| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a Joplin Server deployment (prior to 3.7.2) configured for MIXED authentication - both local password accounts AND SAML SSO enabled (SAML_ENABLED=true). The attacker must control or influence an IdP session capable of asserting an existing local user's email address; with that, a single POST /api/saml returns a valid session for the matched local account with no knowledge of its password. Not exploitable on default single-auth deployments, SAML-only or local-only instances, or where the attacker cannot induce the IdP to assert the victim's email. No Joplin credentials and no user interaction with the victim are required. |
| Impact | This is a genuine authentication-bypass (CWE-290) with a well-corroborated fix, but its real-world priority is bounded by a specific deployment gate. The vendor CVSS of 7.4 (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) is credible: the flaw is reachable over the network with no Joplin credentials (PR:N), but AC:H correctly reflects that it only manifests in Joplin Server instances configured for MIXED local + SAML authentication and requires the attacker to control an IdP session that can assert a victim's email address - a non-trivial precondition. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV entry, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'; the absence of KEV/EPSS signals means there is no evidence of widespread or automated exploitation, and the AC:H gating argues for targeted rather than opportunistic abuse. The C:H/I:H/A:N impact is sound - full read/write to a victim's notes, files, and settings, but no availability effect. Net: a real, patch-worthy account-takeover issue for the narrow population running Joplin Server with SAML alongside local accounts; lower operational urgency for the much larger base of Joplin desktop/single-auth users who are not affected. All signals are consistent; the main uncertainty is exploit availability, which is simply unreported rather than conflicting. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An organization runs Joplin Server with both local password accounts and SAML SSO enabled. An attacker who can make their federated IdP session assert a target's email address submits POST /api/saml; because ssoLogin() matches the existing local account by email without checking is_external, the attacker receives an authenticated session for that local account and reads or modifies the victim's notes, files, and settings without ever knowing the password. No public exploit code is identified, but the attack requires no Joplin credentials and only a single crafted SAML login request. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 21, 2026
Authentication bypass in Joplin Server prior to 3.7.2 allows an unauthenticated remote attacker who can control or influence a SAML identity assertion to obtain a valid session for an existing local password-based account purely by matching the asserted email address, granting read and write access to that user's notes, files, and settings without knowledge of the local password. The defect is gated to deployments running mixed authentication - local password accounts and SAML SSO enabled together (SAML_ENABLED=true) - so SAML-only, local-only, and default single-auth installations are not exposed. The issue is fixed in version 3.7.2 via a check that rejects SSO login for non-external accounts; no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Joplin Server 3.7.2, which fixes the flaw by refusing SSO authentication for accounts that are not external (is_external = 0); upgrade via the normal Joplin Server release/container update path and restart the service, following the advisory at https://github.com/laurent22/joplin/security/advisories/GHSA-5px3-4f5x-hjc5 and the upstream changes in https://github.com/laurent22/joplin/pull/15647 (commit b6d69d072919cbe769234f93d95ed21e1ec129b2). If immediate upgrading is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to break the mixed-authentication precondition: set SAML_ENABLED=false so only local password authentication remains, at the cost of losing SSO for all users, or, if SSO must stay enabled, ensure the identity provider can never assert email addresses owned by local Joplin accounts - for example by assigning SAML identities a separate email domain or explicitly excluding those addresses in the IdP claim/attribute mapping - which requires IdP-side governance and ongoing maintenance plus auditing of existing account/email overlaps. A transitional option is to migrate any user whose email is IdP-assertable to an external (SAML) account and remove the corresponding local password account, accepting that those users can no longer authenticate with a local password. Post-patch behavior should be expected as a deliberate failure rather than account linking: SAML logins asserting a local account's email will simply be rejected, so review IdP email mappings for legitimate collisions before and after upgrading to avoid locking out users, and treat any pre-upgrade logs showing successful SAML logins for accounts that have local passwords as potential compromise indicators.

Technical ContextAI · show details
This is a CWE-290 (Authentication Bypass by Spoofing) flaw in the Joplin Server authentication layer, specifically in UserModel.ssoLogin() in packages/server/src/models/UserModel.ts. Joplin Server distinguishes two account classes: local, password-based accounts, and external accounts created through an identity provider, tracked by the is_external column. In the vulnerable code path, ssoLogin() resolved an incoming SAML assertion to an existing account by matching the IdP-asserted email address alone and returned that account - including local accounts where is_external is 0 - thereby skipping the local password check entirely. Because the SAML endpoint (POST /api/saml) treats the asserted email as authoritative, an attacker who can induce the IdP to assert a victim's local email address receives a session bound to the victim's account. The upstream fix (commit b6d69d072919cbe769234f93d95ed21e1ec129b2, PR 15647) adds if (user && !user.is_external) return null; to the resolved-user branch, so a SAML assertion that matches a local account now fails authentication rather than silently adopting it, and a regression test ('should not log in as a local account via SSO based on email match alone') was added to UserModel.test.ts. Per the authoritative assessment, the CVSS vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N: exploitation is unauthenticated (PR:N) and requires no victim interaction (UI:N), but is rated high complexity (AC:H) because it depends on the attacker's ability to control an IdP session that asserts the target's email - the deployment-gating condition that bounds real-world risk.

Joplin is an open source note-taking and to-do application that organises notes and lists into notebooks. Prior to 3.7.2, Joplin Server's UserModel.ssoLogin() returns an existing account matched by an IdP-asserted email without checking the account's is_external flag. In deployments using mixed local and SAML authentication, an attacker whose IdP session can assert a local user's email can pass POST /api/saml, receive a session for that local account, and access or modify the victim's notes, files, and settings without knowing the local password. This issue is fixed in version 3.7.2.

Executive ViewAI
Organizations running Joplin Server with mixed authentication - local password accounts and SAML SSO enabled together (SAML_ENABLED=true) - on versions prior to 3.7.2 are exposed to an authentication bypass in which a remote attacker who can control or influence a SAML identity assertion obtains a valid session for an existing local account simply by matching that account's email address. The consequence is unauthorized read and write access to the victim user's notes, files, and settings with no knowledge of their local password, putting the confidentiality and integrity of business content stored in Joplin at risk. Deployments using SAML-only, local-only, or default single-authentication configurations are not exposed, so leadership should focus remediation on identifying and upgrading the mixed-auth instances that are.
Apply vendor patch (Joplin Server 3.7.2).
