DescriptionCVE.org

The Ecover Builder For Dummies plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'id' parameter of the 'ecover' shortcode in all versions up to and including 1.0. This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on the user-supplied 'id' shortcode attribute. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

AnalysisAI

The Ecover Builder For Dummies WordPress plugin contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the 'id' parameter of the 'ecover' shortcode due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. Authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access or higher can inject arbitrary JavaScript that persists in page content and executes for all users viewing the affected page. With a CVSS score of 6.4 and confirmed by Wordfence, this vulnerability enables privilege escalation and defacement attacks within WordPress environments.

Technical ContextAI

This vulnerability stems from CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation), a foundational web application security flaw. The affected product is the Ecover Builder For Dummies plugin (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:miguelmartinezlopez:ecover_builder_for_dummies:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) maintained by Miguel Martinez Lopez. The vulnerability exists in the shortcode handler within plugin_builder.php at lines 39, 44, and 58, where the 'id' shortcode attribute is processed and rendered into page output without proper WordPress sanitization functions like sanitize_text_field() or escaping functions like esc_attr(). Since shortcodes are executed server-side during page rendering and output directly into HTML context, unsanitized user input in shortcode attributes becomes part of the DOM where it can be interpreted as executable script.

RemediationAI

Update the Ecover Builder For Dummies plugin to a patched version if available from the plugin developer Miguel Martinez Lopez, or disable and remove the plugin if no patch has been released. Immediate mitigation requires implementing input sanitization by applying WordPress's sanitize_text_field() function to the 'id' parameter and using esc_attr() or esc_html() when outputting the parameter in HTML context. WordPress administrators should restrict Contributor-level permissions to trusted users only and audit existing page content for injected scripts using tools like Wordfence Scan. Until patching is complete, disable the plugin via the WordPress admin dashboard and contact the plugin developer for patch availability through the WordPress plugin support forums.
