Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated WordPress account with contributor-level capabilities or higher on a site running RT Mega Menu ≤1.5.2 with the Gutenberg RT Mega Menu block available. The attacker injects a tag-less script payload into the block's 'pointer_menu_item' attribute; because the payload contains no HTML tags it survives wp_kses_post filtering applied to post content on save and is stored intact in the block comment JSON. Execution is triggered passively when any user (admin, editor, or visitor) views the affected page - no attacker interaction at trigger time (UI:N). Limiting factors: exploitation is impossible without a contributor+ account, so sites that do not provision untrusted authoring accounts face substantially reduced real-world risk; impact is confined to browser-side script execution (C:L/I:L, A:N).

Impact

This is a moderate-severity stored XSS (vendor CVSS 6.4, CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) whose real-world priority is tempered by its authentication gate. The PR:L metric maps directly to the description's 'contributor-level access and above' requirement, so this is not an unauthenticated internet-wide bug - an attacker must already hold a low-privileged authoring account. No EPSS score, KEV listing, SSVC decision data, or public POC was supplied in the input, so exploitation-probability signals are absent rather than negative; the only exploitation intelligence is the Wordfence threat-intel disclosure, which is a research advisory, not an in-the-wild report. The technical detail is credible and specific: the payload is tag-less JSON inside a Gutenberg block comment that slips past wp_kses_post (which only filters HTML tags in post content) and reaches the nav walker unescaped at render (render.php L306/L32, rtmega-nav-walker.php L182). Net assessment: a genuine but not urgent issue - real because the bypass mechanism is documented against specific source lines, but gated behind contributor auth and limited to C:L/I:L impact (session/DOM-level script execution, not server compromise). Treat as a standard 'patch in normal cycle' XSS unless the site grants contributor accounts to untrusted users, which raises priority.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a contributor account on a WordPress site running RT Mega Menu ≤1.5.2 inserts a crafted RT Mega Menu block whose 'pointer_menu_item' attribute holds a tag-less JavaScript payload that survives wp_kses_post sanitization inside the block comment JSON. When an administrator, editor, or visitor later views the page, the walker renders the attribute unescaped and the script executes in their browser (S:C). No public exploit code is identified in the provided data, though Wordfence has documented the vulnerable code paths.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 18, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting in the WordPress plugin RT Mega Menu - Mega Menu Builder for Elementor & Gutenberg (all versions up to and including 1.5.2) allows authenticated attackers holding contributor-level or higher privileges to plant a tag-less script payload in a block's 'pointer_menu_item' attribute, which then executes in the browser of any administrator, editor, or visitor who opens the injected page. Because the payload contains no HTML tags it slips past the wp_kses_post filtering applied on save and survives intact inside the block comment's JSON attributes, so the plugin's navigation walker renders it unescaped. Vendor CVSS 6.4 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N); no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV); the contributor-level authentication gate limits real-world exposure to sites that grant untrusted users authoring accounts.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis - the available references point only to the vulnerable 1.5.2 source and the Wordfence advisory, so monitor https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/024d5962-0e8f-43cb-90dc-c282a5e436f2?source=cve and the plugin's WordPress.org/Trac pages for a release above 1.5.2 and update as soon as it appears. Until then the most direct mitigation is to deactivate or remove RT Mega Menu, accepting that any mega menus rendered by the plugin will disappear until it is reinstalled. Where the plugin must remain active, restrict contributor-and-above roles to fully trusted accounts and audit existing posts, pages, and revisions for injected 'pointer_menu_item' block-attribute values, clearing them in the block editor so already-stored payloads stop executing for viewers. A Content-Security-Policy that disallows inline script execution adds browser-side defense against this injection class but risks breaking other legitimate site scripts and must be tested before rollout; a WAF rule matching suspicious block-comment JSON attributes in submissions can block new injections but risks false positives against legitimate menu configuration. Sites that cannot restrict authoring accounts should treat the plugin as untrusted until a fixed version ships.

Technical ContextAI · show details

WordPress stores block attributes as JSON inside HTML comment delimiters within post content, and this plugin passes the 'pointer_menu_item' value from that block metadata into its navigation walker and block renderer (rtmega-nav-walker.php line 182 and render.php lines 32 and 306 in the 1.5.2 tag) without output escaping. wp_kses_post, applied to post content on save, only strips disallowed HTML elements and attributes; because the attribute payload can be crafted with no HTML tags at all, it is not neutralized by that filter and is stored intact in the block comment. The root cause is CWE-79, improper neutralization of input during web page generation, i.e. missing esc_attr()/esc_html()/wp_kses() on output. The CVSS vector's scope change (S:C) reflects that the injected script runs in the origin of the affected WordPress site and can act on behalf of viewing users beyond the vulnerable component, while confidentiality and integrity impact remain Low (C:L/I:L, A:N) and no attacker interaction is needed at trigger time (UI:N); the PR:L metric confirms an authenticated account at contributor level or above is required.

DescriptionCVE.org

The RT Mega Menu - Mega Menu Builder for Elementor & Gutenberg plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'pointer_menu_item' Block Attribute in all versions up to, and including, 1.5.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The payload bypasses wp_kses_post filtering applied to post content on save because it contains no HTML tags and survives intact inside the block comment's JSON attributes, reaching the walker unescaped at render time.
