| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated account with Contributor-level privileges or higher (PR:L) on a site where WP Inventory Manager ≤2.5.5 is installed and active. The concrete trigger named in the description is the 'sort_order' attribute of the [wpinventory_categories] shortcode, placed in a draft post and rendered via post preview - exploitation does NOT require the post to be published or approved, which lowers the barrier on multi-author/membership sites. Limiting factors: the attacker must already authenticate at contributor level (not anonymous), exploitation on single-author sites is impractical without an account, and because the injection is time-based/blind, data extraction is slow and noisy rather than instantaneous bulk dumping. Impact is confined to reading database contents; no write/integrity or availability impact is indicated. |
| Impact | This is a moderate, authentication-gated risk rather than a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, base 6.5) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity attack that nonetheless requires authenticated access at contributor level (PR:L) and yields confidentiality-only impact (C:H, I:N, A:N) - consistent with a blind/time-based SQL injection used to read data, not to alter it or take down the site. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now or emergency), which aligns with the authentication requirement and the absence of stronger urgency signals. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no PoC/exploit reference are present in the supplied data, so exploitation is not confirmed to be probable or occurring. The one point to verify is the privilege boundary: the vuln is reachable by a Contributor via the draft-preview path without publishing, which lowers the practical bar for any site that grants contributor accounts (e.g., multi-author blogs, membership sites) - on such sites the PR:L requirement is weak, whereas on single-author sites it is a strong limiter. No key signals conflict here; the main gap is missing EPSS/KEV/PoC data, meaning likelihood of real-world exploitation cannot be quantified from the input. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds (or registers for) a Contributor account on a WordPress site running WP Inventory Manager ≤2.5.5 creates a draft post containing the [wpinventory_categories] shortcode with a malicious 'sort_order' attribute carrying time-based SQL payloads. Rendering the draft through the post preview triggers the injected query - no publication or admin approval needed - letting the attacker infer database contents (e.g., user hashes, secrets) byte-by-byte through response-timing differences. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the technique is straightforward given the documented trigger. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Time-based blind SQL injection in the WordPress plugin WP Inventory Manager through version 2.5.5 lets an authenticated Contributor-or-higher user append arbitrary SQL to the plugin's category query through the 'sort_order' attribute of the [wpinventory_categories] shortcode. Because the shortcode is rendered in post preview, the injected payload executes from a draft post without publication or editorial approval, making it reachable on multi-author and membership sites. The result is database read access - including user credentials and other sensitive tables - though extraction is slow and noisy due to the blind timing channel; no public exploit code is identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV, with a vendor changeset referenced in the advisory record.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - the advisory references the plugin's WordPress.org changeset 3712512 (https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?reponame=&old=3712512%40wp-inventory-manager&new=3712512%40wp-inventory-manager), so check the plugin's WordPress.org page for a release above 2.5.5 and update to that version once available. Until then, the practical compensating controls are account-centric: audit and reduce who holds Contributor or higher on sites running the plugin (removing unnecessary author accounts removes the prerequisite), and where a membership or multi-author workflow cannot be trimmed, restrict or disable post-preview rendering for untrusted low-privilege roles - noting this degrades editorial workflow for legitimate contributors. Renaming or removing the [wpinventory_categories] shortcode usage, or deactivating the plugin entirely, eliminates the vulnerable 'sort_order' code path at the cost of losing inventory category display functionality. The Wordfence advisory and EUVD entry should be monitored for confirmation of a fixed release version.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a classic CWE-89 SQL injection rooted in the WordPress plugin ecosystem: the plugin's shortcode handler (wpinventory.shortcodes.class.php) passes the user-supplied 'sort_order' attribute into a query built in wpinventory.category.class.php without adequate escaping or use of $wpdb->prepare(), so attacker-controlled text becomes part of the ORDER BY clause. Since ORDER BY does not return query output directly, the injection is exploited as a time-based blind oracle, driving delays to infer data one bit at a time. The vulnerable code paths are visible in WordPress.org plugin Trac for tags 2.5.0 and 2.5.1, and a changeset (3712512) is referenced, indicating an upstream fix was committed. The CPE (chuck1982:wp_inventory_manager, all versions) and ENISA EUVD-2026-111614 both scope the issue to releases from 0 through 2.5.5. CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N reflects a network-reachable, low-privilege attack with no user interaction, high confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
The WP Inventory Manager plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to time-based SQL Injection via 'sort_order' Shortcode Attribute in all versions up to, and including, 2.5.5 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. This can be exploited by a Contributor via the [wpinventory_categories] shortcode embedded in a draft post rendered through preview, without requiring the post to be published.
