Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Mar 12, 2026
Mastodon prior to versions 4.5.5, 4.4.12, and 4.3.18 lacks input validation on list and filter names, allowing authenticated users to create arbitrarily long strings that consume excessive server resources and storage. A local attacker can exploit this to degrade system performance or render their own web interface unusable, though no patch is currently available for affected versions.
Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
Mastodon versions up to 4.5.5 is affected by allocation of resources without limits or throttling (CVSS 4.3).
RemediationAI
Monitor vendor advisories for a patch. Restrict network access to the affected service where possible.

This vulnerability (CWE-770: Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) affects Mastodon. Mastodon is a free, open-source social network server based on ActivityPub. Prior to versions 4.5.5, 4.4.12, and 4.3.18, the server does not enforce a maximum length for the names of lists or filters, or for filter keywords, allowing any user to set an arbitrarily long string as the name or keyword. Any local user can abuse the list or filter fields to cause disproportionate storage and computing resource usage. They can additionally cause their own web interface to be unusable, although they mu
