MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a deployed site running ACF Extended (≤0.9.2.7) that serves at least one frontend page utilizing an ACF form - that page is what exposes the guest acf_nonce in its source, which is the exact prerequisite the attacker needs to pass acf_verify_ajax(). Where no public-facing ACF form is rendered, the guest nonce is not exposed and the nopriv handlers are harder to reach. The flaw was only partially patched in 0.9.2.4, so sites on 0.9.2.4 through 0.9.2.7 remain affected. No authentication, user interaction, or non-default configuration beyond using ACF forms on public pages is required; impact is confined to disclosure of post titles and Flexible Content layout structures. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity issue, not a critical emergency. The supplied CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N = 5.3) describes a remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity attack with only LOW confidentiality impact and NO integrity or availability impact - consistent with CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) and the description, which limits disclosure to post titles and internal Flexible Content layout structures. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no confirmed public exploit code were provided, so the strongest exploitation signals are absent. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now or emergency), which aligns with the picture of a real-but-low-impact information-disclosure flaw rather than a high-CVSS issue with low real risk. The PR:N rating is credible here precisely because the acf_verify_ajax() nonce check is defeated by a guest nonce that is publicly exposed in frontend page source - so the one authorization control present does not actually restrict unauthenticated callers. The limiting factor is impact, not reachability: an attacker gains metadata (titles and layout structure), not post content, credentials, or write access. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker loads any public frontend page that renders an ACF form, scrapes the guest acf_nonce value from the page source, and replays it against the plugin's wp_ajax_nopriv_* handlers. Because those handlers validate only the (guest-obtainable) nonce and omit current_user_can() checks, the attacker enumerates otherwise-hidden post titles and internal Flexible Content layout structures using ordinary HTTP requests. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data; the attack is low-complexity and requires no user interaction. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
The Advanced Custom Fields: Extended WordPress plugin, in every release up to and including 0.9.2.7, registers multiple AJAX handlers for unauthenticated visitors (wp_ajax_nopriv_*) that perform no current_user_can() capability check, so remote attackers with no account can invoke server-side actions and read data they should not see. The only gate is ACF's acf_verify_ajax() nonce validation, and because guest nonces (acf_nonce) are printed into the source of any frontend page containing an ACF form, an attacker can simply scrape a valid nonce and pass the check, disclosing post titles and internal Flexible Content layout structures. Rated CVSS 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, confidentiality-only impact); there is no CISA KEV entry and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and this is a moderate-severity information-disclosure issue rather than a critical emergency, though sites on 0.9.2.4 through 0.9.2.7 remain exposed because the 0.9.2.4 fix was only partial.
RemediationAI
Upstream code changes addressing the missing authorization checks are referenced at https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3516027/ (the 0.9.2.4 partial patch) and https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3754818/, but the input data does not name a released plugin version that fully resolves CVE-2026-2839, so treat any version at or below 0.9.2.7 as unfixed and confirm with the vendor (https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/9954ef37-bae0-48fb-9654-ff54750c46c2?source=cve) before considering the plugin remediated. Because the guest acf_nonce embedded in frontend ACF forms is the pivot that makes the nopriv handlers reachable, the most direct compensating control is to stop exposing it: remove or restrict ACF forms from publicly accessible pages, or gate those pages behind authentication, until a fully patched build is confirmed - the trade-off is loss of public-facing form functionality. Where public ACF forms must remain, restrict or block unauthenticated POST requests to admin-ajax.php for the affected ACF Extended actions at the WAF or reverse-proxy layer, accepting the risk of false positives against legitimate frontend form submissions. Rate-limiting or challenge-gating admin-ajax.php for anonymous visitors reduces mass enumeration of post titles but does not fix the underlying authorization gap, and none of these workarounds removes the risk as completely as installing a release in which the nopriv handlers enforce current_user_can(). Sites still on 0.9.2.4 through 0.9.2.7 should not be considered patched.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-862 (Missing Authorization). WordPress exposes parallel AJAX entry points for logged-out users via the wp_ajax_nopriv_<action> hook, and any handler registered there is reachable by anyone who can send a POST to admin-ajax.php. ACF Extended registered such handlers in its Advanced Link and Flexible Content Async field modules, documented in the referenced plugin source at includes/fields/field-advanced-link.php (lines 25 and 603) and includes/fields/field-flexible-content-async.php (lines 24 and 151). Rather than enforcing capability checks with current_user_can(), the handlers relied entirely on acf_verify_ajax(), which validates an ACF nonce. That control collapses for guests: the acf_nonce value is generated for anonymous users and embedded in the markup of frontend pages that render an ACF form, so the nonce is effectively public and provides no authorization boundary. The consequence is that the handlers can be driven without authentication to bypass WordPress visibility permissions and return post titles and internal Flexible Content layout definitions. Two plugin Trac changesets are referenced - 3516027, corresponding to the partial mitigation shipped in 0.9.2.4, and the later 3754818 - but the data does not state which handler paths each changeset fully closes; the exploitation conditions confirm that the 0.9.2.4 change did not resolve the issue, since versions through 0.9.2.7 are still listed as affected.

DescriptionCVE.org
The Advanced Custom Fields: Extended plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized access of data and triggering of server-side actions in all versions up to, and including, 0.9.2.7. This is due to multiple AJAX handlers registered for unauthenticated users (wp_ajax_nopriv_*) that fail to implement proper current_user_can() authorization checks. While these handlers use ACF's acf_verify_ajax() function to validate cryptographic nonces, the acf_nonce values are generated for guest users and publicly exposed in the page source of any frontend page utilizing an ACF form. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to extract the guest nonce and bypass WordPress visibility permissions, leading to the unauthorized disclosure of post titles and internal Flexible Content layout structures. The vulnerability was partially patched in version 0.9.2.4.
