The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires ALL of the following: (1) the Highcharts chart must be rendered in non-styled mode - styled-mode charts do not apply the breadcrumbs.style option and are not affected; (2) untrusted/attacker-controlled data must reach the chart configuration, specifically an event-handler-named key (e.g., onmouseover) under breadcrumbs.style, reachable via drilldown.breadcrumbs, navigation.breadcrumbs, or the breadcrumbs option of the treemap, sunburst or treegraph series; (3) a victim user must drill down or traverse into a hierarchical-series level so the breadcrumb button actually renders; and (4) the victim must then hover over or activate that breadcrumb button to fire the handler. Affected versions are >=10.0.0 and < 11.4.9, >=12.0.0 and < 12.6.1, and >=13.0.0 through 13.0.2; this applies across Highcharts Core, Stock, Maps and Gantt since they ship from the same package. The requirement for config control plus specific victim interaction (UI:A) are the primary limiting factors on real-world exploitation.

Impact

This is a genuine, actionable client-side XSS (CWE-79) in a very widely deployed charting library, but its risk is gated by several real preconditions rather than being a drive-by remote flaw. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:A, VC:H/VI:H) scores 8.4 and already encodes the two key limiters: PR:L means the attacker must be able to get untrusted data into the chart configuration (so some privilege or a data-injection path is required - not fully anonymous), and UI:A means a victim must actively navigate a drilldown/hierarchical level and then hover over or activate the breadcrumb button for the planted handler to fire. No EPSS score was provided and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation; the vuln.today 'this_week' decision label marks it as a prioritized-but-not-emergency fix. A proof-of-concept does exist in the form of the vendor's own unit test (the fix commit demonstrates style: { onmouseover: 'window.breadcrumbsPwned = true' }), confirming the mechanism is real and trivially reproducible once untrusted data reaches the config. Net: treat as a real priority for any deployment that renders attacker-influenced data in Highcharts drilldown/hierarchical charts in non-styled mode, but it is not a mass-exploitable unauthenticated RCE-class issue - the requirement for config control plus victim interaction keeps it below emergency tier.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker submits untrusted data (e.g., a chart label, series name, or dataset field) into an application that feeds it into a Highcharts drilldown or hierarchical-series breadcrumbs configuration, including an event-handler key such as onmouseover under breadcrumbs.style. When a victim user drills down (or traverses into a treemap/sunburst/treegraph level) so the breadcrumb button renders and then hovers over or clicks it, the attacker's JavaScript executes in the origin of the hosting page. A working proof-of-concept exists as the vendor's unit test demonstrating the onmouseover payload; because UI:A applies, exploitation still depends on the victim interacting with the breadcrumb.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

Cross-site scripting in Highcharts JS affects the 10.x branch before 11.4.9, 12.x before 12.6.1, and 13.x through 13.0.2, where an attacker who controls chart configuration can place event-handler keys such as onmouseover under breadcrumbs.style; Highcharts applies those keys as SVG attributes on the breadcrumb button, so the attacker's script runs in the origin of the page hosting the chart. Only charts rendered in non-styled mode apply the option, and the handler fires only after a victim drills down or traverses into a hierarchical-series level so the breadcrumbs render and then hovers over or activates the button. Vendor fixes are released in 11.4.9, 12.6.1 and 13.1.0; there is no CISA KEV entry and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N against a vendor CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.4.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to a fixed release: 11.4.9 on the 11.x branch, 12.6.1 on the 12.x branch, or 13.1.0 or later on the 13.x branch; the advisory's npm and CDN examples use npm install highcharts@13.1.1 and https://code.highcharts.com/13.1.1/highcharts.js. If upgrading is not immediately possible, the vendor publishes a workaround that must load immediately after Highcharts and before any chart is created, wrapping Highcharts.SVGElement.prototype._defaultSetter so that any attribute key matching /^on/i is dropped; the trade-off is that this is a global prototype patch which will also suppress legitimate custom on* SVG attributes on every chart in the page, and the vendor verified it against published bundles on 10.0.0, 11.4.8, 12.3.0 and 13.0.2. Because exploitation requires untrusted data to reach the chart configuration, validating or sanitizing option objects that include breadcrumbs settings before rendering limits exposure, and charts rendered in styled mode do not apply the option and are not affected. Full details are in GHSA-35rr-xwfh-x789 and commit b0fafdaaee7d0cac2ecfeb0eaf37b11cd40594ef; the current priority label places remediation on a this-week cadence.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Highcharts renders charts as SVG, and its SVGElement layer separates CSS properties from presentation attributes; the breadcrumbs style option is documented as CSS but was routed through the attribute setter with attribute names passed through unfiltered. Because browsers treat any attribute whose name starts with "on" as an event handler when set on an SVG element, a key such as onmouseover supplied in the chart configuration becomes a live handler on the breadcrumb button, producing a DOM-based cross-site scripting condition (CWE-79) rather than a server-side injection. The option is reachable through drilldown.breadcrumbs, navigation.breadcrumbs, and the breadcrumbs option of the treemap, sunburst and treegraph series, which places the flaw in Core and therefore also in Highcharts Stock, Maps and Gantt, since all four ship from the same package (CPE cpe:2.3:a:highcharts:highcharts). Charts rendered in styled mode apply styling through CSS classes instead of this option and are not affected. The assessed vector's UI:R/UI:A component matches the documented precondition that a victim must drill down or traverse into a hierarchical level and then hover over or activate the breadcrumb button, and its PR:L component reflects that the attacker needs a degree of control over the chart configuration input rather than mere network reachability. The upstream fix routes the option through the CSS setter and rejects on*-prefixed attribute names, and the fix commit adds regression unit tests covering the breadcrumbs XSS case.

DescriptionCVE.org

Highcharts JS is a JavaScript charting library based on SVG. From 10.0.0 until 11.4.9, 12.6.1, and 13.1.0, Highcharts applies breadcrumbs.style as SVG attributes rather than CSS and does not filter the attribute names. An attacker who controls chart configuration can provide event-handler keys through drilldown.breadcrumbs, navigation.breadcrumbs, or hierarchical series breadcrumb options. The keys become active handlers on the breadcrumb button and execute in the hosting page origin after the user navigates to a level and hovers over or activates the button. Styled-mode charts do not apply this option and are not affected. This issue is fixed in 11.4.9, 12.6.1 and 13.1.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Highcharts JS, a widely used charting library, contains a cross-site scripting vulnerability that affects versions 10.x before 11.4.9, 12.x before 12.6.1, and 13.x through 13.0.2. If exploited, an attacker could execute scripts in the context of the victim's browser, potentially compromising data integrity and confidentiality for users of applications that render charts and allow user-controlled chart configurations. Leadership should prioritize patching because this vulnerability could lead to session hijacking or data theft, especially in customer-facing or internal analytics platforms.
