MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated AVideo administrator account able to reach the CustomizeUser plugin's add.json.php endpoint and supply the field_name parameter (PR:L per CVSS). The payload is stored but only triggers when a victim actively views an extra-info page or profile form that renders the value through the typeToHTML function (UI:P) - so it is not zero-interaction. Limiting factors: administrative privilege needed to inject, dependence on the CustomizeUser plugin being present/enabled, and required victim page-view for execution; there is no availability impact (VA:N). |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 base score of 9.3 is driven by network vector, low complexity, and the high subsequent-system impact metrics (SC:H/SI:H) that 4.0 assigns to XSS that pivots into a victim's session. In practice the severity is tempered by the fact that injection requires an authenticated administrator (PR:L, arguably admin-level) and the payload fires only when a victim actively loads the affected page (UI:P), so this is not wormable or unauthenticated mass-exploitable. There is no EPSS-elevating signal here - no KEV listing and no published POC - so the realistic threat is a malicious or compromised admin, or an admin whose session is leveraged to persist script against other users/admins, and any operator running AVideo should still patch promptly since the stored payload can escalate to full account/session compromise of higher-privileged viewers. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A malicious or compromised AVideo administrator submits a crafted field_name containing a script payload to the CustomizeUser add.json.php endpoint, which stores it unescaped. When another administrator or user subsequently opens an extra-info page or profile form that renders the value through typeToHTML, the script executes in their browser, enabling session-cookie theft or actions performed as the victim. No public POC is currently identified, and exploitation requires the victim to load the affected page (UI:P). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 11, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in WWBN AVideo's CustomizeUser plugin lets an administrator persist an unsanitized field_name value through the add.json.php endpoint, which later executes as script when any user or admin renders the extra-info pages or profile forms via the typeToHTML function. The flaw affects AVideo up through commit c3edcc274c389816d434acadac07ee78eaf330c1 and was reported by VulnCheck; no public exploit identified at time of analysis and it is not in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (per the GitHub Security Advisory GHSA-7hj4-f9x4-gg7p); a released, tagged patched version is not independently confirmed in the provided data, so track that advisory and upgrade to the first release that incorporates the fix once published. Until then, apply specific compensating controls: restrict who holds AVideo administrator accounts and audit CustomizeUser field_name values for embedded markup; add server-side sanitization/output-encoding of the field_name parameter at the add.json.php handler and in the typeToHTML rendering path; and deploy a restrictive Content-Security-Policy (disallowing inline script) on profile and extra-info pages to blunt payload execution - noting that a strict CSP may break legitimate inline scripts or customization features and should be tested before enforcement. Review the referenced advisories for the authoritative fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
AVideo is an open-source PHP video-streaming/OTT platform (CPE cpe:2.3:a:wwbn:avideo). The root cause is CWE-79 (improper neutralization of input during web page generation): the CustomizeUser plugin accepts a field_name parameter and stores it verbatim in the datastore without output encoding or input sanitization. Because the typeToHTML helper later emits this stored value directly into the DOM of profile/extra-info pages, the injected markup is parsed as active HTML/JavaScript in the victim's authenticated session - a classic persistent (stored) XSS sink rather than a reflected one.

DescriptionCVE.org
AVideo through commit c3edcc274c389816d434acadac07ee78eaf330c1 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the CustomizeUser plugin where the field_name parameter is stored raw without sanitization. Administrators can inject malicious scripts via the add.json.php endpoint that execute when viewing extra info pages or profile forms that render the typeToHTML function.

Executive ViewAI
WWBN AVideo's CustomizeUser plugin contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that permits administrators to inject malicious JavaScript persisting across the platform, executing for all users viewing profiles and forms. A compromised or malicious admin can steal session credentials, hijack user accounts, and perform unauthorized actions affecting the entire user base.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: immediately disable or uninstall the CustomizeUser plugin; implement strict output encoding and HTML sanitization for all user-generated custom fields; deploy Web Application Firewall rules blocking JavaScript patterns in form fields; enforce Content Security Policy headers to prevent inline script execution; restrict add.json.php endpoint access to trusted administrative IP ranges only; conduct forensic audit of admin account access logs for evidence of prior compromise.
