MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated WordPress account with contributor-level capability or above on the target site, sufficient to create or edit an Elementor form widget and set the per-field custom_id value (the '_elementor_data.form_fields[].custom_id' parameter). The payload only fires when a user - including unauthenticated visitors - subsequently loads a page that renders the affected form, because execution occurs client-side when the plugin's logic-frontend.js runs jQuery .html() on the server-emitted <template>, at which point HTML fragment serialization restores the escaped " to a raw double-quote and the custom_id escapes its attribute context. Limiting factors: the contributor authentication barrier (not exploitable by anonymous users), dependence on the conditional-fields/logic code path that processes custom_id into the frontend template, and the need for a victim to actually visit the injected page; affected only up to and including version 2.7.9. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-priority, not emergency-tier, issue. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) reflects a network-reachable but privilege-gated flaw: PR:L confirms an authenticated account (contributor-level or above per the description) is required, which materially limits the attacker population to users who can already create or edit Elementor forms. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now or emergency), consistent with a stored XSS that needs a foothold rather than a wormable unauthenticated bug. No CISA KEV listing is present, so there is no confirmed active exploitation; no EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified here; and no public PoC or exploit reference appears among the sources (only vendor advisory and source-code links), so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are internally consistent - a medium-severity, authenticated, contributor-gated stored XSS with a vendor fix available - and point to real but bounded risk rather than a high-urgency drop-everything event. The main residual uncertainty is the missing EPSS value and the trust model of the site: on multi-author WordPress installs where contributor accounts are freely granted, the effective privilege barrier is low and the S:C/scope-change into site visitors' browsers raises the practical impact. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds a WordPress contributor account (or higher) on the target site edits an Elementor form and plants a crafted value in a form field's custom_id. When any visitor later loads the page containing that form, the plugin's logic-frontend.js extracts the template via jQuery .html(), the serialization restores the escaped quote to a raw double-quote, the custom_id breaks out of its HTML attribute context, and the attacker's script executes in the victim's browser. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires the authenticated contributor foothold plus a victim visiting the affected page. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026
Stored DOM-based cross-site scripting in the Cool FormKit Lite form builder for Elementor (WordPress plugin, slug extensions-for-elementor-form) through version 2.7.9 lets an authenticated attacker with contributor-level access or above plant arbitrary script in a page by setting the '_elementor_data.form_fields[].custom_id' value on an Elementor form widget. The payload fires client-side for any visitor - including anonymous ones - who later loads a page rendering that form, because the plugin's frontend script re-serializes the server-emitted escaped JSON into HTML and the custom_id escapes its attribute context. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV; the contributor authentication barrier keeps it moderate-priority rather than emergency-tier.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 2.7.10 - update the plugin to that version (readme stable tag 2.7.10, CFL_VERSION 2.7.10) via the WordPress plugin updater or by downloading from https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/3772891/extensions-for-elementor-form/trunk/assets/js/shared/logic-frontend.js, which accompanies upstream PR https://github.com/CoolPluginsTeam/extensions-for-elementor-form/pull/90. The fixed build strips every character except letters, digits, underscore and hyphen from custom_id, hex-encodes the JSON template payload and rebuilds the injected radio/checkbox nodes with document.createElement instead of jQuery .html(), so no partial workaround reproduces that coverage. Where the update cannot be applied immediately, the practical compensating control is to reduce the contributor-level population that can edit Elementor templates on the site and audit existing _elementor_data form_fields custom_id values for attribute-breaking characters, accepting that this only removes the injection precondition and leaves existing stored payloads live until the plugin is patched; disabling the plugin's conditional-logic frontend script would break form logic behaviour for legitimate visitors.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Elementor persists widget configuration as JSON in post meta (_elementor_data), and this plugin's form fields carry a per-field custom_id that is folded into a conditional-logic object in includes/fields/conditional-fields-trait.php. That object is wp_json_encode'd and printed inside a <template> tag after esc_html(), and assets/js/shared/logic-frontend.js then reads it back with jQuery .html() to synthesize extra radio/checkbox options at runtime. The esc_html() entity " is restored to a literal double-quote by the HTML fragment-serialization algorithm during that extraction, so an attacker-controlled custom_id can close out of an HTML attribute context in the plugin's own generated markup and inject script - the classic CWE-79 chain of insufficient input sanitization plus missing output escaping, made DOM-based by the client-side re-parse. The upstream fix (PR #90, changeset 3772891) sanitizes custom_id to /[^a-zA-Z0-9_\-]/ at server emission, encodes the JSON with JSON_HEX_TAG|JSON_HEX_AMP|JSON_HEX_APOS|JSON_HEX_QUOT and _wp_specialchars(ENT_QUOTES), and replaces the string-templated jQuery option markup with document.createElement/setAttribute DOM construction so no re-parse can occur.

Contributor authentication gives PR:L; no attacker user interaction needed to store it (UI:N); low-complexity injection (AC:L); S:C and C:L/I:L because script runs in other users' browser context with no availability impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
The Cool FormKit Lite - Advanced Form Builder for Elementor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the '_elementor_data.form_fields[].custom_id' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.7.9 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The esc_html() call applied at server emission is bypassed because the HTML fragment-serialization algorithm restores " to a raw double-quote inside text nodes when jQuery .html() extracts the template, allowing the attacker-controlled custom_id to break out of an HTML attribute context within the plugin's own frontend script.
