| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated subscriber-level WordPress account on a site running Directorist 8.9.1 through 8.9.4 (the unscoped REST collection endpoint was reintroduced in 8.9.1); sites on 8.8.1-8.9 are NOT vulnerable because the endpoint was correctly scoped there. Exploitation is limited by the need for account access - realistic on sites that allow open/self-registration, which is common for directory/classified plugins, but blocked where registration is closed. No user interaction or admin privileges are needed; the attacker simply invokes the customer order/payment REST collection endpoint that fails to filter results to the requesting user. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity broken-object-level-authorization flaw (CWE-639, IDOR). The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N = 4.3) is internally consistent with the description: a network-reachable REST endpoint, low attacker complexity, and a low privilege requirement (any subscriber-level account, which many Directorist sites permit via open registration). No EPSS score, KEV entry, or public POC was supplied, so there is no signal of active exploitation or automation - this reads as a real but not urgent priority rather than a high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk item or an emergency. The one contestable metric is confidentiality: the vendor rated C:L, but the flaw exposes EVERY customer's order and payment records in bulk (PII, contact and transaction data), which arguably warrants C:H - I diverge on this point below. The most notable nuance is versioning: the description states 8.8.1-8.9 are NOT affected (endpoint was correctly scoped in 8.8.1) and the bug was REINTRODUCED in 8.9.1 - a regression, which conflicts with the EUVD affected-range of '8.5 <8.9.5'. Defenders on 8.9.1-8.9.4 are exposed; those on 8.8.1-8.9 are not. Verify exact affected build against the WPScan advisory before triaging. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker registers a free subscriber-level account on a Directorist-powered site (self-registration is commonly enabled) and authenticates. They then call the unscoped REST collection endpoint, which fails to filter results to the requesting user, returning every customer's order and payment records. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires only a routine authenticated REST request and low complexity. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026
Subscriber-level WordPress users can read every customer's order and payment records on sites running the Directorist business-directory plugin 8.9.1 through 8.9.4, because one of its REST collection endpoints is not scoped to the requesting user. The flaw is an authenticated insecure-direct-object-reference / broken-object-level-authorization issue (CWE-639) that is remotely reachable and needs no user interaction - exploitation requires a low-privilege account, which is realistic on directory and classifieds sites that allow open or self-service registration, but is blocked where registration is closed. The vendor has released a patch in 8.9.5; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and there is no CISA KEV listing or other confirmation of active exploitation.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 8.9.5 - upgrade the Directorist plugin from any 8.9.1-8.9.4 installation to 8.9.5 or later, using the WordPress plugin updater or a managed deployment, and confirm the installed version string afterwards; advisory details are available at https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/1b8acd9b-8309-4453-a7f7-61a463fe9ae1/. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to remove the authenticated-subscriber attack surface: disable open/self-service user registration on the site (Settings > General, plus any membership plugin), which prevents unknown parties from obtaining the subscriber account required for exploitation at the cost of blocking legitimate customer self-signup for the directory; pair this with an audit of existing subscriber accounts and removal of those that are not genuinely needed. Where registration must stay open, block access to the plugin's customer order/payment REST collection endpoint for subscriber-role users via a WAF rule or a small must-use plugin that re-registers or short-circuits the route, accepting that this may break legitimate front-end order/payment views for logged-in customers. Because this is a regression, also check whether the same route is exposed under other namespace or version prefixes on the site, review web and application logs for subscriber-role requests to that endpoint to determine whether customer order and payment data was already harvested, and rotate or notify on any payment identifiers exposed as appropriate to your data-protection obligations. Generic hardening - least-privilege role review and keeping other plugins current - reduces but does not remove the exposure, and no patch version other than 8.9.5 (or later) should be treated as fixed for this issue.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is a REST collection endpoint in the Directorist WordPress plugin that returns customer order and payment records. Under WordPress REST conventions such a route is registered with register_rest_route() and protected by a permission_callback as well as a query filter that constrains results to the current user; here the endpoint retained only a coarse capability check (any logged-in subscriber passes) while omitting the per-object/per-user ownership constraint, which is the classic CWE-639 authorization-bypass-through-user-controlled-key pattern (also described as IDOR or BOLA). The result is that an authenticated low-privilege account can enumerate the collection and receive records belonging to other customers. The history matters for scoping: the endpoint was correctly scoped in 8.8.1, the scoping was lost with a regression introduced in 8.9.1, and it was restored in 8.9.5, so versions 8.8.1 through 8.9 are not vulnerable and versions before 8.8.1 were not vulnerable in this particular way. Note that NVD's published CVSS 3.1 score of 4.3 rates confidentiality impact as Low (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N), whereas the independent assessment raises confidentiality to High (C:H) on the basis that the exposure covers the entire population of customer order and payment records rather than a single record; integrity and availability impacts remain None in both readings, and there is no scope change.

AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N
PR:L for a subscriber account and AV:N/AC:L for a simple REST call; I raise C to H over the vendor's C:L because it exposes every customer's payment/order PII in bulk, with no integrity or availability impact.

Lifecycle Timeline
4DescriptionCVE.org
The Directorist: AI-Powered Business Directory, Listings & Classified Ads WordPress plugin before 8.9.5 does not scope one of its REST collection endpoints to the requesting user, allowing users with a subscriber-level account to read every customer's order and payment records.
Versions 8.8.1 to 8.9 are not affected. The endpoint was scoped correctly in 8.8.1 and the unscoped behaviour was reintroduced in 8.9.1.
