Exploitation Conditions

Attacker must have a valid Jenkins account with at minimum Overall/Read permission - the lowest permission level assignable in Jenkins, typically granted to all authenticated users in most organizational deployments. No additional roles, job ownership, or admin rights are required. Jenkins must be accessible over the network (AV:N, typical for any web-accessible CI/CD instance). No special plugin configuration or non-default Jenkins setting is required; the vulnerable code path is in Stapler core and is exercised by standard Jenkins form submissions. Exploitation is limited to authenticated sessions: anonymous (unauthenticated) access is not sufficient unless Overall/Read has been granted to anonymous, which is a non-default but non-rare configuration in internal Jenkins instances.

Impact

The CVSS 8.8 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) accurately reflects the attack surface: network-reachable, no complex preconditions, and only Overall/Read permission required. In most Jenkins deployments this is the baseline permission for any authenticated user - including LDAP/SSO accounts, service accounts, and developer logins - making the effective attacker population very large. The high C/I/A impact is consistent with the ability to instantiate arbitrary configuration-related types, which in a plugin-rich Jenkins instance can expose credential stores, job configurations, secret management objects, and execution primitives. No public exploit or active exploitation (CISA KEV) is identified at time of analysis, and EPSS data is not provided in the source, slightly moderating urgency. However, deserialization/unsafe-type-binding gadget chains in Jenkins are historically well-understood by researchers and the low privilege bar means this will attract rapid exploitation tooling development. The S:U (unchanged scope) metric may slightly understate lateral risk given that Jenkins controllers manage build agents and can push code/artifacts to downstream systems.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated Jenkins user with only Overall/Read permission crafts an HTTP POST request to a Jenkins form endpoint, supplying form field values that reference a configuration-related Java class outside the type hierarchy expected by the binding target. Stapler reflectively instantiates the attacker-specified type, allowing the attacker to trigger side effects from the object's constructor or setters - for example, loading credentials from disk, overwriting configuration files, or invoking internal APIs - resulting in full controller compromise without any elevated privileges.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 02, 2026

Unsafe type instantiation during form data binding in Jenkins Stapler allows low-privileged authenticated users to trigger instantiation of arbitrary object types unrelated to the intended field type, achieving full compromise (C:H/I:H/A:H) of the Jenkins controller. Affected are Jenkins 2.579 and earlier and LTS 2.568.2 and earlier, via Stapler 2107.v8dfcb_e8ed317 and earlier (excluding the backport 2088.2093.vd7c3e58008a_6). The root cause is CWE-502-class unsafe deserialization/type-binding: Stapler fails to constrain which Java types may be instantiated when processing attacker-controlled HTTP form submissions. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing is identified at time of analysis, but Jenkins is pervasively deployed in CI/CD pipelines and the low privilege bar (Overall/Read) makes this a high-priority patch target.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Jenkins weekly to version 2.580 or later, or upgrade Jenkins LTS to version 2.568.3 or later; these releases bundle the fixed Stapler version that enforces type-compatible instantiation during form data binding. The vendor advisory is at https://www.jenkins.io/security/advisory/2026-09-02/#SECURITY-3915. If immediate upgrade is not possible, a compensating control is to revoke Overall/Read permission from untrusted or low-trust user accounts, restricting Jenkins access to vetted operators only - however this is operationally disruptive in most environments where broad read access is intentional. Restricting network access to the Jenkins web UI to known IP ranges limits exposure to insider or VPN-adjacent threats but does not prevent exploitation by already-authenticated users. No plugin-level workaround exists because the flaw resides in Stapler core form binding, shared across all Jenkins plugins.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Stapler is the embedded web framework powering Jenkins, responsible for routing HTTP requests and binding submitted form data to Java object graphs. Its form data binding mechanism reflectively instantiates Java types based on form field values - but the affected versions do not enforce that instantiated types are compatible with (or subtypes of) the field type declared by the receiving Java class. CWE-502 (Deserialization of Untrusted Data) captures this class of flaw: an attacker who can submit crafted form parameters can cause Stapler to instantiate configuration-related types that were never intended to be reachable through that binding path, potentially exercising gadget chains within the Jenkins plugin ecosystem or directly altering sensitive configuration objects. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:jenkins_project:jenkins:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covering the Jenkins core distribution; the Stapler library is bundled within Jenkins core, so all deployments through version 2.579 (weekly) and 2.568.2 (LTS) carry the vulnerable Stapler build.

DescriptionCVE.org

In Stapler 2107.v8dfcb_e8ed317 and earlier, except 2088.2093.vd7c3e58008a_6, included in Jenkins 2.579 and earlier, LTS 2.568.2 and earlier, Stapler does not restrict the types of objects that can be instantiated via form data binding to those compatible with the expected field type, allowing attackers with Overall/Read permission to instantiate types related to configuration for which that field type was not intended.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Jenkins platforms in versions 2.579 and earlier can be fully compromised by any user with minimal read-level permissions, potentially allowing attackers to manipulate builds, steal secrets, and redirect deployments across an organization's software delivery infrastructure. While no public exploit identified at time of analysis, this vulnerability poses immediate threat to organizations given the low privilege barrier makes it accessible to numerous internal users and service accounts. With no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, organizations must implement urgent compensating controls to protect this critical CI/CD component.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Until patch availability: (1) Enforce principle of least privilege across all Jenkins accounts by removing Overall/Read permissions from all non-essential users and service accounts; (2) Segment Jenkins controllers at network level with firewall rules restricting inbound connections to only known CI/CD agents and administrative systems; (3) Enable comprehensive audit logging and alerting on all form submissions and object instantiation patterns with real-time anomaly detection; (4) Deploy Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to identify and block suspicious form payloads attempting arbitrary Java type instantiation; (5) Require multi-factor authentication for all authenticated access to Jenkins controllers.
