before 4.4.12; restrict network and account access to the Karaf shell and SSH console to the minimum necessary administrators, remove or disable the config:install command for low-privilege roles by adding an explicit deny or exclusion in etc/org.apache.karaf.command.acl.config.cfg, uncomment and set karaf.secured.command.compulsory.roles in etc/system.properties so unmatched commands do not fail open, and enable file integrity monitoring on ${karaf.etc} with alerts for changes to users.properties, keys.properties, host.key, and new .cfg files. …
