1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires ALL of the following: (1) the WP User Frontend plugin installed at a version before 4.3.12; (2) a registration page configured/published via the plugin (public self-registration enabled); and (3) the site running on a PHP build where the libsodium (sodium) extension is UNAVAILABLE - the missing sodium extension is what allows the role value to be tampered with. Limiting factors that reduce realistic risk: sodium ships enabled by default in PHP 7.2+, so most modern hosts are not vulnerable (this drives the CVSS AC:H); the administrator role explicitly cannot be obtained, capping escalation at Editor; and the site must have registration deliberately enabled. No user interaction or prior authentication is needed (PR:N/UI:N) once those environmental preconditions hold.

Impact

This is a genuine, high-impact broken-privilege-assignment flaw, but real-world exploitability is constrained by an unusual environmental precondition. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N, 7.4) correctly captures the core danger: an unauthenticated network attacker can escalate to a privileged WordPress role (up to Editor) with no user interaction, yielding total confidentiality and integrity impact on site content - consistent with SSVC 'Technical Impact: total'. However, AC:H is well-justified because exploitation only works on a PHP build where the libsodium extension is unavailable AND a registration page has been configured, so the flaw does NOT affect the majority of modern, default PHP deployments (sodium is bundled and enabled by default in PHP 7.2+). All exploitation signals point away from urgent widespread abuse: EPSS was not provided, KEV=NO, POC=NO, and SSVC 'Exploitation: none' / 'Automatable: no'. The net picture is a real, patch-worthy privilege-escalation issue whose realistic risk is materially lower than the 7.4 base score implies for typical installs, because the vulnerable code path requires a non-default PHP runtime condition. Note the administrator role explicitly cannot be obtained, capping worst-case impact below full site takeover.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a WordPress site running the WP User Frontend plugin (before 4.3.12) with a public registration page configured, and hosted on a PHP build lacking the sodium extension, an unauthenticated attacker submits the registration form while tampering with the hidden/serialized role field to request a privileged role such as Editor. The server accepts the tampered value and provisions the account with elevated privileges, giving the attacker content-management access to the site. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and administrator escalation is not possible via this vector.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026

Privilege escalation in the WP User Frontend WordPress plugin before 4.3.12 lets unauthenticated visitors tamper with the role value submitted by the plugin's front-end registration form and create an account with elevated privileges such as Editor (the administrator role cannot be obtained this way). The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) confirms unauthenticated remote exploitation with no user interaction, but the AC:H reflects a narrow environmental precondition: the site must run on a PHP build where the sodium (libsodium) extension is unavailable, and a public registration page must be configured through the plugin. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the SSVC assessment records Exploitation: none; impact is scored High for confidentiality and integrity with no availability effect.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 4.3.12 - update the WP User Frontend plugin to 4.3.12 or later as the primary fix, and verify the installed version after upgrading. If the update cannot be applied immediately, the most effective compensating control is to unpublish or remove the plugin's front-end registration page (or disable public self-registration entirely) until the upgrade is performed; the trade-off is loss of self-service sign-up, which is why this is a temporary measure. Ensuring the PHP runtime has the sodium (libsodium) extension enabled also removes the vulnerable precondition, since the integrity mechanism depends on it - note that this requires control over the PHP build/php.ini and a service restart, and is not a substitute for patching. Review existing user accounts for unexpected Editor-level or otherwise elevated roles created via the registration form as a detection and cleanup step. Additional guidance is available in the WPScan advisory at https://wpscan.com/vulnerability/4a385690-3471-4604-aa2a-e120bb31ca53/ and the ENISA EUVD entry EUVD-2026-89639.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management): the plugin's registration workflow relies on client-supplied role data that is meant to be protected against tampering, but the integrity mechanism is not enforced when PHP's sodium extension is missing. WP User Frontend is a WordPress plugin that exposes front-end forms - including user registration - to anonymous visitors; the site's configured role for new sign-ups is expected to be applied server-side, yet under the vulnerable configuration a registrant can substitute a more privileged role (up to Editor). The environmental dependency on libsodium is the key technical detail: sodium ships enabled by default in PHP 7.2 and later, so a host must be running a PHP build where the extension is absent or disabled for the condition to be met. EUVD records the affected version range as User Frontend 3.5.29 through anything below 4.3.12. The tags PHP, WordPress and Privilege Escalation align with this analysis, and the scope is Unchanged (S:U), meaning the escalation stays within the WordPress user/permission model rather than crossing an authorization boundary. Exploitation assumes a public self-registration page is deliberately enabled, which is not the default state of every installation.

DescriptionCVE.org

The User Frontend WordPress plugin before 4.3.12 does not prevent tampering with the role assigned by its registration form, allowing unauthenticated users to register with a higher privileged role, such as Editor.

This affects installations running a PHP build where the sodium extension is unavailable, and where a registration page has been configured. The administrator role cannot be obtained this way.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

WordPress sites running the WP User Frontend plugin below version 4.3.12 with a public registration page enabled can be manipulated by an unauthenticated outsider to create accounts holding Editor-level privileges, giving them the ability to publish, alter, and delete site content. Although exploitation requires the site's PHP environment to lack the sodium extension, the affected population includes any externally reachable publishing, marketing, or commerce site using this plugin, so leadership should treat content integrity and brand trust as the primary exposure. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, so this is a patch-now hygiene issue rather than an active incident.
