1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to ALREADY possess root privilege on the Samsung device (PR:H) and physical/local access (AV:L) - there is no remote or network path. The device must additionally be in the Before First Unlock (BFU) state (powered on but not yet unlocked by the user since boot), and a tied profile (e.g. a work or secondary profile) must exist whose data is the target. The flaw is limited by the high bar of needing root beforehand, the local-only vector, and the narrow BFU timing window; it does not enable privilege escalation, code execution, or data modification (integrity and availability impact are None).

Impact

The input provides a CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N, base 6.7 Medium) but no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no indication of public exploit code. All signals point to low real-world risk despite the HIGH confidentiality impact: the vector is local only (AV:L) and requires already-held root/high privilege (PR:H), which is a substantial precondition - an attacker who already has root on the device has significant capability regardless of this flaw. There is no scope change (SC/SI/SA all N) and no integrity or availability impact (VI:N/VA:N). Exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' This is a defense-in-depth hardening fix (preventing root from reaching tied-profile data in the Before First Unlock state) rather than a widely weaponizable vulnerability. EPSS is missing, so widespread-exploitation probability cannot be quantified; the absence of KEV and the high privilege requirement together argue this is not an urgent priority. Note the CWE is listed as N/A in the input - the described behavior is improper privilege management (CWE-269-class), which should be confirmed with the vendor advisory.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has already achieved root privilege on a Samsung device targets a device in the Before First Unlock (BFU) state - for example, a seized or recently powered-on phone that the user has not yet unlocked. Using that root access, the attacker abuses improper privilege management in the Locksettings component to read data belonging to a tied profile (such as a work or secondary profile) that should remain protected prior to first unlock. No public proof-of-concept is identified at the time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Local information disclosure in Samsung Locksettings (prior to SMR Oct-2026 Release 1) allows an attacker who already possesses root privilege on the device to read data belonging to a tied profile while the device is in the Before First Unlock (BFU) state. Exploitation is local-only (AV:L) and requires high privileges (PR:H), with no remote path; it does not enable privilege escalation, code execution, or data modification. No public exploit code exists, and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV; EPSS data was not provided at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released patch: Samsung SMR Oct-2026 Release 1 (or later security maintenance release) for the affected device models; consult the advisory at https://security.samsungmobile.com/securityUpdate.smsb?year=2026&month=10 for model-specific availability. Because exploitation requires the attacker to already have root and local access, the practical risk is narrow; however, no configuration workaround is documented. Compensating controls include restricting physical and root-level access to devices, ensuring devices are upgraded to the latest SMR as soon as it is available, and minimizing the BFU window where feasible by prompting users to unlock after reboot-though this does not remove the need for the patch. Note that disabling tied profiles would eliminate the target data but may break enterprise or work-profile functionality.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Samsung Locksettings is a system component managing device lock and multi-profile encryption states on Samsung Android devices. The flaw is an improper privilege management issue (access control class) in which a root-level local attacker can bypass intended profile isolation during the BFU window-after boot but before the user first unlocks the device-and access data of a tied profile (e.g., a work or secondary profile). The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N, base 6.7 Medium) and our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) agree that the attack requires pre-existing root and local access, with confidentiality impact only. No CWE identifier was provided, but the root cause is a failure to enforce profile-level access restrictions for privileged processes in a specific device state.
