Grav API Plugin is a RESTful API for Grav CMS that provides full headless access to your site's content. Prior to 1.0.8, the Grav API plugin intercepts the apiKeyGenerate and apiKeyRevoke admin tasks in user/plugins/api/api.php and authorizes the caller with only admin.login. A basic panel user can select another account from the route, create a persistent ApiKeyManager credential bound to that target, and inherit the target's API permissions, including api.super or administrative write access when present. This issue is fixed in version 1.0.8.
AnalysisAI
Privilege escalation in the Grav API Plugin (prior to 1.0.8) allows any authenticated panel user to generate or revoke API keys on behalf of arbitrary accounts, including super-administrators, by exploiting an insufficient authorization check in the apiKeyGenerate and apiKeyRevoke admin task handlers. The plugin enforced only the baseline admin.login permission - held by every panel user - without verifying that the caller had rights over the target account specified in the route parameter, enabling a low-privilege user to mint persistent API credentials carrying the target's full permissions. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires a valid Grav panel account with admin.login permission - the minimum permission assigned to every authenticated panel user; no elevated role is needed. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) is well-calibrated: the attack is network-reachable, requires no special conditions, demands only a basic panel account, and carries high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact due to the inherited permissions. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade the Grav API Plugin to version 1.0.8, the first release containing the authorization fix; the release is available at https://github.com/getgrav/grav-plugin-api/releases/tag/1.0.8 and the fixing commit is ed16f0aaa9b398c6f179fb8f51e0fa53e4ed8a30. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours: Inventory all systems running Grav CMS with the API Plugin and identify which are running vulnerable versions prior to 1.0.8; audit panel user permissions to determine which low-privilege users have access to admin tasks. …
