| Exploitation Conditions | No special deployment configuration is required beyond having the Themify Builder plugin active and at least one page rendered by it publicly accessible. The plugin automatically injects the nonce into every frontend page it renders, so any unauthenticated visitor to any builder-rendered page acquires a usable token. Limiting factors: the write primitive is restricted to CSS layout properties (padding/margin) only - this cannot be leveraged for code execution, option injection, or stored XSS via this specific handler. Exploitation is also bounded to post IDs that exist on the site; draft and private post IDs must be guessed or enumerated, adding minor friction but not a meaningful barrier given sequential WordPress IDs. There is no per-post ownership check in the handler, so any existing post is a valid target. Authentication is confirmed not required per CVSS PR:N. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, score 5.3) accurately reflects the attack surface: zero authentication, zero complexity, fully network-accessible. However, the real-world impact ceiling is constrained - the only writable data is CSS layout properties (padding/margin) on posts, which does not enable code execution, credential theft, or content injection. The practical blast radius is visual defacement of page layouts, including private and draft posts whose IDs can be guessed or enumerated. EPSS data was not provided; given the mass-market WordPress attack ecosystem, exploitation probability is non-trivial once details are public. No CISA KEV listing means active exploitation is not yet confirmed. No POC code was referenced. The effective risk tier is moderate: high exploitability offset by low-impact, non-destructive write primitives. Security teams with Themify Builder deployments should prioritize the patch but need not treat this as a critical incident-response scenario unless post content tampering carries compliance implications for their specific deployment. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker visits any public page of a Themify Builder-powered WordPress site, retrieves the valid nonce from the page's JavaScript source (injected by wp_localize_script), and submits an AJAX POST request to admin-ajax.php with an attacker-chosen post ID and a crafted JSON payload setting arbitrary padding/margin values. Because private and draft posts are not excluded by the handler, an attacker can also target unpublished content if they can guess or enumerate post IDs - a low-effort task given WordPress's sequential integer post IDs. No exploit code is publicly referenced, but the attack requires only a browser and basic HTTP tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 22, 2026
Unauthenticated styling data manipulation in the Themify Builder WordPress plugin (all versions through 7.8.0) allows any visitor to overwrite padding and margin properties on arbitrary posts, including private and draft content. The root cause is CWE-862 (missing authorization): the AJAX handler performing style writes relies solely on a WordPress nonce for access control, but that nonce is automatically broadcast to every frontend page via wp_localize_script, making it freely retrievable by any anonymous visitor. The CVSS score of 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) is consistent with trivial unauthenticated network exploitation. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis, but the low exploitation complexity makes opportunistic abuse realistic.
RemediationAI
The WordPress Plugin Trac changeset at https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?reponame=&old=3653841%40themify-builder&new=3653841%40themify-builder indicates an upstream fix has been committed; however, a specific patched release version is not confirmed in the available data - verify the latest plugin version in the WordPress.org repository and update to any release beyond 7.8.0 that incorporates this changeset. As a compensating control while awaiting a confirmed patch, site administrators can temporarily disable the AJAX endpoint responsible for style writes by deactivating the Themify Builder plugin on sensitive WordPress installations, accepting the trade-off of losing front-end editing functionality. Network-layer WAF rules blocking unauthenticated POST requests to wp-admin/admin-ajax.php with Themify-specific action parameters can limit exploitation surface without fully disabling the plugin, though this requires knowledge of the specific AJAX action names and may be bypassed. Enforcing capability checks (current_user_can) in the AJAX handler is the correct permanent fix and should be confirmed in release notes for any version claimed to resolve this issue.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The Themify Builder plugin (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:themifyme:themify_builder:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is a WordPress page-builder plugin that stores layout styling - specifically padding and margin values - as post meta or serialized JSON. The vulnerable AJAX handler, examined at class-themify-builder.php lines 227, 518, and 693 and class-themify-builder-stylesheet.php line 69, accepts an attacker-supplied post ID and a JSON styling payload without checking WordPress capability checks (e.g., current_user_can('edit_post', $post_id)). The only guard is a nonce verification, but WordPress nonces generated via wp_localize_script are embedded in page HTML for all authenticated and unauthenticated visitors alike, making them publicly readable from any page rendered by the builder. CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) precisely describes the flaw: authentication of the request identity (the nonce proves request origin, not user capability) is conflated with authorization of the requested action.

DescriptionCVE.org
The Themify Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 7.8.0. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to modify the stored Themify Builder styling data (padding and margin properties) of arbitrary posts, including private and draft posts, by supplying an attacker-controlled post ID and JSON styling payload. The nonce required by the handler is automatically emitted to all frontend pages rendered by the builder via wp_localize_script, meaning any unauthenticated visitor can trivially retrieve a valid nonce from page source and satisfy the only access control in place.
