MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the ability to submit/store a component title through the administrative 'Theme to Components' functionality in admin/components.php; the malicious title is stored, then on output HTML-entity-decoded and printed inside a double-quoted HTML attribute without re-encoding, allowing attribute-breakout and script execution. Triggering requires an administrator (or admin-panel user) to subsequently render the affected admin page in their authenticated browser session - so a victim with admin-panel access must view the stored value. Limiting factors: the injection point is an admin feature (requiring at least some authenticated access to write the payload, despite the input vector's PR:N), execution is confined to the admin UI browser context rather than the server, and no official patch exists so mitigation relies on access restriction and input/output sanitization. |
| Impact | Signals are moderate and somewhat conflicting. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector scores 8.7 (High) driven entirely by VI:H with AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, implying remote, unauthenticated, no-interaction exploitation. However, the vulnerability lives in an administrative feature (admin/components.php, 'Theme to Components'), which realistically means an actor must be able to reach and write to that admin function to plant the stored payload, and an administrator must subsequently view it - so the PR:N/UI:N in the input vector likely overstates true exposure and should be verified against GetSimple CMS-CE's role/auth model. No EPSS score is provided. SSVC reports Exploitation=poc (so proof-of-concept exists), Automatable=no, and Technical Impact=partial, which is consistent with a stored XSS that compromises the admin UI session rather than the host directly. It is NOT CISA KEV listed and there is no evidence of active exploitation. Net: this is a genuine stored-XSS weakness in the admin plane worth patching, but the raw 8.7/PR:N framing over-weights it versus the operational reality that it is an admin-context XSS requiring write access to an admin feature and no patch currently exists, so compensating controls are needed in the interim. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user with access to the 'Theme to Components' admin function submits a component whose title contains a crafted JavaScript payload; because the stored title is HTML-entity-decoded and echoed into a double-quoted HTML attribute without re-encoding, the script becomes persistent. When an administrator later opens the affected admin page, the payload executes in their authenticated session, enabling actions such as session/cookie theft, CSRF-token exfiltration, or creation of a rogue admin account. Proof-of-concept exploitation is indicated by the SSVC 'poc' status, though no weaponized or in-the-wild use is confirmed. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in GetSimple CMS CE 3.3.22 and earlier allows an authenticated attacker to inject persistent JavaScript that executes in an administrator's browser session when the affected admin page renders. The flaw resides in the 'Theme to Components' feature (admin/components.php), where a component title is HTML-entity-decoded and then printed inside a double-quoted HTML attribute without re-encoding, enabling attribute breakout. Publicly available exploit code exists (SSVC exploitation: poc), and no vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis; the independent assessment rates the issue as requiring low privileges (PR:L) and user interaction (UI:R), with scope change and low confidentiality/integrity impact.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to the administrative interface, especially admin/components.php and the 'Theme to Components' feature, to trusted users only; disabling the feature if it is not needed removes the attack surface but reduces CMS functionality. Ensure that any component title is stored and later output with context-aware encoding - specifically, apply htmlspecialchars($title, ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8') (or equivalent) without prior HTML entity decoding when placing the value inside a double-quoted attribute. A web application firewall can block attribute-breaking payloads as a temporary measure, though it may produce false positives and does not fix the root cause. Monitor component titles for suspicious characters such as quotes, angle brackets, or event handlers. Refer to the vendor advisory at https://github.com/GetSimpleCMS-CE/GetSimpleCMS-CE/security/advisories/GHSA-vqfh-838q-xfqh for updates.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a stored (persistent) cross-site scripting issue (CWE-79) in the PHP-based GetSimple CMS CE, specifically in the admin/components.php script that handles the 'Theme to Components' functionality. The component title parameter is stored and later rendered without proper context-aware output encoding: the output path applies HTML entity decoding before echoing the value inside a double-quoted HTML attribute, so an attacker-supplied title containing entity-encoded quotes can break out of the attribute and inject arbitrary JavaScript. The CPE string cpe:2.3:a:getsimplecms-ce:getsimplecms-ce:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates that all versions of the product are in scope for CPE matching, while the vendor advisory and EUVD specify versions 3.3.22 and prior as affected. Execution is confined to the admin UI browser context, not the server, and requires a victim with admin-panel access to view the stored value.

DescriptionCVE.org
GetSimple CMS is a content management system (CMS), and GetSimple CMS CE is the community edition of that CMS. In versions 3.3.22 and prior, GetSimpleCMS-CE is vulnerable to stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) in the "Theme to Components" functionality (admin/components.php) via the title parameter. The stored title is rendered inside a double-quoted HTML attribute in the administrative interface through an output path that HTML-entity-decodes the value before printing it, without re-encoding for the attribute context. This allows persistent execution of arbitrary JavaScript in the admin panel. At time of publication, there are no publicly available patches.

Executive ViewAI
GetSimple CMS CE 3.3.22 and earlier contains a stored cross-site scripting flaw that can let a low-privileged authenticated user run attacker-controlled scripts in an administrator's browser, potentially compromising admin sessions or enabling unauthorized administrative actions. Publicly available exploit code exists and no vendor-released patch has been identified, so organizations using the affected CMS should treat this as a high-priority risk pending mitigation. Leadership should care because compromise of CMS administrators can undermine site integrity, content trust, and related business services, even if the direct technical impact is limited to confidentiality and integrity of the admin session.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim mitigations include restricting admin/components.php and Theme to Components access to trusted networks or VPN, limiting component-edit privileges to essential administrators, reviewing and sanitizing existing component titles, deploying WAF or virtual patching rules for attribute-breakout payloads, enabling additional authentication controls where supported, and monitoring admin logs for exploitation.
