Exploitation Conditions

The decisive prerequisite is that install.php remains reachable on the target: the advisory states the installer stays accessible after a normal installation, which is why an unauthenticated attacker who can reach that endpoint can exploit it against affected default deployments of e107 prior to 2.3.7. No authentication, user interaction, or special configuration is required (PR:N/UI:N). The limiting factor is deployment hygiene - sites that have deleted install.php or placed it behind access controls/network restrictions after setup are not exploitable, so realistic exposure is confined to installations that left the installer endpoint publicly reachable. The patch addresses this by positively detecting a completed installation and requiring a signed, HMAC-verified provisioning token instead of trusting unserialized client state.

Impact

All provided severity signals point the same direction: the CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) describes a remotely reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw with full C:H/I:H/A:H impact, and the vulnerability class (CWE-502 PHP object injection via unserialize() without allowed_classes) with a known reachable gadget chain (GuzzleHttp\Psr7\PumpStream → paths.hash → site_path string coercion → arbitrary callable) makes reliable RCE realistic rather than theoretical. This is a genuine high-priority issue, not a high-CVSS/low-real-risk case. HOWEVER, several corroborating signals are absent from the input: no EPSS exploitation-probability score was supplied, there is no CISA KEV listing (so no confirmed active exploitation), and no POC flag was set - therefore 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' despite the published commit diffs and a unit test (pumpStreamPayload) that demonstrate the gadget path. The practical risk is gated by one real-world prerequisite the CVSS vector does not capture: install.php must still be reachable on the target. Because the description states the installer remains accessible after a normal installation, many default deployments are expected to be exposed, which keeps real-world risk high; sites that deleted or access-restricted install.php are not exploitable. Net: treat as urgent-patch given unauthenticated RCE and a demonstrated gadget, but note exploitation is widespread-capable only where the installer endpoint is exposed.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker locates a running e107 site (prior to 2.3.7) whose install.php remains reachable after setup and sends a crafted POST request whose previous_steps parameter encodes a serialized GuzzleHttp\Psr7\PumpStream object graph. When install.php unserialize()s this input without class restrictions, the object flows through paths.hash into site_path where string coercion invokes an attacker-controlled callable, executing arbitrary PHP as the web server user. No public weaponized exploit is identified at time of analysis, but patch commit diffs and a unit test publicly demonstrate the gadget path, lowering the bar to reproduce.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Unauthenticated PHP object injection in e107 CMS before 2.3.7 lets a remote attacker who can reach install.php execute arbitrary PHP functions with the web server's privileges, resulting in full server compromise (CVSS 3.1 base 9.8, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/C:H/I:H/A:H). The flaw arises because the installer decodes the attacker-controlled previous_steps POST parameter and feeds it to unserialize() without restricting allowed classes, and because install.php remains reachable after a normal installation. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and CISA KEV does not list this issue, but the advisory documents a complete, directly usable gadget chain (GuzzleHttp\Psr\7\PumpStream → paths.hash → site_path callable coercion) that makes reliable exploitation realistic for any deployment that left the installer endpoint exposed; sites that deleted or access-restricted install.php after setup are the main mitigating factor.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to e107 CMS 2.3.7 or later - the vendor-released fix is tagged at https://github.com/e107inc/e107/releases/tag/v2.3.7, with the code changes in commits 5d6d649e8cf01854d6024d07997c2449fdd75f24 and 6c404295213952aedb9b3689be19dd4c7ba550b0 and details in advisory https://github.com/e107inc/e107/security/advisories/GHSA-c8h6-wpj3-4cr8; the patch positively detects a completed installation (via real database credentials and an install_pending lock) and replaces unserialized client state with an HMAC-SHA256-verified provisioning token. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is to remove install.php from the web root or block it at the edge - deny it in the web server configuration (nginx/apache location or FilesMatch rules) and/or restrict it to administrator source IPs - with the trade-off that legitimate reinstallation or upgrade wizards will be blocked until the rule is lifted; alternatively take the installer directory offline or place the whole site behind a network ACL or VPN. Note that network-level blocking only helps if the attacker cannot reach the endpoint at all, since the flaw requires no authentication or user interaction, and do not rely on WAF signatures alone because the payload is a POST body that is base64/serialized and trivially re-encoded.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause class is CWE-502 (Deserialization of Untrusted Data) in PHP. install.php takes the user-supplied previous_steps POST value, decodes it, and passes it to unserialize() with no allowed_classes restriction - both at file scope and a second time inside the e_install constructor - so an attacker fully controls the object graph that is instantiated. Because e107 bundles GuzzleHttp\Psr7\PumpStream, a crafted graph can route the paths.hash value into the site_path property, and the subsequent PHP string coercion of that property invokes an attacker-chosen callable, converting object injection into arbitrary PHP function execution. Compounding the issue, the installer does not positively detect a completed installation, so install.php continues to serve requests on an already-deployed site. The vendor's fix (commits 5d6d649e8cf01854d6024d07997c2449fdd75f24 and 6c404295213952aedb9b3689be19dd4c7ba550b0) replaces trust in serialized client state with a 256-bit CSPRNG provisioning token: wizard state is now base64 JSON plus an HMAC-SHA256 MAC, verified with hash_equals() over the received bytes before decoding so canonicalisation tricks and object injection cannot influence the result, and class2.php now redirects to the installer when an install_pending lock is present or database credentials are absent.

DescriptionCVE.org

e107 is a content management system (CMS). Prior to 2.3.7, install.php decodes the attacker-controlled previous_steps POST parameter and passes it to unserialize() at file scope and again in the e_install constructor without restricting allowed classes. The installer remains accessible after a normal installation, and a crafted object graph using the bundled GuzzleHttp\Psr7\PumpStream class can flow through paths.hash into site_path, where string coercion invokes an attacker-controlled callable. An unauthenticated attacker who can reach install.php can therefore execute arbitrary PHP functions with the web server process's privileges, leading to full server compromise. This issue is fixed in version 2.3.7.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

e107 CMS deployments that left install.php reachable after installation are exposed to unauthenticated full server compromise, allowing an attacker with only network access to run arbitrary code with the web server's privileges. Because no credentials or user interaction are required and a complete exploitation pathway is documented, every internet-facing instance running a version prior to 2.3.7 should be treated as an active exposure affecting hosted data, integrated credentials, and any downstream systems the server can reach. Leadership should care because the blast radius extends beyond the CMS itself to the hosting environment and connected business services.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: delete, rename, or move install.php after installation; deny external access to install.php at the web server, reverse proxy, or WAF (IP allow-list for administrators is the strongest option, since deployments that deleted or access-restricted install.php after setup are the primary mitigating factor); restrict web server process privileges and file permissions; monitor and alert on POST requests to install.php containing a previous_steps parameter; and isolate or rebuild any host showing signs of compromise. Note that expose status of install.php is the deciding control - no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and CISA KEV does not list this issue, but the documented gadget chain makes reliable exploitation realistic for any deployment that left the installer endpoint reachable.
