Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target Reactor Netty HTTP Server application has explicitly enabled HAProxy PROXY Protocol parsing in its configuration - this is not the default behavior. The attacker must be able to reach the Reactor Netty backend with a TCP connection carrying a crafted or spoofed PROXY Protocol header; in well-architected deployments, only the HAProxy tier should be able to reach the backend, which limits exposure. The vulnerability does not require authentication (CVSS PR:N), requires no user interaction (UI:N), and operates over the network (AV:N). Limiting factors are the mandatory non-default HAProxy Protocol configuration and any network segmentation between the public internet and the backend service. Deployments where the Reactor Netty process is directly internet-exposed with PROXY Protocol enabled are at greatest risk.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N) correctly frames this as a moderate-severity, network-reachable integrity issue. The attack complexity is low in the sense that no authentication is required to influence the PROXY Protocol header on a misrouted or attacker-controlled connection. However, real-world exploitability is gated by a mandatory non-default configuration: HAProxy Protocol must be explicitly enabled. Organizations not using HAProxy or a PROXY-Protocol-capable load balancer are not affected. The practical risk concentrates in deployments using IP-based access control, fraud detection, or audit trails, where a spoofed source IP could enable bypass of controls or false attribution. EPSS data is not available in the provided intelligence. No KEV listing and no POC code exists, and the tagged 'Information Disclosure' impact is consistent with an attacker learning what IP the server attributes to them rather than extracting sensitive server-side data. This is a real but bounded risk - not a critical priority for most organizations, but genuinely significant for any Reactor Netty deployment where IP identity is a security control.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with network access to a Reactor Netty service protected by an HAProxy load balancer sends a crafted TCP connection carrying a malformed or spoofed PROXY Protocol header. Due to the parsing flaw, the server interprets the attacker's source IP as a different, possibly trusted, address. This allows the attacker to appear to originate from an allowlisted IP range, bypassing rate limits, IP-based access controls, or skewing audit logs. No confirmed POC exists at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 27, 2026

Reactor Netty HTTP Server incorrectly evaluates the remote client IP address in deployments where HAProxy PROXY Protocol support is enabled, potentially allowing network attackers to spoof their apparent source IP. Affected versions span the 1.0.x, 1.1.x/1.2.x, and 1.3.x branches. This flaw carries no confidentiality or availability impact per the CVSS vector, but can undermine IP-based access controls, rate limiting, audit logging, or allowlist/denylist enforcement that rely on the server's perception of the client IP. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing is present at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Consult the VMware Spring security advisory at https://spring.io/security/cve-2026-47845 for exact fixed versions, which are not enumerated in the currently available intelligence. Users of the 1.3.x branch should upgrade to a release beyond 1.3.6, users of the 1.1.x/1.2.x branch should upgrade beyond 1.2.18, and users of the 1.0.x branch should upgrade beyond 1.0.52 or migrate to a supported release train. If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, the most effective compensating control is to disable HAProxy PROXY Protocol support in the Reactor Netty configuration, accepting that the server will then see only the load balancer's IP rather than the original client IP - a trade-off that may affect logging fidelity or IP-based features. Alternatively, enforce strict network controls so that only trusted HAProxy instances can reach the Reactor Netty service, reducing the attacker's ability to inject crafted PROXY Protocol headers.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Reactor Netty is the reactive, non-blocking HTTP networking layer underpinning Spring WebFlux. The HAProxy PROXY Protocol (versions 1 and 2) is a standard mechanism by which a load balancer or reverse proxy prepends client connection metadata - including the original source IP - to the TCP stream before forwarding it to the backend server. When Reactor Netty parses this PROXY Protocol header, a logic flaw under specific scenarios causes the server to derive the wrong remote IP address from the header. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:spring:reactor_netty:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers all affected versions (1.0.52 and earlier, 1.1.0-1.2.18, and 1.3.0-1.3.6). No CWE is assigned in the advisory, but the behavior aligns conceptually with improper input validation of trusted-proxy headers (analogous to CWE-290 or CWE-346), where the server mis-identifies the source of a request.
