1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires a valid authenticated Xibo CMS account of ANY privilege level (PR:L); the attacker does not need view rights on the targeted layout because the vulnerable GET /layout/status/{id} route lacked both the per-object checkViewable ACL and the layout.view/template.view FeatureAuth middleware (both added in 4.4.3). The primary limiting factor is that authentication is mandatory - this is not exploitable by unauthenticated internet attackers - so realistic risk is confined to environments with untrusted or over-provisioned CMS user accounts. Affected: xibo-cms <= 4.4.2; fixed in 4.4.3.

Impact

This is a moderate, authorization-only information-disclosure flaw (CWE-862, IDOR / broken object-level authorization), not a high-urgency issue. The supplied CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N, 5.4) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity attack that requires an authenticated low-privilege account (PR:L). The exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - no KEV listing and no PoC reference appear in the input, and no EPSS score was provided, so widespread opportunistic exploitation cannot be inferred. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', which aligns with a patch-on-normal-cadence priority rather than act_now/emergency. One signal conflict: the input CVSS vector asserts I:L (integrity impact), but every authoritative source - the GHSA advisory and the description - states the flaw only allows an attacker to VIEW the status and metadata of layouts, i.e. read-only disclosure; the I:L component is not supported by the evidence and the true impact is confidentiality-only (C:L). Net: a real but low-to-medium priority issue gated behind authentication, best handled by scheduled patching.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who holds any authenticated Xibo CMS account (even the lowest-privilege user) enumerates layout IDs and issues GET /layout/status/{id} requests for layouts they have no view rights to, receiving the status and metadata of those layouts. Because the missing check was object-level authorization, the server returns data for layouts belonging to other users or groups. No public proof-of-concept exploit code is identified in the available sources.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

Missing object-level authorization on the GET /layout/status/{id} endpoint in Xibo CMS 4.4.2 and earlier lets any authenticated CMS user - regardless of role, and even without view rights on the target - read the status and metadata of arbitrary layouts by supplying their IDs. The endpoint is a classic IDOR / broken access-control case (CWE-862): the route had neither a per-object checkViewable check nor the layout.view/template.view feature-authorization middleware, both of which were added in 4.4.3. Exploitation requires a valid account (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N per independent assessment), so risk is concentrated in deployments that over-provision accounts or admit untrusted users; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV, making this a moderate, authorization-only information-disclosure flaw rather than an urgent remote compromise.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Xibo CMS 4.4.3 or later (development-line users should move to 4.5.0-beta or newer), which applies both the checkViewable object-level guard and the layout.view/template.view FeatureAuth middleware to GET /layout/status/{id} as shown in PR https://github.com/xibosignage/xibo-cms/pull/3481 and commits 610f0ecbfdf7667d67c0dbe4aebc85245040d952 and 97e878f13615db2a448fdcff22895a19005f5d3a. The vendor states that upgrading is necessary to remediate and offers only one workaround for those who cannot upgrade immediately: revoke CMS access from any users you do not trust, which removes the authentication prerequisite for this flaw at the cost of cutting those users out of the platform entirely. Because the endpoint merely discloses layout status and metadata, the practical exposure is limited to what an authenticated account can enumerate, so auditing and trimming over-privileged or dormant CMS accounts is a useful supplementary step alongside the update. Technical ContextAI · show details

Xibo is an open-source digital signage platform whose CMS is a PHP application built on the Slim framework, with routes declared centrally in lib/routes.php and request handling implemented in controller classes under lib/Controller. The vulnerable route $app->get('/layout/status/{id}', ['\Xibo\Controller\Layout','status'])->setName('layout.status') was registered without the FeatureAuth middleware applied to comparable layout routes, so the request never passed through the layout.view / template.view feature-permission gate. The controller method likewise fetched the layout via layoutFactory->getById($id) and processed it without calling $this->getUser()->checkViewable($layout), the per-object ACL helper that enforces ownership and sharing rules. The result is a textbook CWE-862 missing-authorization condition (specifically broken object-level authorization), where the object identifier in the URL is trusted without verifying the caller's rights to that object. The upstream fix, PR #3481 (commits 610f0ec and 97e878f), inserts the checkViewable guard and throws AccessDeniedException before the concurrent-request lock is taken, and attaches FeatureAuth for layout.view and template.view to the /layout/status/{id} route, restoring both layers of defense. The trigger only requires issuing an authenticated GET with an arbitrary numeric layout ID; no special headers, payloads, or timing conditions are described in the available sources.

DescriptionCVE.org

Xibo is an open source digital signage platform with a web content management system and Windows display player software. Prior to 4.4.3, missing access-control checks on GET /layout/status/{id} allow an authenticated user with any privileges to view the status and metadata of any layout, including layouts for which the user does not have view rights. This issue is fixed in version 4.4.3.
