Unauthenticated network-reachable SSRF (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) pivots the frontend into a different authority (S:C), enabling reads of credentials and reads/writes to internal APIs (C:H/I:H/A:H).

Kubeflow Pipelines enables users to build and deploy portable, scalable machine learning workflows. Prior to 2.17.0, the Kubeflow Pipelines frontend exposes an unauthenticated server-side request forgery vulnerability through the /_proxy/ route in frontend/server/proxy-middleware.ts. The _routePathWithReferer() function accepts an arbitrary attacker-controlled HTTP or HTTPS target and passes its origin to createProxyMiddleware without a host allowlist or filtering for loopback, link-local, RFC1918, or cluster-local addresses. The route remains outside the authorization middleware when ENABLE_AUTHZ=true and is reachable through /apis/v1beta1/_proxy/, /apis/v2beta1/_proxy/, /pipeline/apis/v1beta1/_proxy/, and /pipeline/apis/v2beta1/_proxy/, including through a crafted Referer header. Requests can forward attacker-controlled methods, headers such as Authorization, Cookie, and X-Forwarded-For, and POST bodies to reachable internal services, while returning the upstream response to the unauthenticated client. This can expose cloud metadata credentials, Kubernetes or service APIs, and other cluster-internal endpoints to unauthorized read or modification. This issue is fixed in version 2.17.0.

AnalysisAI
Server-side request forgery in the Kubeflow Pipelines frontend server (prior to 2.17.0) lets any unauthenticated network client coerce the pipeline UI backend into making arbitrary HTTP/HTTPS requests to internal targets via the /_proxy/ route. Because the route sits outside the authorization middleware even when ENABLE_AUTHZ=true, attackers can reach cloud metadata endpoints, the Kubernetes API, and other cluster-internal services, forwarding chosen methods, Authorization/Cookie headers, and POST bodies while receiving the upstream response. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires only network reachability to the Kubeflow Pipelines frontend server; the /_proxy/ route is unauthenticated and remains outside the authorization middleware even when ENABLE_AUTHZ=true, so enabling authorization does NOT mitigate it. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | All available signals point to genuine critical risk rather than an inflated CVSS. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to Kubeflow Pipelines 2.17.0, which removes the generic /_proxy/ endpoint (it now returns HTTP 410) and replaces it with a scoped, secret-signed TensorBoard proxy (Vendor-released patch: 2.17.0). … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, immediately audit network exposure of Kubeflow Pipelines frontend endpoints and implement emergency restrictions to the /_proxy/ route; consider disabling the frontend entirely if operationally feasible. …
