Exploitation Conditions

Requires (1) a Redash instance on 26.0.0 through pre-26.9.0 where an administrator has configured a DuckDB data source, and (2) an authenticated account that has been granted query access to that specific data source (PR:L). The flaw is that the DuckDB connection was opened with enable_external_access at its default true, so DuckDB's file-reading functions and COPY TO are available to any query user. Limiting factors: exploitation is not possible without an existing DuckDB source and a query-capable account, and only files readable/writable by the Redash OS process are exposed; instances not using the DuckDB query runner are unaffected.

Impact

This is a genuine high-priority issue rather than a CVSS-inflated one. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score of 9.3 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) with high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact on both the vulnerable and subsequent systems (VC/VI/VA:H, SC/SI:H) is well-supported by the mechanism: a low-privileged but authenticated Redash user with query access to an administrator-created DuckDB data source can read or write arbitrary files as the Redash process, and crucially can read REDASH_COOKIE_SECRET / REDASH_SECRET_KEY to forge sessions and bypass authentication entirely - escalating from a limited query user to full application compromise. The key mitigating signal is PR:L: this is not remote-unauthenticated; the attacker must already hold a valid account with access to a configured DuckDB source. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or automated weaponization at this time; the exploit code evidence is the fix-side commit, not an offensive POC. SSVC-style read: exploitation is 'none observed' per available data, technical impact is 'total', automatable is uncertain but low because an admin-configured DuckDB source and a query-capable account are both required. Net: prioritize patching for any deployment that uses the DuckDB query runner, but widespread opportunistic exploitation is unlikely given the preconditions.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated Redash user who has been granted query access to a DuckDB data source submits a query using DuckDB's native file functions (e.g. read_text) to read /opt/redash's environment or config files, extracting REDASH_COOKIE_SECRET. They then forge a signed session cookie to impersonate an administrator, achieving authentication bypass. No weaponized public POC was provided; the only published exploit-relevant code is the vendor's fix commit.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Authenticated users with query access to an administrator-configured DuckDB data source on Redash 26.0.0 through versions before 26.9.0 can read and write files on the Redash server with the privileges of the Redash process, because the DuckDB query runner opened connections with enable_external_access left at its default value of true. The practical impact escalates beyond data exposure: reading application secrets such as REDASH_COOKIE_SECRET or REDASH_SECRET_KEY allows forged session cookies and a full authentication bypass, which is why the issue carries a 9.3 CVSS 4.0 base score under a CWE-284 improper access control root cause. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and exploitation is not possible without both an existing administrator-created DuckDB data source and a query-capable account (authenticated, low privileges per the CVSS PR:L metric), so instances that do not use the DuckDB query runner are unaffected.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 26.9.0 - upgrade Redash to v26.9.0 (release notes: https://github.com/getredash/redash/releases/tag/v26.9.0), which includes the fix commit 7387072af40913a64e7b3be470491792f2d5551c that disables DuckDB's LocalFileSystem driver in _connect() and locks the configuration so a query cannot re-enable it. If immediate upgrade is not possible, remove or disable any administrator-created DuckDB data sources, or revoke query-level group access to that specific data source; the trade-off is loss of DuckDB-based analytics while all other data source types continue to function. Because files readable by the Redash process include the application secrets, rotate REDASH_COOKIE_SECRET and REDASH_SECRET_KEY if any untrusted user had query access to a DuckDB source, accepting that rotation invalidates all active sessions and any derived signed tokens. Harden the runtime by running the Redash worker/web processes under a dedicated least-privileged OS account and by unmounting or restricting access to configuration, cloud credential, and .env files that the process does not require; this may break legitimate data sources that reference local paths. Finally, note that enable_external_access also governs network-extension behaviour, so restricting outbound egress from Redash hosts reduces the blast radius - at the cost of blocking legitimate remote-extension or remote-file data source use.

Technical ContextAI · show details

DuckDB is an embedded analytical database engine used by Redash's duckdb query runner to execute user-supplied SQL against a local database file. In DuckDB, the enable_external_access setting defaults to true, which permits the engine to reach outside its database file through native file-reading functions (for example read_text and read_csv) and through COPY ... TO for writes, all executing with the permissions of the host process. Redash's redash/query_runner/duckdb.py _connect() path constructed the connection without overriding that default, so any SQL submitted through the data source could address the underlying operating system filesystem - a textbook CWE-284 improper access control failure where an authorization boundary between query execution and host filesystem access was never established. The upstream fix (commit 7387072af40913a64e7b3be470491792f2d5551c) adds an external_access configuration option and, in _connect(), executes SET disabled_filesystems = 'LocalFileSystem' followed by SET lock_configuration = true; accompanying unit tests verify that read_text and COPY TO now fail with 'LocalFileSystem has been disabled' and that a subsequent SET disabled_filesystems = '' from a query is rejected because the configuration has been locked. The independent assessment (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) treats scope as changed because successful exploitation escapes the Redash application boundary and affects the host and other tenants of its secrets; it is not CVSS-inflated.

DescriptionCVE.org

Redash is a package for data visualization and sharing. From 26.0.0 until 26.9.0, the DuckDB query runner's _connect() path in redash/query_runner/duckdb.py created connections with enable_external_access left at its default value of true. A user with query access to an administrator-created DuckDB data source could use native file-reading functions to retrieve files readable by the Redash process or use COPY TO to write files with that process's privileges. Reading application secrets such as REDASH_COOKIE_SECRET or REDASH_SECRET_KEY could also enable forged sessions and authentication bypass. This issue is fixed in version 26.9.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Redash versions 26.0.0 through before 26.9.0, when configured with an administrator-created DuckDB data source, allow authenticated low-privilege users with query access to read and write files on the Redash server and extract application secrets, enabling forged session cookies and a full authentication bypass. This exposes organizations using the affected Redash analytics platform to complete takeover of the instance, which could grant unauthorized access to all connected data sources, dashboards, and sensitive business intelligence. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but leadership should prioritize remediation because any query-capable user can exploit the flaw without public exploit code, undermining the integrity of the entire analytics environment.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: remove or disable all DuckDB data sources if not essential; if required, restrict query access to the absolute minimum trusted accounts and enforce least privilege; set enable_external_access=false in DuckDB connection configuration if supported without breaking functionality; rotate REDASH_COOKIE_SECRET and REDASH_SECRET_KEY and invalidate all sessions; apply strict network segmentation and file system permissions to limit file read/write; enable detailed logging and monitor for unauthorized file access or secret exfiltration; and monitor vendor advisories for an official patch.
