DescriptionCVE.org

phpMyFAQ before 4.1.7 fails to properly enforce CONFIGURATION_EDIT permission on admin API read endpoints for LDAP, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, and dashboard configuration, allowing any authenticated user to access sensitive administrative data. Attackers can retrieve LDAP server topology, bind account names, search bases, index statistics, and site analytics by calling these endpoints with a valid session.

AnalysisAI

Broken access control in phpMyFAQ before 4.1.7 exposes sensitive infrastructure configuration to any authenticated user, regardless of permission level. Admin API read endpoints for LDAP, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, and dashboard configuration fail to enforce the CONFIGURATION_EDIT permission check, meaning a low-privileged account holder can retrieve LDAP server topology, bind account names, search bases, index statistics, and site analytics. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Obtain any valid phpMyFAQ account
Delivery
Authenticate and acquire a valid session token
Exploit
Issue direct HTTP request to admin API config endpoints (LDAP/Elasticsearch/OpenSearch)
Execution

Persist
Extract LDAP bind accounts and server topology
Impact
Use intelligence for downstream directory or infrastructure attacks

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires a valid authenticated session in phpMyFAQ - any account, including the lowest-privileged registered user, is sufficient. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 4.0 score of 5.3 (Medium) accurately reflects a limited-confidentiality, no-integrity, no-availability flaw. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker who has obtained any valid phpMyFAQ account - through registration, credential stuffing, or social engineering - authenticates to the application and directly calls the admin API LDAP configuration read endpoint using their session token. Without triggering any permission error, the response returns the LDAP server address, bind DN, and search base configuration, which the attacker uses to map the organization's directory infrastructure for a subsequent targeted attack.
Remediation Upgrade to phpMyFAQ 4.1.7 or later, which is the vendor-confirmed fixed release per the GitHub security advisory GHSA-7gh7-qh7c-9r8m (https://github.com/thorsten/phpMyFAQ/security/advisories/GHSA-7gh7-qh7c-9r8m). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
