The CI HUB Connector plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'id' attribute of the cihub_metadata shortcode in all versions up to, and including, 1.2.106 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.
AnalysisAI
Stored cross-site scripting in CI HUB Connector plugin for WordPress up to version 1.2.106 allows authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access or above to inject arbitrary JavaScript through the 'id' attribute of the cihub_metadata shortcode, which executes in the context of any user visiting the injected page. The vulnerability stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the shortcode handler, enabling persistent XSS attacks that can compromise site visitors and administrative accounts.
Technical ContextAI
The CI HUB Connector plugin processes WordPress shortcodes, specifically the cihub_metadata shortcode which accepts user-supplied parameters including an 'id' attribute. The plugin fails to sanitize this input before storing it in the database and fails to escape the output when rendering the shortcode on frontend pages. This is a classic stored XSS vulnerability (CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) where attacker-controlled data persists in the WordPress database and is rendered without proper HTML entity encoding. The shortcode processing occurs at line 645 of the plugin's main PHP file, where the id parameter is directly interpolated into output without escaping functions such as esc_attr() or wp_kses_post().
RemediationAI
Upgrade the CI HUB Connector plugin to a patched version released after 1.2.106; check the official WordPress plugin repository or the plugin vendor's site for the latest secure release. If an upgraded version is not yet available, apply the following compensating controls: (1) Restrict the cihub_metadata shortcode to administrators only by modifying the plugin's shortcode registration to require manage_options capability instead of edit_posts, which limits injection to high-privilege users; (2) Disable the plugin entirely if its functionality is not actively required, reducing attack surface; (3) Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block POST requests to wp-admin/post.php containing the cihub_metadata shortcode with unescaped HTML entities in the id parameter, though this will not prevent exploitation via direct database manipulation by Contributor accounts. Monitor all posts and pages containing the cihub_metadata shortcode for unexpected JavaScript injections. Contact the plugin developer through the WordPress plugin support forum at https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/browser/ci-hub-connector/ to obtain patched version details if not publicly available.
