Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 02, 2026
Improper authorization in Craft CMS 5.x allows any authenticated control panel user to change their own password without supplying the current credential or holding an elevated session, and allows users holding the Edit users permission to reset other users' passwords - including administrator accounts - enabling full account takeover. The flaw exists in the elements/save action, where the UserPasswordValidator mass-assigns the newPassword field outside of any scenario restriction, bypassing the dedicated users/set-password action that enforces elevated session checks. No active exploitation is confirmed (not in CISA KEV); vendor-released patch is available in version 5.10.8.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Craft CMS to version 5.10.8, which contains the fix for this authorization bypass (commit cbdf45fbd3ab548b147d7de375f6f6f580b7c294). The release notes confirm a 'high-severity authorization bypass vulnerability' was patched in this release. The advisory is available at https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-p8x7-9vfw-p7vc. Until patching is possible, restrict control panel access to the minimum necessary set of accounts, and revoke or avoid granting the Edit users permission to any untrusted or low-privilege users, as this permission enables the cross-user account-takeover variant. There is no known configuration-level toggle to disable the elements/save action selectively without breaking CMS functionality, so the upgrade path is the definitive remediation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Craft CMS (composer package craftcms/cms) is a PHP-based content management system. The vulnerable component is the generic element-save controller action (elements/save), which handles saving User elements among others. According to the GHSA advisory, UserPasswordValidator attaches only a safe validator to the newPassword field without specifying an on scenario restriction. In Yii2 (the framework underlying Craft CMS), this means newPassword becomes mass-assignable during any element save scenario, including the generic one that does not enforce elevated session verification. The dedicated users/set-password endpoint, which normally requires the user to confirm their current credentials or hold an elevated session, is entirely bypassed. CPE cpe:2.3:a:craftcms:cms:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers versions >= 5.0.0-RC1 and < 5.10.8. Root cause class is CWE-285 (Improper Authorization) - specifically, a missing authorization guard on a sensitive field during mass assignment.

2DescriptionCVE.org
The vulnerability allows any authenticated user to change their own password without providing the current password or having an active elevated session. It also allows the attacker to change other users’ passwords if the attacker’s account has Edit users permission (which doesn’t allow changing others’ passwords) and lacks Administrate users permission (which is required to change others’ passwords).
Executive ViewAI
Craft CMS 5.x contains an authorization bypass in the password reset function, allowing any authenticated control panel user to change passwords for any account, including administrators, enabling complete account takeover. Organizations running multi-user Craft CMS 5.x installations face immediate risk of unauthorized administrative access, data exposure, and service disruption.
