| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the MCP Atlassian server (sooperset/mcp-atlassian, versions prior to 0.22.0) be deployed with administrator-configured allowlists set via JIRA_PROJECTS_FILTER and/or CONFLUENCE_SPACES_FILTER, AND that the shared/operator Atlassian credential the server uses can access projects or spaces BEYOND that allowlist. The attacker must already be an authorized MCP caller (PR:L) able to invoke jira_search/confluence_search and supply projects_filter/spaces_filter arguments or explicit project/space clauses; the pre-fix code let those caller arguments REPLACE the config allowlist and let a caller-supplied space clause suppress the restriction. Limiting factors: the attack yields nothing if the operator credential is already scoped to exactly the allowlisted projects/spaces (no broader access to reach), and it grants read-only exposure with no write or availability impact. Not exploitable by fully unauthenticated network attackers. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded authorization-boundary flaw, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk artifact - yet also not an emergency. The vendor CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N = 6.5 MEDIUM) is internally consistent with the description: PR:L correctly reflects that the attacker must already be a permitted MCP caller, and the confidentiality-only impact (C:H, I:N, A:N) matches a search-filter bypass that reads data but does not modify it. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV entry, and no public POC are present in the provided data, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The realistic risk is gated by two conditions the CVSS score cannot express: the deployment must use a shared/operator Atlassian credential whose access is BROADER than the configured allowlist, and the attacker must already be an authorized caller of the MCP server. The one data-quality conflict worth flagging: the input Tags label this 'Authentication Bypass,' but the CWE (CWE-284), the description ('search outside the intended boundary'), and the CVSS PR:L all indicate an AUTHORIZATION/allowlist-enforcement bypass by an already-authenticated caller - not an authentication bypass. Bottom line: prioritize for environments running MCP Atlassian with over-privileged shared credentials, but treat as routine patching elsewhere. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | In a shared-credential MCP Atlassian deployment where the operator configured JIRA_PROJECTS_FILTER/CONFLUENCE_SPACES_FILTER to restrict callers to a subset of projects, an authorized-but-limited caller invokes jira_search or confluence_search and passes its own projects_filter/spaces_filter argument (or embeds an explicit project/space clause) that replaces or suppresses the administrator's allowlist. Because the underlying Atlassian credential can reach additional projects and spaces, the caller retrieves issues and pages outside its intended boundary. No public exploit code is identified, but the technique requires only a crafted tool argument, consistent with the AC:L rating. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026
Authorization-boundary bypass in MCP Atlassian (sooperset/mcp-atlassian) versions prior to 0.22.0 lets an authorized MCP caller search Jira projects and Confluence spaces that fall outside the administrator-configured allowlist, by supplying caller-controlled projects_filter/spaces_filter arguments that replace the operator's restriction or by embedding an explicit project/space clause that suppresses it. Rated CVSS 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N), exploitation requires an already-authorized MCP caller plus a shared Atlassian credential whose access extends beyond the allowlist; the result is read-only information exposure with no integrity or availability impact. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV); vendor-released patch: 0.22.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to MCP Atlassian 0.22.0, the vendor-released patch (release notes at https://github.com/sooperset/mcp-atlassian/releases/tag/v0.22.0; fix commit b041733473f95119dd539542a43c280737a8e460 via PR https://github.com/sooperset/mcp-atlassian/pull/1448, advisory https://github.com/sooperset/mcp-atlassian/security/advisories/GHSA-rqwg-9346-fjjv), which makes the configured JIRA_PROJECTS_FILTER and CONFLUENCE_SPACES_FILTER a hard boundary that caller arguments can only narrow. Where upgrading is delayed, the most effective compensating control is to scope the server's Atlassian credential itself to exactly the allowlisted projects and spaces - use a dedicated service account with project/space permissions limited to that set rather than a broadly privileged operator token; the trade-off is that any legitimate need for wider content becomes a credential change instead of a configuration change. Secondarily, restrict which MCP clients and users may invoke the jira_search and confluence_search tools, since the flaw only benefits a caller who is already authorized to reach the server (PR:L) - this reduces exposure but degrades functionality for legitimate users and does not fix the underlying boundary logic. Do not rely on the pre-0.22.0 allowlist environment variables as a security control on their own, because caller-supplied projects_filter/spaces_filter values and inline project/space clauses could replace or suppress them. If the Confluence search path is reachable, also review the SSRF and attachment-path hardening shipped in the same release, as those areas received fixes alongside this bypass.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MCP Atlassian is a Model Context Protocol server that brokers Atlassian Confluence and Jira API access for AI/MCP clients, and operators are expected to constrain which content those clients may reach using the configuration controls JIRA_PROJECTS_FILTER and CONFLUENCE_SPACES_FILTER. The defect is an improper access-control / authorization-boundary flaw (CWE-284): the tool arguments projects_filter and spaces_filter, plus raw project or space clauses embedded in a caller-supplied query, were treated as overrides of the configured allowlist rather than as additional narrowing constraints. Concretely, the pre-fix SearchMixin.search path selected the effective filter as the caller value when present, falling back to config only if absent, and it appended the configured space restriction only when the incoming query did not already contain a 'space = ' token - so a caller could both substitute the allowlist and neutralize it with a crafted clause. The fix, reflected in the upstream search module and released as 0.22.0, always ANDs the configuration allowlist into the query via a dedicated helper and then additionally ANDs any caller-supplied filter (handling trailing ORDER BY clauses so the generated CQL stays valid), making config a hard boundary that caller input can only narrow. The same pull request bundles adjacent hardening for the same server family - SSRF redirect validation and DNS pinning on the Confluence HTTP session, workspace confinement of caller-supplied attachment upload paths, and refusal to download attachments into the working-directory root - which are separate hardening changes and not the allowlist bypass itself.

1DescriptionCVE.org
MCP Atlassian is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Atlassian products (Confluence and Jira). Prior to 0.22.0, caller-supplied projects_filter and spaces_filter arguments can replace administrator-configured allowlists, and caller-provided project or space clauses can suppress the configured restriction. A caller can search projects or spaces outside the intended boundary when the configured Atlassian credentials can access them. The advisory traces the vulnerable input and processing flow through JIRA_PROJECTS_FILTER, CONFLUENCE_SPACES_FILTER, projects_filter, spaces_filter, SearchMixin.search_issues, and SearchMixin.search, which identify the affected entry points, controls, and code paths. This issue is fixed in version 0.22.0.
