CRITICAL 9.8

DescriptionCVE.org

An unrestricted file upload vulnerability in dulldusk/phpfm through 1.8.0 allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary PHP code on the server. The application ships with an empty upload extension filter ($upload_ext_filter = array()) and no authentication enabled by default (auth_pass is empty string), allowing an unauthenticated attacker to upload a PHP webshell and execute it by browsing to the uploaded path.

AnalysisAI

Remote code execution in dulldusk phpfm through 1.8.0 lets an unauthenticated attacker upload a malicious PHP file and run it directly on the server. The application ships insecure-by-default: its upload extension allowlist is empty ($upload_ext_filter = array()) and authentication is off (auth_pass is an empty string), so no credentials or configuration changes are needed to reach the vulnerable upload handler. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires that the phpfm instance be reachable over the network and that the upload feature be accessible - which it is by default because auth_pass ships as an empty string (no authentication) and $upload_ext_filter ships as an empty array (no extension restriction), and the upload directory sits under a PHP-executing document root. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 9.8) aligns cleanly with the description: network-reachable, low-complexity, no privileges, no user interaction, full CIA loss - this is a genuine unauthenticated RCE rather than an inflated high-CVSS-low-real-risk case. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An attacker scanning for exposed phpfm instances reaches the default, passwordless interface, uses the file-upload feature to upload shell.php containing a PHP webshell, then browses to the uploaded path to execute it and gain command execution as the web server user. Because AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, this requires only network reachability and no credentials or victim interaction; no public POC was provided, but the technique is standard webshell delivery.
Remediation No vendor-released patch version was identified at time of analysis, and the supplied references point only to the upstream repository (https://github.com/dulldusk/phpfm and its index.php) rather than a tagged fixed release. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours: inventory all dulldusk phpfm 1.8.0 and earlier deployments across your infrastructure and assess network exposure; immediately restrict network access to any exposed instances and consider taking non-critical instances offline until patched. …
