Craft CMS versions before 5.10.8 contain an authentication bypass vulnerability in the elements/save action that allows authenticated users to change passwords without verification. Attackers with edit users permission can reset any user's password including administrators by exploiting the unprotected newPassword field in the User element save flow.
AnalysisAI
Improper authorization in Craft CMS 5.0.0-RC1 through 5.10.7 exposes the generic elements/save action to silent password manipulation, enabling any authenticated control panel user to reset their own password without confirming their current credentials. More critically, attackers holding the edit users permission can silently overwrite passwords for any account on the platform-including administrator accounts-achieving full administrative takeover without requiring the legitimately guarded Administrate users privilege. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires an active, authenticated session with access to the Craft CMS control panel. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 base score of 7.1 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) correctly reflects that this is network-exploitable with low complexity by any authenticated user, but the provided vector's omission of integrity impact (VI:N) appears inconsistent with the actual harm-password replacement is a direct integrity violation of user credentials. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | An attacker with a low-privileged Craft CMS control panel account that holds the `edit users` permission identifies a target administrator's User element ID through the CMS interface, then crafts a POST request directly to the `elements/save` action including a `newPassword` parameter alongside the admin's element ID. Because the `UserPasswordValidator` does not scope mass assignment of `newPassword` to the appropriate authentication scenario, the administrator's password is silently overwritten with no elevated session check or current-password verification. … |
| Remediation | Upgrade the craftcms/cms Composer package to version 5.10.8 or later by running `composer update craftcms/cms`; this is the vendor-released patch addressing the issue via commit cbdf45fbd3ab548b147d7de375f6f6f580b7c294, as documented in GHSA-p8x7-9vfw-p7vc. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
