The jQuery googleslides plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'googleslides' shortcode in all versions up to, and including, 1.3. This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user supplied attributes (userid, albumid, authkey, imgmax, maxresults, random, caption, albumlink, time, and fadespeed) in the googleslides_handler() function, which interpolates the attribute values directly into single-quoted HTML attributes without using esc_attr(). This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.
AnalysisAI
Stored Cross-Site Scripting in the jQuery googleslides WordPress plugin (all versions through 1.3) allows authenticated attackers holding contributor-level access or higher to inject persistent malicious scripts via the 'googleslides' shortcode. The vulnerability is confirmed by Wordfence (ENISA EUVD-2026-32069) and traces to the googleslides_handler() function directly interpolating ten shortcode attribute values into HTML without the WordPress-standard esc_attr() sanitization. The CVSS Changed Scope (S:C) reflects that injected scripts execute in victims' browsers outside the plugin's own domain; EPSS at 0.03% (9th percentile) and absence from CISA KEV indicate no public exploit or confirmed active exploitation at time of analysis.
Technical ContextAI
The vulnerable component is the jQuery googleslides plugin for WordPress, versions 0 through 1.3 inclusive, as confirmed by ENISA EUVD-2026-32069 and NVD references to the plugin's trac repository (plugins.trac.wordpress.org/browser/jquery-googleslides/tags/1.3/init.php, lines 39 and 52). The googleslides_handler() function processes WordPress shortcode attributes - userid, albumid, authkey, imgmax, maxresults, random, caption, albumlink, time, and fadespeed - and interpolates their values directly into single-quoted HTML attributes in the rendered output. WordPress provides the esc_attr() function specifically to prevent this class of vulnerability by encoding characters such as single quotes, but it is entirely absent from this function. CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) is the precise root cause: unescaped, attacker-controlled data flows from shortcode input through googleslides_handler() into the HTML document served to site visitors. The CVSS S:C (Changed Scope) flag is warranted because script execution occurs in the browser's context for the victim's session, which is a different security principal than the WordPress plugin itself.
RemediationAI
No patched version has been confirmed in the available data - all NVD and ENISA references point to the vulnerable 1.3 codebase, and no subsequent release is documented. The primary recommended action is to deactivate and remove the jQuery googleslides plugin immediately until a patched version is released and verified. Monitor the plugin's WordPress.org listing and the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/3f8e363d-60ec-4e86-856c-c4ffc11fe690 for a fix release. As a compensating control, restrict WordPress contributor-level role assignment to fully trusted accounts and audit existing contributors; note this reduces but does not eliminate risk if any authorized contributor account is compromised. Applying a WAF rule targeting script injection patterns in shortcode attribute values may block simple payloads but should not be the sole control, as it is bypassable by encoding variants. Disabling the shortcode entirely via a must-use plugin snippet is a stronger compensating control if the plugin cannot be removed, though it will break the plugin's functionality.
