| Exploitation Conditions | The bypass requires only that the attacking client omit the User-Agent header entirely - the default behavior in some scripting and automation contexts - or send a User-Agent string matching patterns such as 'curl', 'bot', 'crawler', or 'spider'. No authentication, no account, no elevated privilege, and no non-default server configuration is required; the flaw is present in default deployments of AVideo wherever the login endpoint is network-accessible. Exploitation is constrained by the need to reach the target endpoints over the network, so AVideo instances deployed exclusively on internal networks with strict perimeter controls face substantially lower immediate risk. Successful exploitation of the bypass does not itself grant access - the attacker still requires valid credentials matched from a password list or prior breach data, so accounts protected by strong, unique passwords remain resistant even under unlimited guessing. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) accurately reflects the near-trivial exploitation conditions: omitting the User-Agent header or using curl's default agent string is a one-line change to any HTTP client, requiring no target-specific knowledge beyond the endpoint URL. The high confidentiality impact (VC:H) is well-founded given that successful credential enumeration yields full account access. EPSS data is absent from the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified; the absence of a CISA KEV listing means active exploitation is not confirmed at time of writing. Despite the lack of KEV confirmation, the exploitability profile is effectively equivalent to a misconfigured open endpoint - the bypass requires no exploit kit and is fully reproducible by anyone reading the advisory. Organizations running AVideo as a public-facing service should prioritize remediation; the rate-limiting mechanism being silently defeated means all accounts protected only by that control are exposed to unconstrained credential guessing. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker targeting a publicly accessible AVideo instance uses curl or any scripted HTTP client with the User-Agent header stripped, sending a continuous stream of POST requests to login.json.php while cycling through a credential list. Because each request is misclassified as a bot and the attempt counter is never written to cache, no lockout or throttle is triggered regardless of request volume. No publicly available POC code has been identified, but the technique is fully described in the advisory and requires no specialized tooling beyond a standard HTTP client. |

Alert meAnalysisAI
Rate-limiting bypass in WWBN AVideo (through commit e01e41ecc) allows unauthenticated remote attackers to conduct unlimited brute-force attacks against login.json.php and 13 other protected endpoints by exploiting a logic flaw in enforceRateLimit(). The function relies on ObjectYPT::setCacheGlobal to persist per-client attempt counters, but silently discards those writes whenever isBot() classifies the client as a bot - which occurs by default for any request omitting a User-Agent header or using agent strings matching 'curl', 'bot', 'crawler', or 'spider'. No active exploitation has been confirmed at time of analysis, but the trivial bypass mechanism makes this immediately usable for credential stuffing without any specialized tooling.
RemediationAI
Consult and apply the fix referenced in the vendor GitHub security advisory at https://github.com/WWBN/AVideo/security/advisories/GHSA-6893-mcgv-9p2x - no specific patched release version was independently confirmed from the input data, so operators should verify the fixed commit or release tag directly from that advisory. While awaiting patch deployment, effective compensating controls include deploying a reverse proxy or WAF rule that enforces its own rate limiting on login.json.php and the 13 other affected endpoints at the network layer, completely bypassing the broken application-level control. Configuring that proxy to reject or throttle requests that omit the User-Agent header eliminates the primary bypass vector, though this may affect legitimate automation or monitoring clients and may require allowlisting of known internal agents. If the installed AVideo version supports account lockout or CAPTCHA on login, enabling those features provides an additional application-layer barrier independent of the flawed rate-limiting path.

Technical ContextAI · show details
WWBN AVideo is a PHP-based open-source video streaming and sharing platform. The vulnerability resides in enforceRateLimit(), a shared gateway function enforcing attempt-count limits on login.json.php and 13 additional endpoints. Attempt tracking is implemented via ObjectYPT::setCacheGlobal, which persists per-client counters to a cache layer. The flaw emerges from the interaction between this cache function and isBot(): when isBot() identifies a client as a bot - triggered by an absent User-Agent header or by string matches against 'curl', 'bot', 'crawler', 'spider' - setCacheGlobal silently discards the counter write rather than persisting it. As a result, the counter remains at zero for every subsequent request from that client and the rate limit never activates. CWE-307 (Improper Restriction of Excessive Authentication Attempts) directly describes this root cause: the protection mechanism exists in code but is rendered inoperable by the silent-discard execution path. The affected CPE cpe:2.3:a:wwbn:avideo:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates all tracked versions are affected.

DescriptionCVE.org
WWBN AVideo (current e01e41ecc and earlier) contains a brute-force rate limiting bypass in enforceRateLimit(), which protects login.json.php and 13 other endpoints. The function stores its attempt counter via a cache layer (ObjectYPT::setCacheGlobal) that silently discards writes for any client identified as a bot by isBot(). Because isBot() treats a missing User-Agent header as a bot by default - and also matches common bot identifiers such as 'curl', 'bot', 'crawler', and 'spider' - the counter never increments for such clients, so the rate limit never fires. An unauthenticated attacker can therefore submit unlimited login attempts (e.g., by omitting the User-Agent header or using curl's default User-Agent), enabling unrestricted password-guessing attacks.
