Network-delivered reflected XSS requires no attacker auth (PR:N), mandates one victim click (UI:R), changes scope to the victim's browser session (S:C), with low confidentiality and integrity impact limited to that session.

OpenEMR before 8.3.0 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in the patient portal template import handler. The templateHtml GET parameter is reflected into the page response without sanitization. An attacker can craft a URL that executes arbitrary JavaScript in the browser of any authenticated user with Forms Administration permissions who visits the link, enabling session hijacking.
AnalysisAI
Reflected XSS in OpenEMR's patient portal template import handler allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to craft a malicious URL that executes arbitrary JavaScript in the browser of any authenticated Forms Administrator who visits it, enabling session hijacking with administrative privileges. The vulnerable parameter (templateHtml GET) was reflected directly into the page response in portal/import_template.php without sanitization, and the only prior protection - a naive <script tag blacklist - was trivially bypassable with event-handler payloads. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | The victim must be currently authenticated to OpenEMR with Forms Administration permissions - ordinary portal patients and lower-privileged staff cannot serve as viable targets. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 5.1 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:N correctly characterizes the attack profile: the attacker requires no authentication (PR:N), the network vector is unrestricted (AV:N), but active user interaction is mandatory (UI:A) - the victim must follow a crafted link. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to OpenEMR 8.3.0 or later, which replaces the bypassed script-tag blacklist with HTMLPurifier-based sanitization applied at both persistence and render time in `portal/import_template.php` and `DocumentTemplateService.php`. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
