MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated WordPress account at contributor level or above on a site running JSM Show Post Metadata before 4.9.1, and the plugin's admin-facing meta box must be in use. Exploitation is NOT self-firing: a higher-privileged user (editor/administrator) must open and review the attacker's post in wp-admin for the injected script to execute (UI:R). Limiting factors: an attacker must first obtain a contributor account (registration open to untrusted users, or a compromised low-priv account), and payload execution depends on admin review activity - this is a stored/second-order XSS, not a remote-unauthenticated one-shot. |
| Impact | This is a real but bounded issue, not a high-urgency emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 6.8) contains two internal inconsistencies with the description that defenders should note. First, the vector assigns PR:H, but the description explicitly states 'contributor-level access and above' - contributor is a low-privilege authenticated WordPress role, which maps to PR:L, not PR:H; this discrepancy means the barrier to exploitation is LOWER than the vector's PR:H implies. Second, the C:H/I:H/A:H triad overstates the impact for a stored XSS that fires in a reviewer's browser: a session-riding XSS against an admin realistically enables account/site takeover (justifying elevated integrity), but full C:H/I:H/A:H across all three is generous; a C:L/I:L-leaning score is more defensible, though the admin-takeover ceiling is why the vendor rated it high. The vector's S:U is also arguable - script executing in a higher-privileged user's browser context crosses a privilege boundary and could support S:C. There is NO EPSS score, NO CISA KEV listing, and NO public POC provided, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Net: prioritize patching for sites that grant contributor accounts to untrusted users, but this is not a mass-exploitation candidate - it requires an authenticated foothold plus an admin actively reviewing the malicious post. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds (or socially engineers) a contributor account on a WordPress site running JSM Show Post Metadata submits a post whose post meta key contains a crafted JavaScript payload embedded in an inline event-handler attribute. When an editor or administrator opens that post for review in wp-admin, the plugin's meta box renders the unescaped key and the script executes in the reviewer's authenticated session, enabling actions with the reviewer's privileges. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the JSM Show Post Metadata WordPress plugin before 4.9.1 lets an authenticated contributor-level user inject arbitrary JavaScript that runs in the browser session of a higher-privileged editor or administrator. The flaw is a missing output-escape of a post meta key that is echoed into an inline event-handler attribute inside the plugin's admin-facing meta box; the payload only fires when a privileged user opens the attacker's post in wp-admin to review it. Exploitation is therefore second-order and UI-dependent rather than remote-unauthenticated: it requires a contributor account on a site running the vulnerable plugin plus reviewer interaction, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade the JSM Show Post Metadata plugin to version 4.9.1 or later - the vendor has released a patch (advisory: https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/1699d3aa-29ca-4197-8e3b-0b03ecce751a/); patch status is "Vendor-released patch: 4.9.1" based on the fixed version boundary in the affected-range data. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to deactivate the plugin entirely, which removes the vulnerable meta box and eliminates the sink at the cost of losing the metadata display feature. A less disruptive option is to tighten the authoring privilege model: disable open user registration, audit existing Contributor accounts, and temporarily remove or downgrade Contributor-role users so that untrusted accounts cannot create the posts that carry the malicious meta key - note this does not remove the vulnerability and is only as strong as your account hygiene. You can also restrict wp-admin access (for example, via IP allow-listing or a security plugin's admin-area protection) so that the rendering path is reachable only from trusted networks; this limits exposure to the reviewer's console but breaks remote admin workflows. Standard WAF or CSP rules targeting inline script execution can reduce blast radius but should not be relied on as the primary fix. Because exploitation is a stored XSS that fires on reviewer interaction, also sweep existing posts authored by low-privileged accounts for unexpected meta keys before and after patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is a WordPress plugin that renders post metadata into an administration meta box. The root cause is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation, i.e. cross-site scripting): a post meta *key* - attacker-controllable by any user who can create/edit posts, such as a Contributor - is concatenated into an inline event-handler attribute in the generated HTML without escaping or attribute-context encoding. Because the sink is an HTML attribute that expects JavaScript, normal HTML entity encoding is insufficient in isolation; the meta key value must be strictly validated (e.g. restricted to an allow-list of expected key names) and/or encoded for the specific attribute context. The result is a stored (second-order) XSS that is persisted in the database with the post and rendered to any privileged user who views the post's edit screen. WordPress role design is central here: Contributors can author and submit posts but cannot publish them, so the injected content waits for an Editor or Administrator to open the post during the review workflow. The independent assessment rates this CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N - network-reachable, low attack complexity, authenticated at low privilege (PR:L), requiring user interaction (UI:R), with scope change (S:C) because the script executes in the higher-privileged user's browser context, and limited confidentiality/integrity impact. This is intentionally lower than some other available scores because the attack chain depends on both an attacker-held contributor account and a privileged reviewer's click.

The JSM Show Post Metadata WordPress plugin before 4.9.1 does not properly escape a post meta key before outputting it into an inline event-handler attribute in an admin-facing meta box, allowing users with contributor-level access and above to inject arbitrary JavaScript that executes in the session of a higher-privileged user who reviews the affected post.
