MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Persistence The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated WordPress administrator (PR:H) able to reach the search functionality that feeds the 's' parameter into Query::parse_key_compare_field(); the payload must match the regex ^[(\s]*SELECT\s+ so the value takes the vulnerable subquery-detection branch (which wraps it in parentheses and embeds it raw), and it must avoid single quotes since wp_magic_quotes only neutralizes those. Affected only in WP Optimizer (sh1zen) versions up to and including 2.5.0. The dominant limiting factor is the administrator privilege requirement: admins already have extensive legitimate database access in WordPress, greatly reducing real-world attacker benefit and confining realistic risk to privilege-boundary edge cases (e.g., multisite or restricted-admin setups) or post-compromise data theft. |
| Impact | This is a classic high-CVSS-subcomponent-but-low-real-priority issue. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N = 4.9 Medium) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, no user interaction, but explicitly gated behind PR:H (administrator-level access). The single most important limiting signal is that only WordPress administrators can reach the vulnerable 's' parameter path - and administrators in WordPress already possess broad, legitimate database access (e.g., via plugin/theme editors, custom queries, or trivial capability abuse), which sharply diminishes the practical value of an admin-only SQLi. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided intelligence, so there is no evidence of active exploitation or ready-made tooling. The C:H (confidentiality) rating is defensible for a time-based blind extraction primitive, but I:N/A:N correctly reflects that this is a read-only disclosure vector. Net: real but low priority - patch in routine cycles rather than treating as urgent, because the admin precondition means an attacker who can trigger this could typically already read the database by other means. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has already obtained WordPress administrator access (via stolen credentials, session hijack, or a rogue admin) submits a search request whose 's' parameter begins with a subquery pattern like '(SELECT ...' matching the ^[(\s]*SELECT\s+ regex. The plugin embeds this value unescaped into the SQL statement, letting the attacker run time-based blind subqueries to exfiltrate data such as user password hashes or secrets from the database. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires administrator privileges, so this is not a mass-exploitable remote vector. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 19, 2026
SQL injection in WP Optimizer up to and including 2.5.0 allows authenticated administrator-level users to inject arbitrary SQL subqueries through the 's' parameter, enabling extraction of sensitive database information via time-based blind techniques. The flaw is rated CVSS 4.9 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) and its real-world priority is limited because the attacker must already hold WordPress administrator privileges, which already convey broad database access. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, and no CISA KEV entry is present.
RemediationAI
Upgrade WP Optimizer to a release newer than 2.5.0 once available; upstream fix available (Trac changeset/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed from the provided data. Review the Wordfence advisory (https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/4da302ab-8a5d-481b-8b28-a798e0982893?source=cve) and Trac changeset (https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3508033) for the exact patched build. If upgrading is not immediately possible, reduce exposure by ensuring only trusted users hold administrator roles, removing unnecessary admin accounts, and monitoring or restricting access to the plugin search functionality that supplies the 's' parameter; disabling the WP Optimizer plugin removes the vulnerable code path but loses its PageSpeed, cache, minify, and Core Web Vitals features. Because exploitation requires administrator privileges, prioritize credential hygiene, least-privilege administration, and post-compromise database monitoring; generic WAF SQL-injection rules may help but are not a substitute for removing the vulnerable branch.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is CWE-89 in WP Optimizer's Query::parse_key_compare_field() method. When a user-supplied value matches the regex ^[(\s]*SELECT\s+, the vulnerable subquery-detection branch wraps that value in parentheses and embeds it directly into the SQL string without escaping or quoting. The normal LIKE path correctly uses esc_sql($wpdb->esc_like(...)) and single quotes, but this branch bypasses those defenses. Because the payload contains no single quotes, WordPress's wp_magic_quotes() does not neutralize it. The affected package is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:sh1zen:wp_optimizer_-_pagespeed,_cache,_minify_&_core_web_vitals:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* across versions up to 2.5.0. Exploitation requires authenticated administrator access and reachability of the search functionality that feeds the 's' parameter; successful injection can support arbitrary SQL subqueries, including time-based blind payloads, to read sensitive database contents.

DescriptionCVE.org
The WP Optimizer plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to SQL Injection via the 's' parameter in all versions up to and including 2.5.0. This is due to an unsafe subquery-detection branch in the Query::parse_key_compare_field() method that, when the user-supplied value matches the regex ^[(\s]*SELECT\s+, wraps the value in parentheses and embeds it directly into the SQL string without any escaping or quoting. While the normal LIKE code path correctly uses esc_sql($wpdb->esc_like(...)) and wraps the value in single quotes, this branch completely bypasses those protections. Because the attack payload (SELECT ...) contains no single quotes, WordPress's wp_magic_quotes() provides no protection. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers with administrator-level access to inject arbitrary SQL subqueries - including time-based blind payloads - that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.
