The Columns by BestWebSoft plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'id' shortcode attribute of the [print_clmns] shortcode in all versions up to and including 1.0.3. This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on the 'id' attribute. The shortcode receives the 'id' parameter via shortcode_atts() at line 596 and directly embeds it into HTML output at line 731 (in a div id attribute) and into inline CSS at lines 672-729 without any escaping or sanitization. While the SQL query uses %d to cast the value to an integer for database lookup, the original unsanitized string value of $id is still used in the HTML/CSS output. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The attack requires that at least one column exists in the plugin (created by an admin), as the SQL query must return results for the output branch to be reached.
AnalysisAI
Stored Cross-Site Scripting in Columns by BestWebSoft WordPress plugin (versions up to 1.0.3) allows authenticated contributors and above to inject arbitrary JavaScript via the 'id' shortcode attribute of [print_clmns], which is embedded unsanitized into HTML id attributes and inline CSS. The vulnerability requires at least one column to exist in the plugin database but affects any user viewing a page containing the injected shortcode, with a CVSS score of 6.4 reflecting moderate impact across confidentiality and integrity. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.
Technical ContextAI
The vulnerability exists in the WordPress plugin's shortcode handler, which processes user input through the [print_clmns] shortcode using WordPress's shortcode_atts() function at line 596. While the plugin correctly casts the 'id' parameter to an integer (%d) in a SQL query for database lookup, the original unsanitized string value is directly concatenated into HTML output at line 731 (within a div id attribute) and into inline CSS styles at lines 672-729 without escaping or sanitization. This is a classic Stored XSS vulnerability (CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) where user-controlled data reaches the DOM without proper output encoding. The vulnerability requires Contributor-level or higher WordPress user role, indicating a privilege escalation vector from authenticated attackers. The attack surface is limited by the requirement that at least one column must exist in the plugin configuration, as the vulnerable code path only executes when the SQL query returns results.
RemediationAI
WordPress administrators should immediately disable and remove the Columns by BestWebSoft plugin (versions 1.0.3 and earlier) until a patched version is released. As no vendor-released patched version has been confirmed at time of analysis, site owners should migrate any column functionality to alternative maintained plugins such as Advanced Custom Fields, Elementor, or Beaver Builder, which have more robust security practices. If the plugin is critical to site operations, administrators should restrict Contributor-level access to trusted users only and implement Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to detect and block script injection attempts in shortcode attributes. Monitor the Wordfence vulnerability intelligence page (https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/d3e293db-9177-4fbb-a469-900d9330642d) and the WordPress plugin repository (https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/browser/columns-bws/) for updates indicating a patched release. In the interim, audit existing pages containing [print_clmns] shortcodes for suspicious 'id' attribute values.
