AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 22, 2026

Local privilege-abuse in the Filesystems component of Oracle Solaris 11.4 allows a low-privileged user with logon access to the host to corrupt or destroy critical operating-system data and to trigger a complete, repeatable denial of service (hang or crash) of the OS. Disclosed in Oracle's July 2026 Critical Patch Update and rated CVSS 3.1 7.1 with high Integrity and Availability impact but no confidentiality loss. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and it is not listed in CISA KEV.

DescriptionCVE.org

Vulnerability in the Oracle Solaris product of Oracle Systems (component: Filesystems). The supported version that is affected is 11.4. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle Solaris executes to compromise Oracle Solaris. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized creation, deletion or modification access to critical data or all Oracle Solaris accessible data and unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle Solaris. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.1 (Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H).

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A local privilege escalation vulnerability in Oracle Solaris 11.4's filesystem component enables authenticated users to crash the entire operating system or permanently destroy critical system data. With no vendor-released patch identified, organizations running Solaris 11.4 face immediate risk of complete system unavailability and irreversible data loss.

Recommended Action

Within 24 hours: inventory all Solaris 11.4 systems and restrict local logon access to essential administrators only. Within 7 days: deploy file integrity monitoring (FIM) to detect unauthorized filesystem modifications and restrict interactive shell access for non-administrative accounts. Within 30 days: establish weekly monitoring of Oracle Security Alerts for patch availability; if a patch releases, validate and deploy to all Solaris 11.4 systems within 2 weeks; if no patch emerges by day 30, initiate a phased workload migration strategy to alternative operating systems for business-critical systems.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. No public exploit identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) Restrict local logon access to essential administrators only; (2) Implement strict filesystem permissions limiting write access to non-root users; (3) Deploy host-based file integrity monitoring (FIM) to detect unauthorized filesystem changes; (4) Enforce multi-factor authentication (MFA) for administrative access; (5) Isolate Solaris 11.4 systems from untrusted networks where possible; (6) Establish weekly monitoring of Oracle Security Alerts for patch availability.

What every action level means
Emergency Immediate action required. Criteria: CRITICAL + in CISA KEV (actively exploited) without patch, OR CRITICAL + EPSS > 30% without patch, OR CRITICAL + active threat signals without patch.
Act Now Prioritize within 24-48h. Criteria: in KEV with patch available, OR CRITICAL + public POC, OR HIGH + EPSS > 10%, OR CRITICAL + active threat, OR any CRITICAL severity.
This Week Schedule remediation this week. Criteria: HIGH severity (CVSS 7.0-8.9). Patch within normal change window.
This Month Plan within 30 days. Criteria: MEDIUM severity (CVSS 4.0-6.9), lower exploitation probability. Include in regular patch cycle.
Monitor Track and reassess. Criteria: LOW severity (CVSS 0.1-3.9), minimal exploitation risk. No immediate action needed.
