Exploitation Conditions

Exploitable only when an application wires the Apache MINA 3.0 codec module's JavaNativeMessageDecoder into a filter chain facing an untrusted peer; that decoder calls ObjectInputStream.readObject() on frame bytes with no class filter. Achieving RCE additionally requires a usable deserialization gadget chain on the application's classpath. Scope is limited to Apache MINA 3.0.0 through 3.0.0-M2 - a milestone of the inactive, unsupported 3.0 branch - so it does not affect default deployments that omit this decoder and is not present in the recommended 2.2.X branch. The flaw is not fixed; the only complete remediation per the vendor is migrating to the latest 2.2.X release.

Impact

The input CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 9.8) describes textbook network, unauthenticated, no-interaction deserialization RCE with full confidentiality, integrity and availability impact - the maximum-severity profile. However, the real-world priority signals are weak and incomplete: the vuln.today Decision label is 'awaiting_data', there is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The CVSS vector describes severity, not likelihood of deployment: exploitation is gated by an application-specific choice to place JavaNativeMessageDecoder in front of an untrusted peer, a condition the vector does not capture and which conflicts with the 'trivial AC:L/PR:N' reading. The affected code is also an 'UNSUPPORTED WHEN ASSIGNED' milestone (3.0.0 through 3.0.0-M2) of an inactive branch the ASF will not fix, which narrows exposure to the small set of deployments running that pre-release and using the Java-native codec. Net: high theoretical severity, but current evidence (no KEV, no EPSS, no confirmed PoC, awaiting_data) does not establish widespread or active exploitation - treat as a serious code-execution flaw to remediate by migration, not a confirmed mass-exploitation emergency, and reassess if exploitation signals appear.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An application built on Apache MINA 3.0.0-M2 exposes a network service whose filter chain uses the codec module's JavaNativeMessageDecoder to parse incoming frames from untrusted clients. A remote attacker connects and sends a crafted message frame containing a malicious serialized Java object; the decoder calls ObjectInputStream.readObject() with no class filter, and if a suitable gadget chain is present on the classpath this yields arbitrary code execution. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, though the deserialization pattern is well understood.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 31, 2026

Unauthenticated remote code execution is possible in Apache MINA 3.0.0 through 3.0.0-M2 when an application places the 3.0 codec module's JavaNativeMessageDecoder in a filter chain facing an untrusted peer: the decoder deserializes frame bytes with ObjectInputStream.readObject() and applies no class filter, so crafted input can drive a gadget chain already present on the application's classpath. Deployments that do not wire this decoder are unaffected, and the recommended 2.2.X branch does not contain the class. The 3.0 branch is inactive and explicitly unsupported, the vendor does not plan to release a fix, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch is identified at time of analysis and none is planned: Apache states the 3.0.0 branch is inactive and it will not ship a fix, so the complete remediation per the vendor is migration off the affected line to the latest Apache MINA 2.2.X release (the project download page currently lists Mina 2.2.10 as the newest 2.2.X build), which does not include JavaNativeMessageDecoder. If migration cannot be performed promptly, remove JavaNativeMessageDecoder from any filter chain that can receive bytes from an untrusted peer, or place the service behind a boundary that guarantees only trusted peers can reach that decoder; the trade-off is loss of the native Java object transport for that path, and this only eliminates exposure through this decoder rather than fixing the class, so any other code path that deserializes peer-influenced bytes remains at risk. Note the 3.0 milestone is unsupported, meaning no further security maintenance should be expected for it; see https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2026/q4/457 and https://mina.apache.org/ for the vendor statement and current 2.2.X downloads.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The issue is CWE-502 (deserialization of untrusted data) in the MINA 3.0 codec module. Apache MINA is an event-driven asynchronous network application framework built on Java NIO, providing an abstract API over TCP/IP and UDP/IP transports; applications compose its filter chains to encode and decode frames. JavaNativeMessageDecoder in the 3.0 line treats frame bytes as Java native serialization streams and passes them directly to ObjectInputStream.readObject() without installing an ObjectInputFilter or otherwise restricting which classes may be instantiated. Because Java deserialization instantiates arbitrary classes reachable on the classpath and invokes their readObject/readResolve logic, an attacker who can send frames to such a decoder can supply a serialized payload that triggers a gadget chain and, where a usable chain exists, achieve code execution in the application's context. The assessed vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 9.8) reflects network reachability with no privileges or user interaction, and full confidentiality, integrity and availability impact; the trigger path itself is confirmed by the vendor notice. Exploitation is conditional on the decoder actually being deployed in front of an untrusted peer and on a usable gadget chain being present - neither condition is inherent to the library, which is why default deployments and the 2.2.X branch are outside the affected scope.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-118636 is a critical unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability in Apache MINA 3.0.0 through 3.0.0-M2, affecting only deployments that use the JavaNativeMessageDecoder in a filter chain exposed to untrusted peers. The 3.0 branch is inactive and unsupported, and the vendor will not release a fix; any organization running this decoder in production faces severe compromise risk. Leadership should prioritize identifying and migrating affected systems immediately.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: remove JavaNativeMessageDecoder from any filter chain facing untrusted peers; migrate to the supported 2.2.X branch; restrict network access to affected services; deploy a Java agent or equivalent to apply class filtering and block deserialization of untrusted data.
