Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated administrator (PR:H) to first store a crafted branding.footerHtml value through the Admin Panel; only then does the unauthenticated public site configuration API return that raw HTML to clients. Exploitation is strongly LIMITED because the official FileRise frontend already sanitizes the footer via a tag allowlist (a, b, strong, em, i, span, small, br) with safe-link handling before rendering, so the bundled web client is not exploitable. Realistic impact is confined to alternate/third-party clients or future render paths that consume the public config API and render footerHtml without their own sanitization, and a victim must load such a client (UI:R). Affected deployments are FileRise versions prior to 3.21.0.

Impact

This is a defense-in-depth / low-priority issue rather than an urgent threat, despite being network-reachable. The provided CVSS:3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) scores 4.8 (Medium), and the high-privilege requirement (PR:H) is the dominant limiting factor: an administrator must first store the malicious branding.footerHtml value, so an attacker cannot act purely from the unauthenticated side despite the vulnerable endpoint being the unauthenticated public config API. Critically, the vendor advisory and description both state the FileRise frontend ALREADY sanitizes this value via a tag allowlist before rendering, so the standard web client is not exploitable - the fix (commit 613fdb2) adds server-side sanitization as a second layer primarily to protect alternate/custom API clients and future render paths. No EPSS score is provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified; there is no CISA KEV listing and no public POC, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The signals are internally consistent (low severity, high privilege, existing client-side mitigation all point the same way); the main caveat is that the CVSS vector encodes the raw stored-XSS primitive and does NOT account for the compensating frontend sanitization, so real-world risk is lower than even the 4.8 score suggests.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A malicious or compromised administrator saves active HTML/JavaScript into the FileRise footer branding field, which is then returned verbatim by the unauthenticated public site configuration API. A separate or custom client that consumes this API and renders the footer HTML without its own sanitization would execute the attacker's script in a viewer's browser. No public exploit code is identified, and the official FileRise web frontend is not affected because it sanitizes the value before rendering.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

FileRise versions prior to 3.21.0 return the administrator-configured branding.footerHtml value verbatim through the unauthenticated public site-configuration API, so raw admin-supplied HTML reaches any client that consumes that endpoint. Because the official FileRise frontend already sanitizes the footer with a tag allowlist (a, b, strong, em, i, span, small, br) and safe-link handling before rendering, the bundled web client is not exploitable; realistic impact is confined to alternate or third-party clients, or future render paths, that display footerHtml without their own sanitization. Exploitation requires an authenticated administrator (PR:H) to first store a crafted value and a victim to load an affected client (UI:R), which is why this is rated defense-in-depth / low priority rather than an urgent threat, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor patch by upgrading FileRise to version 3.21.0 or later, the release that introduces server-side sanitization of the public footer branding HTML (see https://github.com/error311/FileRise/releases/tag/v3.21.0 and the advisory https://github.com/error311/FileRise/security/advisories/GHSA-rmwm-wq9g-583g); the exact fixing change is commit 613fdb28ca25e6dcc9bdfa590757b53935fad8da. If an upgrade cannot be scheduled immediately, treat the output of the unauthenticated public site-configuration API as untrusted: block or strip the footerHtml field at any proxy, gateway, or client that consumes it, since the bundled FileRise frontend already sanitizes this value and will continue to render safely without the raw field. Restrict and audit administrative access so only trusted operators can set branding settings, and clear any existing branding.footerHtml value containing script, iframe, style, event-handler, or javascript: content. Deploy a strict Content-Security-Policy that disallows inline script on any custom or third-party FileRise front end, accepting that this may break legitimate inline assets until nonces or hashes are configured. Note the v3.21.0 upgrade side effects called out by the vendor: login methods intentionally disabled in the Admin Panel must be re-enabled before direct API use of those methods will work, reverse-proxy deployments should confirm trusted proxy/IP header settings so login throttling sees the real client IP, and footer branding will now be stripped of unsupported active or embedded HTML while preserving safe text, inline formatting, and safe links.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue is a CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation, i.e. stored cross-site scripting) defect in FileRise, a self-hosted PHP web file manager. FileRise's AdminModel exposes a curated public subset of the site configuration via an unauthenticated API, and prior to 3.21.0 the buildPublicSubset() method passed the branding.footerHtml value straight through as a raw string. The frontend had already been hardened with a client-side allowlist, but the server-side trust boundary was never enforced, leaving raw HTML in the API response. The upstream fix adds a sanitizeFooterHtml() routine that trims and length-caps the input at 2000 characters, strips control characters, parses the markup with DOMDocument, and recursively walks the node tree in sanitizeFooterNode(). Only a small allowlist of passive formatting tags survives; disallowed elements are replaced with their text content, all attributes are removed except a safe href and an allowed target on anchors, and anchors with target=_blank are given rel="noopener noreferrer". Input is also sanitized at write time in updateConfig(), so the stored value is cleaned in addition to the output path. PHP installations without DOMDocument fall back to strip_tags() plus whitespace normalization, which is strictly less expressive but still non-executable. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:error311:filerise:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that all released versions before 3.21.0 are in scope.

DescriptionCVE.org

FileRise is a self-hosted web-based file manager with multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations. Prior to 3.21.0, FileRise returns the stored branding.footerHtml value through the unauthenticated public site configuration API without server-side sanitization. The FileRise frontend already sanitizes this value before rendering it into the page, using an allowlist of simple footer tags and safe link handling. The unauthenticated public config API exposed raw admin-provided footer HTML to clients, which is still undesirable and could be unsafe for alternate clients or future render paths. An administrator must first store the malicious footer value. This issue is fixed in version 3.21.0.
