| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the AD_Server plugin is explicitly installed and enabled on the target AVideo instance - this is a non-default, optional plugin and must be activated by an administrator. The attacker-controlled vmaps parameter must be base64/JSON-encoded and contain a non-empty VAST.campaing entry to trigger the code path that reads timeOffset and idTag. A victim must open the crafted VMAP URL directly or visit a video page referencing it (passive user interaction, UI:P); the victim does not need to take an active download or approval action, but must be induced to visit the URL. No authentication is required on the attacker side (PR:N). Exploitation is bounded to ad injection and attacker-controlled cross-origin requests from the victim's browser - no server-side code execution is possible through this vector. AVideo instances with the AD_Server plugin disabled, or not publicly accessible, are not exploitable. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 score of 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:L/VI:L/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N) accurately reflects moderate severity. The unauthenticated network access (PR:N/AV:N) and absence of special attack requirements (AC:L/AT:N) lower the exploitation barrier, but the mandatory victim interaction (UI:P - victim must open a crafted URL or video page) significantly limits scalability and automated mass exploitation. Real-world impact is confined to ad injection and cross-origin requests from the victim browser to attacker-controlled ad infrastructure; there is no server-side code execution, despite the 'RCE' tag present in source metadata (which is not supported by the description or CVSS impact scores of C:L/I:L). The subsequent-system impacts (SC:L/SI:L) reflect cross-origin requests reaching attacker-controlled ad servers from the victim's session. No EPSS data is available for this CVE, no KEV listing exists, and no public exploit code has been identified. The non-default AD_Server plugin requirement further constrains the real-world exposed population to AVideo instances that have explicitly enabled this plugin. This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue for affected deployments, not an emergency. |

XML injection in WWBN AVideo's AD_Server plugin (plugin/AD_Server/VMAP.php) allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to inject arbitrary VMAP ad-break nodes into video ad playlist responses when the AD_Server plugin is enabled. When a victim opens a crafted VMAP URL or a video page referencing it, the player's IMA ad client follows the injected ad tag URIs, enabling attacker-controlled ad injection and cross-origin requests from the victim's playback session. The vulnerability was unfixed at time of reporting, and no public exploit has been identified.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch has been identified at the time of reporting; the issue was unfixed when disclosed. The most effective compensating control is to disable the AD_Server plugin entirely via AVideo's plugin management interface, which eliminates the vulnerable VMAP endpoint with no impact to core video functionality. If disabling is not feasible, operators should implement a web application firewall or reverse-proxy rule blocking access to plugin/AD_Server/VMAP.php, or restrict that path to a trusted IP allowlist, preventing unauthenticated public access. Additionally, restricting the entire AVideo instance behind network-layer authentication (e.g., VPN or HTTP basic auth at the load balancer) would prevent unauthenticated exploitation at the cost of increased access friction. VMAP (Video Multiple Ad Playlist) is an IAB-standard XML schema used by video players to schedule ad breaks. AVideo's AD_Server plugin endpoint (plugin/AD_Server/VMAP.php) decodes a base64- and JSON-encoded vmaps request parameter, extracts timeOffset and idTag values via AD_Server::getVMAPSFromRequest(), and writes these values directly into VMAP XML attribute nodes without XML entity encoding. Critically, the vmaps parameter is not processed by the platform-wide security filter ($securityFilter in objects/security.php), bypassing the application's primary input sanitization layer. The endpoint emits Content-Type: application/xml and is reachable without authentication. The CWE-91 (XML Injection) root cause is untrusted user-controlled data inserted into a structured XML document without encoding, allowing structural manipulation - specifically injecting <vmap:AdBreak> and <vmap:AdTagURI> elements. The player's IMA integration path (afterVideoJS → PlayerSkins::setIMAADTag) then fetches the attacker-supplied ad tag URIs, completing the attack. DescriptionCVE.org
WWBN AVideo at commit c3edcc274c389816d434acadac07ee78eaf330c1 and earlier contains an XML injection vulnerability in plugin/AD_Server/VMAP.php, which is reachable without authentication when the AD_Server plugin is enabled. The script emits Content-Type: application/xml and writes the timeOffset and idTag values returned by AD_Server::getVMAPSFromRequest() directly into VMAP attributes without encoding. Those values originate from the base64- and JSON-decoded $_REQUEST['vmaps'] parameter, which is not covered by $securityFilter in objects/security.php. A remote attacker can craft a vmaps value (containing a non-empty VAST.campaing entry) and induce a user to open the resulting VMAP URL or a video page using it, injecting arbitrary <vmap:AdBreak> and <vmap:AdTagURI>/AdSource nodes into the generated XML. The player's IMA path (afterVideoJS -> PlayerSkins::setIMAADTag) then requests the attacker-supplied ad URLs, resulting in ad injection and cross-origin requests from the victim's playback session. The issue was unfixed at the time of reporting.
