The Survey plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via admin settings in all versions up to, and including, 1.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with administrator-level permissions and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This only affects multi-site installations and installations where unfiltered_html has been disabled.
AnalysisAI
The Survey plugin for WordPress contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in administrative settings due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping, affecting all versions up to and including 1.1. Authenticated attackers with administrator-level permissions can inject arbitrary JavaScript code that executes when users access affected pages, though this is restricted to multi-site installations or those with unfiltered_html disabled. With a CVSS score of 4.4 and high attack complexity requiring administrator privileges, the real-world risk is moderate; no public exploit code or KEV status has been indicated, making this a lower-priority remediation compared to critical vulnerabilities.
Technical ContextAI
The vulnerability is rooted in CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation), a classic output encoding failure in web applications. The Survey plugin (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:seosbg:survey:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) fails to properly escape user-supplied input in admin settings before rendering it in HTML context. Code analysis via the WordPress plugin repository shows the vulnerability exists in both inc/form.php (line 73) and inc/shortcode.php (line 35), where form data and shortcode parameters are processed without adequate sanitization using WordPress security functions such as sanitize_text_field() or esc_attr(). The vulnerability is contextual to WordPress's permission model and multisite architecture, where the unfiltered_html capability—typically reserved for administrators—determines whether raw HTML/JavaScript can bypass WordPress's built-in content filters.
RemediationAI
Users should upgrade the Survey plugin to a patched version beyond 1.1 as soon as one becomes available from the plugin developer. In the interim, administrators should verify that unfiltered_html capability is disabled (the default secure configuration) and restrict administrator account access to trusted users only, disabling unnecessary administrator accounts. For WordPress multi-site installations where this vulnerability has heightened impact, consider temporarily deactivating the Survey plugin until a patch is released. The WordPress plugin repository and Wordfence (https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/4d9b6efa-b82e-4fe5-bf56-4ca49e9ebe71) should be monitored for patch availability announcements.
