Exploitation Conditions

Requires network reachability to OwnTone's MPD protocol listener on TCP port 6600 (the MPD emulation feature must be active). The attacker sends a 'sticker find song' command whose URI/virtual_path argument is interpolated unescaped into a SQLite LIKE filter - the vendor fix confirms this by switching the %s specifier to %q for virtual_path in db_mprintf. No authentication is required (PR:N) and no user interaction (UI:N). The practical limiting factor is exposure: OwnTone is typically deployed on a home/LAN and the MPD port is commonly bound to trusted networks rather than the public internet, so unauthenticated internet-wide exploitation depends on the listener being reachable (e.g. via port forwarding or misconfiguration). Impact is also inherently limited to reading media paths and metadata, not modifying data.

Impact

The signals point to a moderate, info-disclosure-grade issue rather than a top-priority emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) is attacker-favorable - remote, unauthenticated, low complexity, no user interaction - but the impact is deliberately narrow: VC:L with VI:N/VA:N, i.e. read-only disclosure of media file paths and metadata, no write or denial-of-service capability. That is why the base score lands at 6.9 (Medium) despite the clean exploitability metrics. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month', not act_now or emergency, consistent with that bounded impact. No CISA KEV listing is present (not actively exploited per available data) and no EPSS score was supplied, so a precise exploitation-probability estimate is not possible from this input - state that gap explicitly rather than assume low probability. No working public exploit is referenced; the only code artifact is the vendor's own fix commit, which does confirm the mechanism. The dominant real-world limiter is reachability: this is a home/self-hosted media server and the MPD listener on TCP 6600 is typically LAN-bound, so internet-wide unauthenticated exploitation is unlikely absent misconfiguration or deliberate port exposure. Net: a genuine, vendor-confirmed SQLi worth patching in a normal monthly cycle, but not a drop-everything event given low impact, no KEV, no confirmed exploit, and constrained network exposure.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with network reachability to the OwnTone host connects to the MPD protocol listener on TCP 6600 and issues a crafted 'sticker find song' command whose URI argument carries SQL metacharacters, which are concatenated unescaped into a SQLite LIKE filter. This bypasses the intended path restriction and lets the attacker enumerate every media file's filesystem path and metadata. No working public exploit is referenced, though the vendor patch publicly discloses the exact vulnerable query.

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 02, 2026

SQL injection in OwnTone Server through 29.3 lets remote attackers read arbitrary media library data through the MPD emulation listener on TCP port 6600. The mpd_sticker_find() handler interpolates the attacker-supplied URI argument directly into a SQLite LIKE filter, so a crafted 'sticker find song' command escapes the intended virtual-path restriction and enumerates every media file along with its filesystem path and metadata. No authentication or user interaction is required, but exploitation depends on the MPD listener being reachable - typically it is bound to a trusted home or LAN network rather than the public internet - and the impact is confined to information disclosure (integrity and availability are unaffected). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV; the vendor has published an upstream fix commit.

RemediationAI

Patch available per vendor advisory: apply upstream commit 3164f12d18cd91c4973cc28f62298929cadac7da (https://github.com/owntone/owntone-server/commit/3164f12d18cd91c4973cc28f62298929cadac7da), which replaces the unescaped %s specifier for virtual_path with db_mprintf's %q quoting in mpd_sticker_find(); the exact first tagged release containing this commit is not confirmed in the available data, so verify against the project's release history or build from the fixed source. If immediate upgrading is not possible, the exposure is controlled by reachability rather than by the SQL itself: keep TCP port 6600 off the public internet, restrict it to trusted LAN clients with firewall rules or bind the MPD listener to a loopback/internal interface, and disable the MPD emulation feature entirely if it is not in use - the trade-off being that MPD-compatible clients and any port forwarding that exposes the service will stop working. Because the flaw is unauthenticated, any mitigation that relies on MPD passwords or client credentials does not address the root cause. Review logs for unusual 'sticker find song' commands and treat previously exposed media paths and metadata as disclosed.

Technical ContextAI · show details

OwnTone (formerly forked-daapd) is a media server that speaks DAAP/DACP, RSP, AirPlay and an MPD-compatible protocol on port 6600. The MPD command handler mpd_sticker_find() in src/mpd.c builds a SQLite query filter for 'sticker find song' using db_mprintf(), passing the caller's URI/virtual_path value through a %s format specifier. Because %s performs no quoting or escaping, a value containing single quotes terminates the literal '... LIKE '<path>%'' clause and lets the attacker append arbitrary SQL predicates to the WHERE filter. The vendor commit 3164f12d18cd91c4973cc28f62298929cadac7da changes that specifier to %q, db_mprintf's SQL-quoting conversion, which is the direct root-cause fix. This is CWE-89 (SQL injection): user-controlled data crosses into a query string without neutralisation. The affected component is only the MPD emulation layer, so exposure exists where that listener is enabled and reachable; DAAP/RSP-only deployments are outside the described attack path. The database backend is SQLite holding the media library index, which is why the exposed data is file paths and tags rather than credentials.

DescriptionCVE.org

OwnTone Server through 29.3 contains an sql injection vulnerability in mpd_sticker_find() in src/mpd.c that allows unauthenticated remote attackers to inject SQL via the URI argument. Attackers can send a crafted 'sticker find song' command to the MPD listener on TCP port 6600 to bypass path restrictions and enumerate all media files with filesystem paths and metadata.
