MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated account with the Author role or higher on the target WordPress site; the attacker injects a stored XSS payload into one of Robo Gallery's image settings (the specific gallery image configuration fields that are output without sanitisation/escaping on the gallery page). The payload executes when any visitor - including an administrator - renders the affected gallery page. Notably, exploitation does NOT require the unfiltered_html capability, so the standard WordPress multisite hardening that strips unfiltered_html does NOT mitigate this issue. Limiting factors: exploitation is gated on possessing at least Author privileges (not anonymous), and the payload only fires when a victim actually views the gallery page containing the stored payload (user interaction required); sites with no untrusted Author-or-above accounts are at substantially lower practical risk. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-risk, authenticated stored XSS (CWE-79) in the Robo Gallery WordPress plugin, best treated as an elevated-priority patch for multi-author/multisite WordPress deployments rather than an emergency. The input CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, score 6.8) is internally inconsistent with the description and should be treated with caution: the description states exploitation requires only the Author role, which maps to PR:L (not PR:H), and a stored XSS that fires in an administrator's browser is a cross-context impact that normally warrants S:C with LOW C/I and no availability impact - the input's C:H/I:H/A:H and S:U overstate direct technical impact for an XSS. No EPSS score and no SSVC decision data were provided, so automatability and exploitation-likelihood signals cannot be compared. The vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV (no active exploitation signal), but publicly available exploit code exists via the WPScan advisory, so the realistic threat is an insider or compromised low-privilege (Author) account escalating toward administrator takeover via admin-viewed stored payloads. Net: a real priority where untrusted Author-level users exist (especially multisite, since the flaw bypasses the unfiltered_html restriction), but lower urgency on single-admin sites where no untrusted Author accounts exist. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user with Author-level access (self-registered on an open multi-author site, or a compromised author account) saves a malicious script payload into one of Robo Gallery's unsanitised image settings. When an administrator or any visitor later views the affected gallery page, the stored JavaScript executes in their browser, enabling session/cookie theft or admin-context actions such as creating a new admin user - and because the plugin does not rely on the unfiltered_html capability, this works even on multisite where that capability is normally stripped. A public proof-of-concept is documented in the WPScan advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 11, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the Robo Gallery WordPress plugin before 5.2.6 lets an authenticated attacker holding the Author role or higher save a malicious payload inside one of the plugin's image settings, which the gallery page then outputs without sanitisation or escaping so the script executes in the browser of any visitor viewing that gallery - including administrators - and notably even on multisite installs where the unfiltered_html capability has been removed. Publicly available exploit code exists and the vendor has released a fix in 5.2.6. Exploitation is gated on possessing at least Author-level access and on a victim actually rendering the poisoned gallery page, so this is a moderate-risk, elevated-priority patch rather than an emergency, and sites with no untrusted Author-or-above accounts carry substantially lower practical risk.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 5.2.6. Upgrade the Robo Gallery WordPress plugin to version 5.2.6 or later as the primary fix, and verify the installed version on every site in the estate since the plugin is frequently deployed per-site with independent update state; the WPScan advisory at https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/3bf12831-e386-4a69-857b-3dda05ee0bce/ and the NVD entry at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-81153 document the issue. Because a patch is available, the cleanest path is simply to apply it; do not rely on the usual WordPress mitigation of removing the unfiltered_html capability, which the advisory notes does not mitigate this vulnerability, and therefore is not a valid compensating control here. If immediate patching is not possible, the most effective stopgap is to eliminate the attack prerequisite by restricting the Author role and above to fully trusted accounts, temporarily reassigning or removing Author privileges from untrusted users, and auditing existing galleries and image settings meta for injected markup so previously stored payloads are cleaned rather than merely prevented (be aware that demoting authors will block their legitimate publishing workflow). Deactivating the plugin entirely removes the risk but breaks gallery rendering and any shortcodes already embedded in published content, so treat it as a last resort on high-value multisite networks where untrusted Author accounts cannot be withdrawn. Broad WAF or mod_security XSS signature rules provide only partial value against stored payloads that are served from already-persisted database content, and should be considered supplementary rather than a substitute for upgrading to 5.2.6.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a classic stored (persistent) cross-site scripting issue, classified CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation), in the WordPress plugin Robo Gallery. Image settings associated with a gallery are persisted server-side and later rendered into the gallery page markup without sanitisation or output escaping, so attacker-controlled markup is stored and re-served to every subsequent viewer rather than being neutralised at write or read time. The interesting WordPress-specific nuance is the capability model: WordPress normally disallows the unfiltered_html capability for Author-level users on single-site installs and strips it broadly on multisite, which is a common hardening assumption for limiting XSS by low-trust authors - here the plugin writes and emits its own gallery data independently of that capability check, so the standard unfiltered_html mitigation does not apply. The CPE record (cpe:2.3:a:unknown:robo_gallery:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) confirms the affected component but shows no formally assigned vendor namespace, and EUVD likewise lists the affected range as Robo Gallery 0 through versions below 5.2.6. The published CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, score 6.8) rates required privileges as high, whereas the independent assessment treats the prerequisite as the Author role (PR:L) with scope change; the operational requirement in both readings is an authenticated, non-anonymous account on the target site, and the user-interaction requirement (a victim viewing the gallery) is consistent across both. The practical consequence of a successful payload is script execution in the victim's browser origin, which can be leveraged for session abuse or privileged actions if an administrator is the viewer, though the independent assessment characterises confidentiality and integrity impact as limited rather than a full site compromise.

The Robo Gallery WordPress plugin before 5.2.6 does not sanitise and escape some of its image settings before outputting them in a gallery page, allowing users with the Author role and above to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks that execute in the browser of any visitor viewing the gallery, including administrators, even where the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed such as on multisite.
